Sean Waltman Blogs on CM Punk and Zack Ryder

Post by kiel297 » Jun 30th, '11, 06:26

I hope you are all having a great week so far. I want to thank everyone for the overwhelmingly positive feedback regarding my video post regarding my thoughts on this weeks Raw. I’m really grateful for your support. Any thoughts or suggestions you have to make the site better, please email them to me at: sean@realxpac.com . Now some of my thoughts and updates on future appearances & projects.

I always thought CM Punk was something special, but I’ll be the 1st to admit I didn’t realize just how special he has the potential to be. Like I said in my video, Punk has been running on all cylinders as of late. I’ll need a whole article devoted to him, just to tell you all the reasons I think he is currently the hottest commodity in WWE & the industry in general. If the people in charge give him the ball & let him loose on the mic, I truly believe he could be the next big thin in wrestling. His promos are in a league of their own right now & his work in the ring is as good as anyone in that company. I loved the tribute to Randy Savage with the pink trunks & yellow boots & knee pads.

His promos come off so natural & he’s not desperately trying to come up with something clever or a cool catch phrase to say. I could go on & on right now, but I’ll save the rest of my thoughts for a later date. Many years ago, I was at the Mall of America in MN with my ex wife & kids, when a young man with his girlfriend (I assume) approached me. He was very apologetic & didnt want to take away from my time with my family. He just wanted to introduce himself & tell me he was a young wrestler trying to make it in the business. I don’t remember the exact words of our conversation, as it was over 10 years ago, but I don’t forget a face. That guy was CM Punk.

While I was still living in Mexico I stopped by Palacio de los Deportes where WWE was putting on a live event. The main event was Punk(as WWE Champ) vs Undertaker. I know from experience how hard it is for a guy our size to work with Taker or Kane. Well Punk and Taker had a hell of a match & I was extremely impressed that he had the ability to pull that off. I talked to William Regal about him that night & he told me Punk actually paid for & took a seminar put on by Regal, even after Punk had already made somewhat of a name for himself. That alone speaks volumes about the guy. Someone already being critically acclaimed by hardcore fans, checked his ego at the door & was willing to do whatever it took to become the best he could be. I could go on & on about Punk, but I want to talk about other things while I’m at it. My hat’s off to you CM Punk.

Another guy I want to share my thoughts on is Zack Ryder. I think it’s fair of me to say that Ryder isn’t the most athletically gifted guy on the roster. His physique is average, but his work is solid. The thing about Ryder, that stands out to me, is his ambition & the fact that he has taken the initiative to get his character over(with no help from creative, as far as I know) through his youtube series “Z-True Long Island Story”. I haven’t watched every episode, but I took the time to watch several of them. After watching some of his episodes, I came away feeling like I know the guy. He comes off as a guy who is a super mark for wrestling & will do whatever it takes to make it. He seems like he is a big fan of himself & yet still a mark for the bigger names in WWE, such as the segments with Cena making brief cameos & Zack marking out over it. I think there is a great opportunity for WWE to capitalize on this.

My only fear is that creative didn’t have anything to do with creating this character & may not “get it”. I really hope this doesn’t prevent them from giving this guy a real shot at getting over with the “mainstream” fan. I’ve seen countless situations where Vince, the creative team, or whoever just doesn’t “get it” & someone with tons of potential gets overlooked or even released. Take Colt Cabana for example. For the life of me I don’t understand why they let him get away. People working within the wrestling industry tend to live inside the “wrestling bubble”. Thus, much of the time, they do not have their finger on the pulse of the will of the people. The Zack Ryder character is obviously resonating with the people. Just because WWE creative may not “get it”, I hope they don’t let that get in the way of giving this guy a chance. One thing is for sure. The rest of the roster of new guys coming up, should pay attention to what Ryder is doing on his own to get over. Get off your asses guys. If you had half the desire and ambition to take the ball & try to run with it, instead of waiting for someone to hand it to you. No matter what may come of Zack Ryder, the rest of the talent could learn a lot about how to get over in spite of not being given a push.

My respect for Waltman has grown exponentially since King of Trios. I'm really surprised he's keeping to his word that he's turning his life around.

nice read. I think Sean sympathies with Punk. Sean knows exactly what Punk was talking about on monday, he knows that no matter how good you are, it's not easy for a "small" guy to make it.
