WWE Files Trademark For Old WCW PPV Event

Last year, WWE revived two special events from the defunct World Championship Wrestling promotion. WarGames, the double-cage match first used in the NWA, was used at November’s NXT Takeover event from Houston, TX. Later that month, WWE ran a special live event from North Carolina’s Greensboro Coliseum dubbed Starrcade.

A search of the United States Patent and Trademark Office reveals that WWE applied for the trademark The Great American Bash on April 27th.

Among the uses for the trademark filing are, “Entertainment services, namely, a show about professional wrestling; entertainment services, namely, the production and exhibition of professional wrestling events rendered live and through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service.”

The Great American Bash was first used in the late 1980’s as the name of Jim Crockett Promotions summer tours. The name was later used by WCW as one of their signature pay-per-view events. Following the demise of WCW, WWE used the Great American Bash for several years starting in 2004. The event was later rebranded as “The Bash” but has not been used by WWE in many years.

This latest trademark application indicates WWE intends to bring back the Great American Bash once again – perhaps later this year when the company returns to Saudi Arabia.

I'm of the opinion that this name should only be used when the show actually falls on October 31st.

Agreed. Hell I'd take Fall Brawl over Hell in a Cell.

Kids don't even Trick-Or-Treat on the 31st anymore! They do it on the nearest Sunday or some such BS like that.

I'm just happy they brought back Clash of (the) Champions. With the dual brands though, it's frustrating that they don't do champions vs champions on it. I think that would be such a cool show. Much better than Team Raw vs Team Smackdown...

It seems like a no-brainer, but they've had the opportunity in the past and never acted on it. The only time they ever do brand supremacy is in those stupid 10 man tag team eliminations. I think their mentality is that a show with nothing on the line but "who's the better man" won't draw, or a champion losing even to a lateral champion of another brand will discredit the championship.

I'd personally love a show with no storylines, just built around who's the better man. Think of the character build that would give to tag teams and undercard champions! A solid month of guys talking about why they're the best, and why the other guys are not. Continuing their respective paths on each show, but having that time each week to be showcased as champions... talk about "Big Match Feel", with nothing on the line but pride. People'd buy the crap out of that I think.
