Austin's involvement will make it worse. He will totally eliminate any drama, because we know that Lawler will come out on top in the end, and there will be no odds for Lawler to overcome.
Of course Lawler will come out on top in the end; would they REALLY let one of their HOFers lose at his first WM?
But Austin is there pretty much just to stun Swagger or any one else who tries to get involved in the match, allow Lawler to beat the piss outta Cole (which he of course will, one on one) like everyone wants him to, stun Cole at some point after the match, and have beer with the King in the ring after the match.
If JBL was the ref we'd just get one of those stupid, cheating ref matches where the face somehow manages to overcome the odds. People don't wanna see King defeat Cole at Mania; they wanna see him beat the hell outta Cole...

But those matches have drama. We know that King can beat the crap out of Cole. But with both JBL and Swagger trying to screw him over, at least it will be an uphill battle.

why does it have to be an uphill battle for King? bc he's the face? Cole has screwed King over several times and CONSTANTLY talks crap to him. With JBL as ref, King won't get his hands on Cole the way the fans want him to. The match'll be their only altercation; might as well give the fans what they want.

You are assuming that Lawler will wrestle the match as if it were any normal match. That, like a babyface, who would go do business, then go to the back. In this case, that won't happen. For Lawler, this match is all about getting his hands on Cole, so of course he will prolong the match himself. With JBL as ref, it won't be just a boring massacre. It will have some actual excitement. And maybe they will be able to get back some of the heat that Austin pretty much wasted this week on Raw.

It won't be a boring massacre; it'll be a boring, one sided, "vintage" WWE style special attraction match where the babyface has to overcome insurmountable odds in order to win. If JBL is ref, King won't even get a chance to give Cole enough of a beating to warrant a WM match. I don't wanna see King getting beat on by JBL, Swagger, and Cole until someone else gets involved and allows Lawler to hit a Piledriver; I'd rather see Cole cower and plead for a few minutes, Swagger insert himself, Swagger get a Stunner for his interference, then Lawler beat the holy hell outta Cole. Both scenarios are pretty predictable, but I'm tired of WWE pushing all the odds against the face just so they can overcome them. It's stale, unless you do it in a cool way. This has been done a trillion times before....

And therein lies the drama. Can king get his revenge with the odds stacked so highly against him?

Neither do I. I want to see Lawler either out-fight or outsmart the heels.

Everything has been done a million times before. This is just like Homicide vs. Dragon at FB 06, and Rock vs. Big Show (w/Shane as SGR in the build-up to WM2000, or Hogan & Savage vs. the Alliance to End Hulkamania, or any number of other matches. The reason the angle has been done so many times is because it works.
And the heel referee in particular has been done to such perfection in CHIKARA recently (and Vickie has obviously been watching, because she was using some of Zabato's schtick), that I have no doubt that it will add to this match.
