My problem with Drew McIntyre's new gimmick

Post by kiel297 » Mar 2nd, '12, 04:00

"Look at that homo in the ring!"

"He''s flirting with dudes? That guy's a faggot!"

"This is why I don't hang around with gay people"

These are all things I can guarantee will be said the moment Drew McIntyre's new gimmick makes it to TV. Another thing I expect to hear when I tell people that I am gay:

"Like that *censored* off the wrestling?"

Now, I'm not one who gets offended by things very easily, but god damn I will flip shit if I hear that said to me.

My point here is that Drew McIntyre is not going to get heat for flirting with people and being vain. He's going to get heat from the fans for being gay and flaunting it. It's long to be Goldust all over again. It's not 1997 anymore, times have changed, but the WWE fans aren't going to know that. The rednecks are going to have an excuse to finally shout faggot at someone again, and what kind of message is being sent out to the millions of children that are watching the product? To a ten year old, what they are seeing is everyone hating someone because he's flirting with a man of the same sex. Oh I get it! Being gay must be a bad thing! And suddenly we have another generation of gay people having to fight just be seen as equal to everyone else, and mor having to put up with the misconception that being gay means you wanna get with every guy in the room.

This doesn't just stop with WWE enforcing the gay stereotype. It happened to Muhammad Hassan too. WWE brought in a Muslim character, made him a terrorist and did absolutely nothing to help the Muslims struggling to be seen as equal in the United States.

If time has proven one thing, it's that slapping a stereotype on a heel does nothing. It reinforce the idea that being in that group or community is wrong. Society should be fighting to end the use of negative stereotypes as a whole, not make the world point and boo at them. Negative stereotypes shoe play no part whatsoever in professional wrestling.

I don't have a problem with you voicing your opinion, but it's a little bs to complain about stereotypes and give in to them at the same time. Presuming that "rednecks" are looking for an excuse to be homophobic is just as bigoted as someone being homophobic. Language like that is what ruins arguments on topics like this.

Regardless of whether or not WWE pushes the gimmick, nothing justifies bigotry. Nobody's gonna START to think it's okay to bash gays just bc of a gimmick on wrestling, bro. And if you take Goldust into consideration; the guy flurished during a time when ppl gave no damns about being PC. I don't think McIntyre having this gimmick will be such a big deal; hell Chuck & Billy got over BY being SUPER ambiguously gay.

I'm sure a lot of immature, ignorant ass ppl are gonna say the things you listed, but those ppl are saying all those things already; they say them about whoever they want to regardless of whether or not that person IS gay or if their promotion is giving them a gimmick that suggests so. You should just ignore those ppl, or point out how fucking ignorant their prejudice is this day and age; but don't let their hate turn YOU. Just bc they go stereotyping gays, doesn't justify you stereotyping THEM. THAT'S the shit about prejudice and ignorance; they breed more of the same.

Has this gimmick even debuted yet?

Plus, it's not pro wrestling's job to think for society. It's like the new porn law in Los Angeles where you have to wear condoms in porn, it's not porn's job to think for the general public!

Okay, perhaps I shouldn't have said rednecks, when I meant to simply refer to those ignorant people.

I am have also not explained my point very clearly. I'm not saying that jus because it was on WWE, grown men are suddenly gonna turn into homophobes. I'm saying that they're pretty much encouraging those already ignorant people to continue being ignorant, which is what annoys me.

Ycw, they debuted it at a house show. It's more or less his gimmick from when he was working here in the uk, but he wasnt flirting with dudes.

My hope is that the dirt sheets (and admittedly myself) are blowing it out of proportion and that I've gotten the wrong end of the stick.

cool; cuz I understand your point and it's a VERY good one; I just don't want ppl to look at it and see that part jumping out at them (bc the point you are making IS an important one).
