Kurt Angle: Submission Specialist

Post by cero2k » Nov 13th, '13, 12:49

Found this on reddit by user cenabert

Kurt Angle's Submission Win Records
I made this little list just because Kurt Angle is a freakin boss and I'd like to demonstrate why.

VAL VENIS: Raw 4/3/00 (With the Crossface Chickenwing) (Angle's first ever submission victory.)

THE COLLECTOR: OVW Rockin' Rumble 2000 (I have no idea who this is.)

CRASH HOLLY: Raw 11/13/00 (Debut of the Ankle Lock.)

CHRIS BENOIT: Smackdown 3/3/01 (In a handicap match with William Regal, they had the Ankle Lock and Regal Stretch applied at the same time), Royal Rumble 2003

JEFF HARDY: Raw 6/18/01

RAVEN: Raw 7/16/01

BOOKER T: Smackdown 7/24/01 (Angle won the WCW title in this match, but lost it the next Raw), Raw 9/24/01

LANCE STORM: Smackdown 7/31/01

KANYON: Smackdown 8/23/01

ROB VAN DAM: Raw 9/10/01 (Angle won the Hardcore title here. However, Steve Austin attacked him afterwards with a chair, enabling RVD to win it right back due to the 24/7 rule.)

STEVE AUSTIN: Unforgiven '01 (Angle wasn't even 2 years into his WWF run and he submitted Steve Austin. That's insane. He's the only man to submit Austin alone. Jericho and Benoit also did it with a Walls/Crossface combo.)

SHANE MCMAHON: Raw 10/1/01 (Shane McMahon's only submission loss, actually.)

CHRISTIAN: Smackdown 10/23/01

WILLIAM REGAL: Raw 10/29/01

KANE: Smackdown 10/30/01 (Correct me if I'm wrong but this might be Kane's only submission loss.)

THE GODFATHER: Raw 2/11/02 (Pimpin' ain't easy.)

BIG SHOW: Raw 3/11/02 (In a tag match with Booker T, vs. Show and Edge.)

HULK HOGAN: King of the Ring 2002 (Hulk Hogan, people. Hulk fucking Hogan.)

THE UNDERTAKER: Smackdown 7/4/02 (This is a rather controviersial finish. Angle had Undertaker in a triangle choke. As Taker tried to fight out of it, he unknowingly had Angle's shoulders pinned to the mat, and he tapped just as the ref counted 3. The match was ruled a draw, and Undertaker retained his title. Still, Kurt Angle made the Undertaker willingly submit, so it counts. He is the only man to ever do this.)

MARK HENRY: Smackdown 8/13/02 (This ain't what I do.)

REY MYSTERIO: Summerslam 2002 (This match is fucking amazing. Go watch it right now), Smackdown 2/7/05, Smackdown 3/31/06

EDGE: No Mercy 2002 (Also an awesome match, w/ Benoit vs. Edge and Mysterio.)

SHELTON BENJAMIN: Smackdown 7/15/03 (This was a Falls Count Anywhere handicap match with Angle taking on Benjamin, Charlie Haas and Big Show), Raw 8/22/05, Raw 11/14/05

BROCK LESNAR: Summerslam 2003 (BROCK NO LIKE. BROCK SMASH BALDY MAN.)

JOHN CENA: No Mercy 2003, No Way Out 2004 (Times sure do change, don't they?)

HARDCORE HOLLY: Smackdown 2/5/04, Velocity 8/17/04 (Kurt Angle was on Velocity?)

CHARLIE HAAS: Smackdown 8/5/04

EDDIE GUERRERO: Summerslam 2004, Smackdown 9/2/04

DEAN VISK: Smackdown 11/18/04 (Who the hell is this jabroni?)

SEBASTIAN MCAULEY: Smackdown 12/1/04 (Job city bitch, job job city bitch)

SANTA CLAUS: Armageddon 2004 (Cole saying "Just tap out already, Santa" is one of my fondest wrestling memories.)

MATT STRYKER: Smackdown 12/30/04 (No, not that one.)

RODERICK STRONG: Smackdown 1/13/05 (What the fuck? Roderick Strong was in WWE?)

NUNZIO: Smackdown 2/2/05

MATT MARTEL: Smackdown 2/24/05 (FYI this is Matt Striker. Lol.)

MARTY JANNETTY: Smackdown 3/17/05 (The man, the myth, the legend)

SHAWN MICHAELS: Wrestlemania 21 (Shawn was in the Ankle Lock for a full minute before tapping, longer than anyone else.)

JOSE MACIAS: Smackdown 4/7/05 (Jobbers. Jobbers everywhere.)

ROBERT FURY: Some random episode of Smackdown. I'm tired of all these jobbers.

EUGENE: Summerslam 2005 (How did this match even happen?), Raw 9/5/05

TAJIRI: Raw 10/31/05

JOEY MERCURY: Smackdown 1/27/06

JOHNNY NITRO: Smackdown 2/17/06

RANDY ORTON: Smackdown 4/14/06, One Night Stand 2006

JUSTIN CREDIBLE: ECW 6/13/06 (There was absolutely no reason to put Kurt Angle on the ECW brand.)

THE BROOKLYN BRAWLER: ECW 8/1/06

SAMOA JOE: Genesis 2006 (And so starts the madness of TNA.)

AJ STYLES: Impact 5/3/07, Sacrifice 2012

STING: Sacrifice 2007 (3 way for the NWA title including Christian Cage)

KAZARIAN: Impact 3/11/08, Slammiversary VIII, Slammiversary 2012

B.G. JAMES: Impact 12/16/08 (Oh, you didn't know?)

KARL ANDERSON: NJPW Wrestle Kingdom III (This was an 8 man tag. Angle teamed with Riki Choshu, Masahiro Chono, and Kevin Nash. They went up against Anderson, Giant Bernard, Takashi Iizuka and Tomohiro Ishii.)

GIANT BERNARD: NJPW Circuit '09 Day 9 (Although nowadays he's gettin' jiggy and losing a lot with Brodus Clay, Tensai was a pretty big deal in Japan.)

DESMOND WOLFE: Turning Point 2009

MICK FOLEY: Victory Road 2009 (Mick Foley's only tap out loss. This would have been a huge deal if it had happened 8 to 10 years earlier. It didn't, so it wasn't.)

CHRIS DANIELS: Impact 2/15/10

D'ANGELO DINERO: Victory Road 2010

JEFF JARRETT: Sacrifice 2011, Slammiversary IX

ROBBIE E: Impact 7/21/12

DEVON: Turning Point 2012

MR ANDERSON: Impact 1/25/13

For those keeping score at home, that is a whopping 60 seperate competitors, a number few wrestlers, if any, have achieved. Of those 60:

15 of them are former WWE champions
13 of them are former World Heavyweight champions
7 of them are former TNA champions
5 of them are former NWA champions
and 8 of them are former ECW champions (Including from 2006-2010)

All of those names include 27 former world champions in some way. Plus another 6 former Intercontinental champions. Plus 2 former X Division champions. Plus 1 former US champion and 1 former European champion. Plus Santa Claus.

Oh, it's true. It's damn true.

Hate to burst this guy's bubble, but I bet you if you looked at Benoit or Bret's submission wins stats, you would see something similar. It just comes from having a long career and primarily using a submission finisher.

yeah, i agree. Still impressive. particularly being the only man to submit both Taker and Mankind if those facts are indeed true.

Don't forget Hogan. I read somewhere that this was the only clean submission loss of Hogan's career.

Hogan tapped clean to sting at starcade 97. i also think he tapped to Luger's Torture Rack at some point also that year

Well... clean is a funny term where Starrcade 97 is involved because technically Hogan should have won the match because the ref f*cked up by not fast-counting Sting. (I actually heard a theory by Bryan Alvarez that Hogan paid the ref off to screw up the count because a similar thing happened on Nitro a few weeks later when Savage was too slow and out of position to break up a pin on Big Show, so the ref had to do something weird and as a result it looked like Hogan actually cleanly pinned him when Savage was supposed to break up the pin).

Pretty sure you're right about Luger, though.
