BRM Reviews the 3/9/2016 Lucha Underground (awesome)

Post by Big Red Machine » Mar 10th, '16, 11:52

SEXY STAR & THE MACK BACKSTAGE- taken on its own (and also with most of the other stuff we’ve seen since returned to the Temple) this was great, but it really just doesn’t seem to fit with that first segment they did (end of S2, ep4) where it seemed like Marty and his sister were literally right behind Sexy Star (maybe if she hadn’t pointed during that segment it would all mesh much better).

MARTY “THE MOTH” MARTINEZ vs. THE MACK (w/Sexy Star)- no rating, decent segment.
Marty is being creepy right behind and Melissa Santos just does her job and says his name doesn’t react until she is done (and even then only barely). That’s being a professional right there. The fans chant “NO MEANS NO!” at Marty, which is a little bit creepier when you realize that they don’t actually kayfabe know that he kidnapped Sexy Star and did G-d knows what to her.
I don’t have a problem with the lights going off in Lucha Underground when something/someone who is either supernatural or potentially supernatural due to backstory stuff is involved (and the Moth Family might well fit into this), but I didn’t like the execution of it here. It literally felt like they just turned off some of the lights rather than some supernatural occurrence.
Marty used the lights going off and his sister appearing as a distraction and hit The Mack with his finisher and got the pin. Then he demanded that everyone bow down to his sister, whose name I wasn’t sure if I got down correctly, so I just called her “Cheerleader Mothlissa.” (EDIT: Wikipedia says her name is “Mariposa.”) Sexy Star did a meh job of cowering in fear. Marty’s sister demanded that she get up, and when she did, Marty’s sister kicked her in the head.

With that crazy face-paint/mask combination and winged get-up, you know there are already people out there writing Mariposa/Drago slash-fic.

FENIX VIDEO PACKAGE- awesome!
The whole thing about defying the odds and myths becoming legends added a lot to his quest for the Lucha Underground Championship.

DRAGO ACCOSTS JACK EVANS IN A BATHROOM AT THE TEMPLE- cool… and a little weird
SEE! I told you Drago lives in that bathroom!
P.J. Black shows up and attacks Drago from behind and now we’ve got a big nun-chuck fight (they weren’t used much in the actual fighting, but they were swung a lot) until Jack and P.J. overwhelm Drago, but then Aerostar teleports into the bathroom carrying his glow-in-the-dark Space Nun-chucks to make the save. All of this really happened.

NO DISQUALIFICATIONS MATCH: Cage vs. Johnny Mundo (w/Taya)- Or not. Apparently it’s going to be...

NO DISQUALIFICATIONS MATCH: Cage vs. Taya- 6/10
Taya cut a good promo on Cage before the match explaining Johnny’s reasoning for not wrestling, but it seems a little weird that Johnny is allowed to back out of a fight he had previously agreed to (he must have agreed to it or else they wouldn’t have advertised it, right?).
The match… was what it was. I didn’t like Johnny offering Taya up as the sacrificial lamb because it felt like the wrong kind of heel move for him. I guess they could go in a direction where she now feuds with him after the Cage feud is over, but it feels WAY too early to split them up. They haven’t even been together for a full show.

FAMOUS B COMMERCIAL- fun… but I’d like to see them go somewhere. They don’t need to be on TV every week if they’re not going to do something with it soon.

SON OF HAVOC, IVELISSE, ANGELICO BACKSTAGE- very good.
They’ve got their rematch next week, but if they lose, they all have to leave The Temple forever.

LUCHA UNDERGROUND TITLE MATCH: Mil Muertes(c) (w/Catrina) vs. Pentagon Jr. vs. Prince Puma- 8.5/10
Apparently all Lucha Underground Championship matches are now No DQ’s, No Count-outs. I just don’t understand why you would take a booking tool away from yourself. A count-out would be a fantastic way for someone to actually get a win over Mil in a title match without actually beating him (and then you obviously build to a Falls Count Anywhere rematch).
While they were brawling in the bleachers, they brawled past a fan wearing a Prince Puma mask and a Pentagon Jr. t-shirt. That was kind of visually jarring.
They made great use of both the three-way stip and their surroundings to do some crazy stuff. They also did a good job of making Mil looking like even more a beast, as the two top contenders working together weren’t able to put him down.

THEN FENIX SHOWED UP- he says he is cashing in the Gift of the Gods. I assume the match will be next week. With so much (at least in terms of title contention) wrapping up recently, it feels like they are setting up to use this year’s Aztec Warfare more as a starting point for various stories than as an ending point. It should be interesting, and will definitely give it a different feel than last year’s.

An awesome show from Lucha Underground!

as soon as i saw Mariposa, it all made sense. she is the one to represent her tribe, not Marty

she seems like the strongest figure of the duo, the one that calls the shots, plus she has a mask.

Okay. So it's not like there is some important evidence I missed or something.
