Dragon Gate USA returned to Brooklyn, NY at the Lyceum last night. I was told it was a really good show.
I see a lot of live wrestling obviously but I was bummed I missed last night as it was Chris Hero challenging for DGUSA champion Johnny Gargano and I am told they had a great match with some awesome storytelling in the ring. There was a great spot where Gargano hit the Pedigree and Hero kicked out at one, then went nuts with offense, obviously a nod to his WWE release. The place came unglued for that. After the bout, they did an angle where AR Fox came out and offered Hero a shot at the EVOLVE title. Hero apparently cut a really good promo after the match and at some point, got cut as he was bleeding hardway.
Before the match they had a "roast" for Gargano in honor of his two year anniversary as DGUSA champ. I was told by two people the segment didn't work.
Other results from the show:
*The Young Bucks defeated Masaaki Mochizuki & AR Fox in what was said to be a big-time highspots oriented bout. They demanded a rematch, which led to the Bravados coming out and attacking them, so this may have been a double turn. If they allow the Bucks to keep their edge, it'll work for sure. In some ways, The Bravados winning the belts was probably the best thing Gabe Sapolsky has booked in a year. They are vastly improved in-ring workers since going to Europe but since they don't do the 10,000 moves a second DGUSA flashy spots and aren't the Young Bucks (who the crowd adores), they the first thing to get some legitimate anger out of the DGUSA fans since, well, ever. Their title win in Queens was a mix of legitimate shock and anger from the crowd.
*Rich Swann defeated Trent Baretta. Said to be a sick match in terms of just insane pro wrestling and near falls. Swann, if his health holds up and the right person spots him, will be the Rey Mysterio Jr. of the next generation - he's got great charisma and timing and some unique moves. His "All Night Long" entrance and dancing brings the house up in a way that Public Enemy's entrance did a generation ago in Philadelphia. Baretta's release from WWE really was WWE's loss as he's had awesome matches everywhere from NYC to Tokyo since departing.
*Tony Nese defeated Ricochet in what was said to have been a great match. Nese's confidence is way up after working in Dragon Gate in Japan for three weeks. Su Young is awesome as a manager and reminds me a lot of Francine in ECW. Lots of back and forth wrestling and some crazy aerial stuff from Ricochet. Mr. A is just perfect in his role.
*The Bravados defeated Caleb Konley & Andrew Everett vs Jigsaw & Fire Ant in a Three-Way Dance. This was said to be good. Jigsaw and Ant work hard. Everett really showed some good personality and Konley is a workhorse. Jigsaw laid out Ant and turned heel after the match. They also did an angle before the show where Larry Dallas, who can't get it in his head that Konley is through with him, tried to reconcile and got the crap kicked out of him.
*Jimmy Susumu defeated Chuck Taylor. Said to be a fun match with some comedy early before they got into the back and forth athletics and near falls.
*Mr. Touchdown pinned Jervis Cottonbelly. Touchdown has a great look and gimmick and looks good in the ring. I really expect he'll get a lot of attention in the next few years. Mostly comedy.
*Jon Davis killed Steven Walters in the opener. There were some iPPV issues both nights with the feeds being choppy. Part of the issue with iPPV is that when you are using the lines in the venue, you are only going to get what they can provide and since DGUSA is running tiny venues not made to host iPPVs, well, sometimes the quality control is going to lay an egg and that's apparently what happened. It's frustrating for all involved, obviously. The promotion offered a free VOD showing to those who ordered the show.
