Everlast Reviews GBGW GBG vs. DANMARK

Post by Chris Everlast » Feb 17th, '15, 04:57

In a strange turn of events, I've discovered the Swedish wrestling scene. I had no idea this actually existed, but I'm quite grateful that it does. For the sake of exposure for my dear kinsmen I thought I'd review a show or two from various promotions. This time I've chosen to review GBG Wrestling (Gothenburg Wrestling)'s show "GBG vs. DANMARK" from the 12/01/13. I probably won't go as in-depth as our dear in-house critical powerhouse BRM might, and I'll tone down the Everlastness in order to escape being called a little prick during the GBGW's booking-meetings.

PROMO-VID ABOUT THE BUILD-UP TO THE SHOW - 6/10
DPW's (Danish Pro-Wrestling/Dansk Pro-Wrestling)'s authority figure Mr. PPV apparently challenged GBGW's authority figure Lady Dolores to a versus-show months prior. It feels really corny to watch a promo-package in Swedish. It did well in what it was supposed to do though - it showed us the wrestlers of note and what was at stake.

THE DANISH WRESTLERS ARRIVE AT THE "ARENA" - Good segment.
The Danes make their way into the nightclub hosting the event, 'Trädgårn'. Confrontation with the mainface Conny Mejsel and the rest of the Swedish crew that's present. Again; adjusting to hearing smack-talk in Swedish is something on my part, but the segment did well in making the Danes seem like unlikeable bastards. The Danish title-belts look way better than the GBGW-belt.

LADY DOLORES HOLDS AN OPENING PROMO - Good segment.
Announces the opener as a five-way elimination match. Hypes show. She has a sweet hat.

DON KALIF vs. NIFELWARG vs. LA VIUDA NEGRA vs. HUCKLEBERRY SINN vs. TEEN WOLF - 4/10
I was totally caught off-guard by La Viuda Negra being a woman. Props to her. Don Kalif hands Nifelwarg an envelope apparently filled with cash and sics him onto Huckleberry Sinn. I smell that everyone else has been paid off too, considering neither Negra or Teen Wolf is getting involved. Teen Wolf joins in on beating on Huckleberry. Huckleberry Sinn gets eliminated - Teen Wolf insists on taking on Viuda Negra himself and gets clotheslined and a bodyslam for it. I'm not sure whether it's lazy booking or brilliant booking to have two squaring off while the rest of the opponents just stand in their respective corners. It does make Don Kalif seem like a giant a-hole, but at the same time I can't help but feel a little disappointed. Viuda Negra gets eliminated after Nifelwarg jumps her from behind, and Don Kalif immediately turns on Teen Wolf. "Kill Kalif"-chants. Kalif absolutely batters Teen Wolf with a clothesline that made the whole room wince. Kalif hits his finisher but decides not to pin him. Hits him with it a second time and botches a cover. Nifelwarg stops the pin by tapping Kalif on the shoulder - Kalif goes out to get another envelope of money. Nifelwarg hits a Wasteland and lays him out for Kalif to hit a bodysplash which finally puts out Teen Wolf. Nifelwarg gets the new envelope and Kalif does a fingerpoke of doom. Kalif goes for a pin, but Kalif doesn't pin him and asks him to stand up. Another fingerpoke of doom, this time on Kalif gives Nifelwarg the win. This gives Nifelwarg the opportunity to choose his opponent for the next show. Steinbolt, the GBGW champino comes otu to congratulate Kalif and its on to the next segment.

MR. PPV PEPTALKS THE DANES - No rating.
I don't understand their dialect of Danish too well, but they seem like a-holes so take it for what it's worth.

CONNY MEJSEL AND HUCKLEBERRY SINN RIBS THE DANES - What the fuck.
They piss in a guy's waterbottle.

MR. PPV & THE DANES PROMO - Good segment.
The Danes get their horrible rendition of the Danish national theme interrupted by the crowd's boos. They threaten to go back to Danmark to a ginormous pop and a "Go Home to Denmark *clap clap clapclapclap*"-chant.

MICHAEL FYNNE vs. CONNY MEJSEL - 7/10
Michael Fynne gets heckled for his pants. I feel tempted to pull out a "What Bar?"-here. Conny Mejsel is amazingly over as the hometown hero. The mullet on him though. Michael Fynne plays the chicken-shit heel and gets out of the ring at the start of the match. They lock up and throws Fynne to the outside again. Another lock-up and Conny sends Fynne to the floor. Mat-wrestling that goes back and forth and goes into a chin-lock. It's amazing how Conny Mejsel, the world's most average man, is so over. It has to be his stache. The matc h continues to go back and forth until Mejsel gets the upper-hand and puts the beatdown on Fynne. Props to Mejsel, he has a sweet bodyslam. "Kill the Dane"-chants when Fynne goes for a leg-drop (apparently called "The Boom Drop") and a near-fall. Mejsel goes for his finisher but his countered. Fynne shows off and goes for a cutter but is countered again and Mejsel goes for the Screwdriver, a package pile-driver for the pinfall. (It's funny because mejsel is the Swedish word for screwdriver.) Conny helps the Dane up to his feet but gets a slap in return before Fynne scampers off to the outside.

THE DANISH TAG-TEAM CHAMPS D-KOOL DRINKS PISS -
Horrible acting.

DOPPELGANGSTER vs. HANK HAVOC -6/10
Doppelgangster is apparently a Swedish turncoat. Havoc has a bandaged shoulder. Not very convincing bandage, mind you. Story of the match is Doppel focusing in on that injured arm. Doppel continues to focus in on Havoc's arm. Havoc gives Doppel the worst chops I've ever seen and luckily Doppel pokes him in the eye to stop the embarrassment. Really dodgy-looking moonsault gives Doppel the nearfall. Beautiful bridging german-suplex. Don Kalif is standing at the entrance ramp, for some reason. Havoc gets on the top rope, and Kalif shakes the top-rope to make him jump down. He continues to distract Havoc and Doppel uses the distraction to his advantage for a flying knee. Doppelgangster wins.

HANK HAVOC COMPLAINS ABOUT DON KALIF TO AGUILO ROJA - Good fun.
Aguilo Roja is a Mexican Luchadore and doesn't understand. It's pretty funny.

D-KOOL CONFRONTS LADY DOLORES - Good segment.
D-Kool corners Lady Dolores and seems to be talking smack about their opponents, Scandinavian Shiva and Bad Budda. Conveniently, their opponents are right behind them, sending D-Kool scampering out of the room.

AGUILO ROJA vs. FVN - 8/10
FVN is apparently DPW's Lightweight Champion. It seems to be non-title, though. FVN starts the match off with slapping Roja to a chorus of boos. FVN screams "MY HAIR! MY HAIR!" when Roja gets him into a side headlock. Brilliant. The crowd really hates his guts. Beautiful Northern's Lights-suplex with a bridge on FVN's part. Roja near beheads FVN with a Helluva Kick. Absolutely loved this match, but not because of Roja. FVN was absolutely brilliant. Roja wins. "Olé"-chants for Roja. Where's El Generico when you need him?

D-KOOL vs. SCANDINAVIAN SHIVA & BAD BUDDHA -
Buddha looks like A-Train Light. D-Kool are the DPW Tag champs. I really feel like this match drags; but maybe its not the participants' fault. I feel like every match is booked the same; with every Dane being chickenshit and avoiding confrontation for the start of the match. I feel like it takes away from it all. Standard tag-team fare with Shiva as the face-in-peril. D-Kool goes over after interference from Mr. PPV.

CONNY MEJSEL PEP-TALKS STEINBOLT - Good stuff.
Conny says how the vendetta between Steinbolt and Conny is for another day and that it's about the pride of Gothenburg. Steinbolt promises Conny that he's doing it for the good of GBGW.

STEINBOLT vs. CHAOS - No rating. Good segment.
Chaos is apparently the European Heavyweight champion. Steinbolt's the GBGW-champion. He's also the champion of bacne, from the looks of it. They trade taunts for a while, and the crowd cheers for the hometown guy, Steinbolt. They lock up, and after a sudden fingerpoke of doom, Steinbolt is on his back and gets pinned for three. Lady Dolores gets on the mic and declares that it's gonna be a tag-team match instead. Steinbolt and Chaos against Bad Buddha and Conny Mejsel.

STEINBOLT & CHAOS vs. CONNY MEJSEL & BAD BUDDHA - 8/10
Crowd loves that Conny Mejsel is getting a chance to beat the snot out of Chaos and Steinbolt. It goes back and forth until Buddha gets tagged in and becomes the face-in-peril.
When Conny finallygets the hot-tag both Steinbolt and Chaos bail from the ring. Conny now becomes the face-in-peril. Steinbolt ditches Chaos and walks out on the match with the GBGW-title in hand. Buddha and Mejsel goes for rock, papper, scissors to decide who stays to fight Chaos and Mejsel wins.

Conny gets spanked around by Chaos, but Shiva steals Mr. PPV's chair and smacks Chaos over the head with it. Oddly enough, no disqualification. Mejsel hits the Screwdriver for the win. The GBGW-roster comes out to celebrate their victory over Denmark.

FINAL THOUGHTS -
It's weird to watch wrestling in Swedish environment, but I'd definitely say it was good. Might be worth it for some fo you guys to check it out - they've several shows up on their YouTube-channel, gbgwrestling.

Thanks for the review. The best thing you can do to bring attention to a promotion is let others know about it.

Also, "Dopplegangster" is an AWESOME name.
