Report: WWE offers AJ Styles a “big money contract”

Before news broke of AJ Styles possibly heading to WWE (he has not signed an actual WWE contract yet) Ring of Honor was trying to re-sign Styles to a long-term and big-money deal. The contract would see Styles work for ROH and New Japan Pro Wrestling since he is a big draw for both promotions.

According to PWTorch.com, ROH wanted to sign Styles to a six-figure deal, but WWE offered Styles with what has been described as a “blow-away offer.”

Once Styles told ROH about WWE’s offer and that he plans to sign it, ROH removed Styles from all dates he was originally advertised for. It’s always possible that he does have the option to have an ROH farewell date. ROH is trying to keep WWE from taking their talents, so they’re offering big money/exclusive deals to their talents. The best example of this was with The Young Bucks.

It should be noted that Styles said on record in previous interviews that he was looking for financial stability for his family well after his wrestling career is over.

“The thing that makes wrestling most interesting to me is going to be the business that occurs after the match is over,” Styles said in an interview with Ring Rust Radio in December. “A lot of people frown on that and say money isn’t everything. Well I say it depends on how much you have saved. My goal when I retire is to not be in a wheelchair or walk with a limp. Wherever I go, I will do my best, work harder than anybody there, and that’s just what I do. I only have one gear and if someone is looking for that and I can support my family while doing it, then that is what I will do.”

It's good news that ROH (read as: Sinclair Broadcasting) seems willing to spend bigger money on top talent.

It's not good that ROH was the ones who removed AJ from his remaining dates. Why wouldn't you use him to draw one last big house? And also, why would you not give the fans a chance to say goodbye?

i know that 6 figures can go from 100,000 to 999,999, so i'm not sure how much they actually offered, but it's interesting that the combined powers of ROH and whatever NJPW would pay him did not sum up to WWE. Either that or he was really tired of flying to Japan every month

WWE brings with it the famous Wrestlemania and other PPV pay days, bigger merchandise deals and bigger outside wrestling appearance fees.
I can't blame AJ for wanting even 2-3 years at WWE as if he's "Foley Frugal" with his finances he really can set himself up for life.

WWE brings with it the famous Wrestlemania and other PPV pay days, bigger merchandise deals and bigger outside wrestling appearance fees.
I can't blame AJ for wanting even 2-3 years at WWE as if he's "Foley Frugal" with his finances he really can set himself up for life.

he also gets to have some of that WWE medical and one last run in the spotlight that can make him famous for the post-WWE life

Exactly. Which they shouldn't have done. All it probably did was cost them money.

ROH just announced that AJ will be at the Duluth show for a meet-and-greet. It's a shame we couldn't get one last match out of him, as putting over a guy like Cedric or ACH could have been the beginning of a big push, or it would have been nice to finally give Cole that win over AJ he's been chasing for over a year... or just have AJ put over a Kyle O'Reilly or Bobby Fish or even put over Matt Sydal to build Sydal up for a one-off title shot or... just... something.

And that. If he can make a good enough name for himself he puts spotlight on himself if he wants to acting or something like that which is a sustainable after WWE career (like Edge has done).

WWE are prepared to pay him decent money, which most likely give a good push to him on arrival. Which is instant brand recognition for AJ. He has the name, the look, the character and the talent to do very well in WWE.
