BRM Reviews the 8/19/2015 Impact

Post by Big Red Machine » Aug 19th, '15, 21:25

OPENING SEGMENT- Jeff Jarrett shows up to talk about how awesome GFW is. He even got the fans to chant “Global Force!” Both Jeff Jarrett and Josh Matthews have said that Bully Ray is “missing…” so is the angle that he is okay but isn’t showing up to work?

Soooo… Jeff’s in charge this week, too? It would have been nice to have Dixie announce that.

EC III shows up and says he won’t defend the title against PJ Black. Karen accuses him of attacking both Bully and Drew. Jeff says he will convince Dixie to convince the Board of Directors to order Ethan to either defend the title or vacate it. All of this booking power/ownership/board of directors stuff really feels like it has been pulled out of their asses.

DREW PROMO- good. Apparently he is facing Eli Drake in a No DQs match later. Speaking of No DQ’s matches…

OPEN MIC CHALLENGE MATCH: Mr. Anderson vs. Bram- 6.5/10
The match was good for what it was. It really feels like the right guy went over, but at the same time, this seems to hurt Bram a lot more than help him.

BOBBY ROODE & JEFF JARRETT BACKSTAGE- so Jeff Jarrett has had a whole week to book this show and hasn’t told Bobby Roode what his role will be? TNA will always be TNA.

EC III PROMO- he wants Dixie to “to the right thing for TNA and do not strip me of this World Heavyweight Championship.”

REVOLUTION SEGMENT- atrocious.
They could have had Shera be a badass… but instead he likes be happy, have fun and dance. F*ck this company. Now Manik is doing it, too. This is f*cking terrible.
And now it’s worse because the babyface suckerpunched the heel. Then he got his ass kicked one-on-one by Abyss.

PJ BLACK & EY SEGMENT- Eric Young is SOOOOOOO lame and terrible right now. This heel-turn of his has been an absolute disaster.

HANDICAP SIX SIDES OF STEEL MATCH: Gail Kim vs. The Dollhouse (Marti Belle & Jade)- 4.5/10
The announcers really should have pointed out that Jade and Marti could have won easily many times by walking out of the cage, but didn’t do so because their orders are to put Gail out.
Gails wins clean. The match went on loner than it needed to.

JEFF JARRETT TALKS TO DIXIE CARTER- it took them AN HOUR to get this super-important meeting arranged?
Ethan warns Dixie not to give one of Jeff’s guys a shot at the title. Dixie agrees with Jeff. This whole angle has felt like a huge waste of time.

MATT HARDY & EC III BACKSTAGE- fine for what it was, but this whole thing feels like a huge waste of time because we all know that Ethan won’t vacate the title.

GAIL IS BACKSTAGE LOOKING FOR TARYN- sure. Why not?

NO DISQUALIFICATIONS MATCH: Drew Galloway vs. Eli Drake- 7.25/10
Great weapons match.

VELVET SKY SCARES TARYN- since when was Velvet part of this?

GAIL FINDS TARYN- WHAT THE F*CK?!
So Velvet backed Taryn into a trap. Apparently Gail had set some handcuff up, just hanging there from a piece of equipment and Gail came up from behind and locked Taryn’s hand in the handcuff and went to break it with a steel chair while a very aggressive Velvet told the cameraperson to “back off, bitch. You don’t need to see this!” and we cut away. This whole thing just came off as SOOO weird. Like they are trying to force these girls in roles that are SOOO far out of character for them. Especially Velvet.

EY & CHRIS MELENDEZ SEGMENT- Sarge says he wants a rematch. EY doesn’t want to give him one… until he realizes that… yeah… this is the one where EY challenges Sarge to put his prosthetic leg on the line. This company has now become a parody.
Sarge was actually pretty decent here, so at least there was something good about this. Melendez got the best of EY and EY bailed.

JEFF & DIXIE WASTE MY TIME- and their own, too. Hey, Jeff! Maybe you should be using this time to come up with a match for Bobby Roode?

TYRUS vs. MATT HARDY- 2/10
Four matches into the show and we are finally getting our first plain old wrestling match.
Well… that was short.

POST-MATCH ANGLE- EC III jumped Matt from behind and hit him in the back of the head with the World Heavyweight Title.

TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: Ethan Carter III(c) (w/Tyrus) vs. PJ Black- 6.75/10
A good match, but that’s all it was. Will Ethan get a shot at the King of the Mountain Title now?

JEFF & DIXIE BACKSTAGE- Jeff wants to keep the TNA vs. GFW stuff going and wants to be named the new authority figure. Dixie says “I have to talk to some people about that.”

COMMERCIAL FOR NEXT WEEK’S SHOW- a bunch of undeserving people get title shots for no reason.

A good episode of Impact in the ring, but not a good one outside of it.

they just decided this, they were hoping Ray would be back by today

because they did, both Kayfabe and non-kayfabe because that bitch ray bailed.

BOBBY ROODE & JEFF JARRETT BACKSTAGE- so Jeff Jarrett has had a whole week to book this show and hasn’t told Bobby Roode what his role will be? TNA will always be TNA.
Jarrett wasn't supposed to book this show, so no, he didn't have a full week to book.

REVOLUTION SEGMENT- atrocious.
They could have had Shera be a badass… but instead he likes be happy, have fun and dance. F*ck this company. Now Manik is doing it, too. This is f*cking terrible.
Shera is anything but a badass, he just doesn't look like a badass. hopefully this dancing gimmick means that everyone turns on him and he gets fired, waste of roster spot.

I love it, ECIII being the voice of reason and only one that can see that Jeff is working Dixie is awesome.

MATT HARDY & EC III BACKSTAGE- fine for what it was, but this whole thing feels like a huge waste of time because we all know that Ethan won’t vacate the title.
it was to set up Hardy vs Tyrus, not about the title

VELVET SKY SCARES TARYN- since when was Velvet part of this?
since today, what does it matter if Gail asked for a favor or something

EY & CHRIS MELENDEZ SEGMENT- Sarge says he wants a rematch. EY doesn’t want to give him one… until he realizes that… yeah… this is the one where EY challenges Sarge to put his prosthetic leg on the line. This company has now become a parody.
Sarge was actually pretty decent here, so at least there was something good about this. Melendez got the best of EY and EY bailed.
How is that a parody? it's an awesome stipulation, hell i hope this means that Melendez now has to hop around

JEFF & DIXIE WASTE MY TIME- and their own, too. Hey, Jeff! Maybe you should be using this time to come up with a match for Bobby Roode?
fuck Bobby Roode, if he wants a match, he needs to politely ask for it

TYRUS vs. MATT HARDY- 2/10
Four matches into the show and we are finally getting our first plain old wrestling match.
Well… that was short.
you're complaining that we're getting some good matches for a 'themed' show?

POST-MATCH ANGLE- EC III jumped Matt from behind and hit him in the back of the head with the World Heavyweight Title.

TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: Ethan Carter III(c) (w/Tyrus) vs. PJ Black- 6.75/10
A good match, but that’s all it was.
what else was it supposed to be other than a match?

Then tell us this.

EC III shows up and says he won’t defend the title against PJ Black. Karen accuses him of attacking both Bully and Drew. All of this booking power/ownership/board of directors stuff really feels like it has been pulled out of their asses.

He left after the June tapings. These were in July. They should have come up with some explanation by then.

REVOLUTION SEGMENT- atrocious.

Shera is anything but a badass, he just doesn't look like a badass. hopefully this dancing gimmick means that everyone turns on him and he gets fired, waste of roster spot.
He came across fine the other week, if you can get past the broken English. He is good for exposure in India (the same way WWE kept Khali around) and he seems to have some actual potential.

Except the whole thing with the title doesn't feel like that big a deal because there's no heat to any of this. The Alliance wanted to put WWF out of business. ROH and CZW both thought that the other was complete trash. A GFW guy might win the belt? So what? It that was such a big deal they wouldn't have let Jeff compete for the King of the Mountain Title. What's the worst that happens? EC III will get his return match, and if he loses... who cares? TNA will just make another belt like they did when AJ left. I just don't feel any heat or any sense of mortal peril here. Dixie was dumb enough to let Jeff waste her TV time relentlessly shilling his company, but that's not going to kayfabe hurt TNA in the long run.
MATT HARDY & EC III BACKSTAGE- fine for what it was, but this whole thing feels like a huge waste of time because we all know that Ethan won’t vacate the title.
it was to set up Hardy vs Tyrus, not about the title
In hindsight, that is fair enough... although both Hardy vs. Tyrus and Matt's comments here were about Matt wanting and getting built for another title shot
VELVET SKY SCARES TARYN- since when was Velvet part of this?
since today, what does it matter if Gail asked for a favor or something
Because she's acting out of character. They are having her act out of charater just for the purpose of doing this semgent that is supposed to be a little... dark/creepy/whatever, and rather than take the time to set up for it in any way, they just throw this new alliance out there and expect us to accept it just because. That's bad storytelling.

Because it's so f*cking ridiculous it feels like someone trying to parody the idea of over-the-top wrestling stips (like custody of children, etc.)

JEFF & DIXIE WASTE MY TIME- and their own, too. Hey, Jeff! Maybe you should be using this time to come up with a match for Bobby Roode?
fuck Bobby Roode, if he wants a match, he needs to politely ask for it
No he doesn't. He's Bobby f*cking Roode. He's the It Factor of professional wrestling. Not having a match for him just shows you how inept of a booker Jeff Jarrett is.

TYRUS vs. MATT HARDY- 2/10
Four matches into the show and we are finally getting our first plain old wrestling match.
Well… that was short.
you're complaining that we're getting some good matches for a 'themed' show?
I'm pointing out that it's bad booking to put a whole bunch of similar matches on the same show. And this isn't a "themed" show. It's a titled one. f this was "Night of Hardcore" or whatever, I'm accept the eight million hardcore matches. This is just a show that has a title because nowadays TNA can barely go two weeks without feeling that they have to give a show a title.

A great match. At least. It's the TNA World Heavyweight Champion vs. the King of the Mountain Champion.

you're judging it like we're months in with no direction. we're barely getting started. It seems like the way they'll take is that Jarrett wants to take over TNA to have what they have, if a GFW guy wins the title, it means that Dixie can't get rid of GFW that easy, they need to keep them around while they take the title from PJ.

MATT HARDY & EC III BACKSTAGE- fine for what it was, but this whole thing feels like a huge waste of time because we all know that Ethan won’t vacate the title.

well, you start hints of yet another title show i guess

I definitely did not get any dark/creepy vibes AT ALL, nor I got any out of character from either girl, they just cornered Taryn and that was it

EY & CHRIS MELENDEZ SEGMENT- Sarge says he wants a rematch. EY doesn’t want to give him one… until he realizes that… yeah… this is the one where EY challenges Sarge to put his prosthetic leg on the line. This company has now become a parody.

you review like 5 or 6 promotions per week and this is the ridiculous thing!? it's an awesome stipulation, it's awesome heel heat

I'm judging it based on what I've seen so far. It doesn't feel like there is heat. Maybe there's some heat with EY, but everyone in TNA has heat with EY, too. What it feels like is that Dixie made up with her old friend Jeff. There is nothing that feels like animosity there. There's no tension between them. There's no tension in the matches when it looks like a GFW guy might get a win. There haven't been any hints of anything so it doesn't feel like there is some sort of need to get rid of the GFW guys. It just feels like Jeff Jarrett brought some friends to come to TNA to wrestle.
And if they are going the angle you suggested (and I'm fairly certain they are), then they should NEVER have brought up the fact that Jeff still owns part of TNA.

VELVET SKY SCARES TARYN- since when was Velvet part of this?

Did you not notice Taryn being handcuffed and Gail grabbing a chair like she was about to break this helpless girl's arm? Go back and watch these segments again and listen to Velvet's tone. They are definitely going for something dark here.

EY & CHRIS MELENDEZ SEGMENT- Sarge says he wants a rematch. EY doesn’t want to give him one… until he realizes that… yeah… this is the one where EY challenges Sarge to put his prosthetic leg on the line. This company has now become a parody.

Because this feels like... too much. Like you said... we're going to have Melendez hop around on one leg? Come on. Part of it is EY, too, who is just so completely unbelievable to me, but it just seems like too much.

JEFF & DIXIE WASTE MY TIME- and their own, too. Hey, Jeff! Maybe you should be using this time to come up with a match for Bobby Roode?

there isn't supposed to be heat here, Jarrett hasn't turned, we're still in the good GM - bad champion stage, right now it's still just a friendly rivalry to have two promotions work together or whatever, but you can already see the hints of Jarrett wanting more and more and taking small advantages from Dixie not being fully concentrated on Impact. He got himself in the KOTM match, he got his Hall of Fame, he brought his people in, then he put one of his guys in a title shot for the main title, and he's asking for full authority. from all the shit that TNA has done and the shit that this angle will likely become, everything from Jarrett coming in up to this show, it has been nicely crafted, even Ray leaving was somewhat a blessing in disguise for me

that's not that dark, it's a blood feud between chicks. Taryn messed with Gail's dude and tried to take her out, so Gail retaliates trying to break her arm. It's fair

Nothing you're saying is wrong. What I'm saying is that at this point- without any heat, I have no reason to give a crap. It's just guys vs. guys. If there's no heat and everyone is friends, why should it matter if PJ Black wins the TNA World Heavyweight Title. We have no indication that he'll do anything heelish like avoid defending it against TNA guys or throw the belt in the trash, so why should we care?

since today, what does it matter if Gail asked for a favor or something
Because she's acting out of character. They are having her act out of charater just for the purpose of doing this semgent that is supposed to be a little... dark/creepy/whatever, and rather than take the time to set up for it in any way, they just throw this new alliance out there and expect us to accept it just because. That's bad storytelling.
I definitely did not get any dark/creepy vibes AT ALL, nor I got any out of character from either girl, they just cornered Taryn and that was it
Did you not notice Taryn being handcuffed and Gail grabbing a chair like she was about to break this helpless girl's arm? Go back and watch these segments again and listen to Velvet's tone. They are definitely going for something dark here.

that's not that dark, it's a blood feud between chicks. Taryn messed with Gail's dude and tried to take her out, so Gail retaliates trying to break her arm. It's fair
I found the whole tone of this VERY dark. Like Gail has gone beyond being a babyface and is instead acting like she's some sort of spirit of vengeance.

there isn't supposed to be heat here, Jarrett hasn't turned, we're still in the good GM - bad champion stage, right now it's still just a friendly rivalry to have two promotions work together or whatever, but you can already see the hints of Jarrett wanting more and more and taking small advantages from Dixie not being fully concentrated on Impact. He got himself in the KOTM match, he got his Hall of Fame, he brought his people in, then he put one of his guys in a title shot for the main title, and he's asking for full authority. from all the shit that TNA has done and the shit that this angle will likely become, everything from Jarrett coming in up to this show, it has been nicely crafted, even Ray leaving was somewhat a blessing in disguise for me
Nothing you're saying is wrong.
The heat is in ECIII for not wanting to put his title on the line against the super cool darewolf PJ Black, they're still faces, you should be hoping that ECIII finally loses the title, at this point of the story, that's what you should be caring for. If you really wanna hate on GFW, you need to wait for the turn, it's only been two shows since they came in

she's definitely not the happy-go-lucky babyface anymore, she's only gone darker in a "Black Mask" Generico way, but we've seen this since she returned, it's not like a sudden change this episode

Except that the way they framed, both on this show and with the brawl they had the other week and Pope's needlessly anti-GFW commentary) it didn't make it feel like that.

But in Velvet the change was sudden.
And even in this one, Gail seemed a level beyond what she has been. She seemed like a creepy heel rather than an angry babyface

it shows that there is some animosity, but we've never seen anything to say, "THESE guys are the heels'

I can't actually remember anything Velvet has done she fought Madison, and it's not like he had a really crisp gimmick at that point

But it all feels so forced and at odds with the way things are going. The angle just isn't working for me in any way.

She was feuding with Angelina (which never got resolved because Angelina and Davey wanted a baby. She was doing this whole weird stoic thing and was using the stunner.
