BRM Reviews the 4/1/2015 Lucha Underground (great)

BIG RYCK & HIS FRIENDS SHOW UP IN DARIO’S OFFICE- His friends are a luchador named “Killshot” and Ryck’s cousin “The Mac.” Not even ten seconds in, and I’ve already burst out laughing.
Other than that, this segment was actually very good. Ryck is on to Dario, Dario is scared to death of Ryck, but Ryck likes money and titles even more, so he’ll forgo burning Dario’s eye with his cigar for now so that he can be in the Trios Tag Title Tournament.

There is a new band playing. I’ll pretend that this is Matt Striker’s fault for getting the name of the last band wrong and they walked out. The new band is singing a song that has the word “Lucha” a lot. I’m not sure if that is better or if it is too corny.

JOHNY MUNDO vs. ANGELICO- 7.75/10
An awesome display of athleticism.

BLACK LOTUS VIDEO PACKAGE- terrible. It looked more like a commercial for a spin-off than it did like an important segment. Why have these goofy graphics? Can’t we just get shots of her and her new master (Dragon Azteca) training and shots of her writing in her diary while she narrates?

ALBERTO EL PATRON & JOHNNY MUNDO MEET IN A BATHROOM- great!

DARIO CUETO TELLS SEXY STAR WHO HERE PARTNERS WILL BE- great.
She’ll be teaming with Super Fly and (much more interestingly) Pentagon Jr. I was curious where this Pentagon Jr. thing is going, but Dario’s last line here (this could be your big break) makes me smell a rat.

BEST OF FIVE SERIES MATCH: Drago(1 win) vs. Aerostar(2 wins)- 4/10
Short, but that was the right decision because the winner was practically a given, and they did a roll-up finish to protect Aerostar from looking bad by losing so quickly and used the post-match handshake to show us that this story is moving along and that the final match will definitely be something to see.

DARIO CUETO MEETS WITH SON OF HAVOC, IVELISSE, & ANGELICO- okay.
He says they all stink as singles wrestlers, so he’s making them a trios team. They don’t like it. I would have been fine if this if not for Ivelisse’s “he didn’t dump me! I do the dumping around here!” line and Son of Havok’s follow-up at the end “for the record, I dumped her.” It was just so sit-commy. To contrast, I thought that their arguing at the end came off as very natural.
All of that being said, I am quite curious to see where this goes.

TRIOS TAG TEAM TITLE TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND MATCH: Big Ryck, The Mack, & Killshot vs. Sexy Star, Pentagon Jr. & Superfly- 6.75/10
This show has now been on the air for over six months, and only now has Vampiro decided to point out that Big Ryck smoking a cigar sets a bad example for the children.
The announcers (especially Striker) build up this big deal about how trios wrestling was different from the six man tag team matches that we American and Canadian fans are used to… and then they never in any way explained what made it different. This was made even more infuriating by the fact that the big difference between the two, that tags aren’t necessary in trios matches, was an important part of this match.
The match was very fun.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- good.
Pentagon Jr. tries to break Superfly’s arm, but Sexy Star makes the save.

A great show from Lucha Underground.

STUPID ANNOUNCER QUOTES:
1. After Angelico rolls out of the way so Mundo can’t go for his finisher, Striker describes it as “smart.” Duh. Vamprio, being an idiot, asks if it was “smart? Or not that smart? All you’re gonna do is make Mr. Mundo angry.”
A double whammy here: 1) how stupid do you have to be to think it’s not smart to avoid getting hit by a move, and secondly, why would that make Mundo any angrier than, say kicking him in face?

2. Matt Striker- “the serpentine Luchador, Drago.”
Serpentine? Ah. Because he has horns, like a serpent…? I guess. How about sticking to normal words, Striker? Or at least one that don’t make you sound like an idiot?
