Okay, this HORRID comic book art NEEDS to go. 1000000%. Bram looks happy and jovial. Angelina looks like a dude in drag, Roode and EY both look f*cking stupid, and everyone else looks really bad.
We open with Josh Matthews promising that tonight would be about “the culmination of rivalries.” Well one of the matches they are advertising is Roode vs. EY, which I could have sworn we just saw the final encounter of a few weeks ago.
OPENING SEGMENT- terrible.
Based on his attire, EY appears to be the president of a biker club. Josh Matthews refers to EY as a “tyrant,” which makes me suspect that Josh doesn’t know what that word means.
Eric Young vows to end Roode’s career. This brings out Bobby Roode, who, when called out by his former best friend now turned worst enemy who cost him the world heavyweight title and has just vowed to end his career… he calmly cuts a promo.
Roode’s promo consists of him telling us that he has already beaten EY TWICE in big gimmick matches… so why should I believe that this will be the end?
For some reason they decide that tonight’s match should be a…
SUBMISSION MATCH: Bobby Roode vs. Eric Young- 7/10
The rules were No DQ’s and No Count-outs, but if someone got to the ropes, you they had to break the hold… which I kind of like. There might not be a penalty for not breaking, but a submission where the opponent is in the ropes is still illegal, and thus you can’t win a match that way.
Apparently the match has to end in the ring, which wasn’t how I understood Josh’s reading of the rules, and it would have been much easier for Josh to just state that at the beginning. Nothing is more annoying as a viewer than to get excited about something, but then have the ref say it’s illegal and then have the announcer explain to you why it is illegal afterwards. It makes it feel like the announcers and wrestlers are just pulling sh*t out of their asses.
I HATE it when they do crap like have Roode hurt his own knee randomly doing a move. Would it really be that hard to make EY look more dangerous by having HIM be the one to hurt Roode in their match?
Roode loses because of a stupid ref bump for no reason. Why won’t this feud end?
WOLVES PROMO- They’ll have to relinquish the title because Eddie is injured. Awesome promo by Davey.
CHRISTY HEMME INTERVIEWS BOBBY LASHLEY- She asks him what his motivation is in tonight’s match. Um… how about TO WIN THE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE?
ANGELINA LOVE vs. GAIL KIM- 5/10
Where are the Bro-Mans? No explanation for that.
THE CAST OF GHOST ASYLUM VISITS JAMES STORM’S REVOLUTION- definitely falls into the category of so bad it’s good… but that’s not what you want from guys like Storm and Abyss, who are supposed to come off as dangerous. And this will be a RECURRING SEGMENT ON IMPACT! YIPPEE!
FALLS COUNT ANYWHERE MATCH: Magnus vs. Bram- 4/10
Magnus is so scared for Mickie’s health that it allows Bram to takeover. Then Bram goes to menace Mickie. I’ve already seen this from this feud. I want things to actually MOVE ALONG.
Oh great. Now Mickie is the damsel in distress, and has completely forgotten how to roll out of the ring, despite her over fifteen years of in-ring experience. And now JAMES STORM makes the save for Mickie? WHAT THE F*CK?! WHY?!
Anyway, they went on for way too long after that, and I don’t there was even a single pinfall attempt outside of the ring, making the whole gimmick pointless.
They’re hyping up next week’s show as a “live Twitter episode.” Oh dear G-d.
JB INTERVIEWS KURT ANGLE- good promo
MAGNUS, MICKIE, & STORM BACKSTAGE- okay… I assume Storm has some ulterior motive here. I mean… he’d better, or else this will be one of the dumbest face turns ever.
TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: Kurt Angle(c) vs. Bobby Lashley- 7.75/10
An awesome match marred by a finish that looked like Lashley’s shoulder was definitely up and like there was no way the ref could have called it correctly from his position. Yup. Replay 100% confirms this, and shows that Hebner should be fired for complete and total incompetence. In other words, more stupid TNA overbooking.
TNA put on a very good show tonight. There were very few backstage segments, which I liked because TNA’s segment are often filled with stupidity, but at the same time, it did feel disconnected from other stuff, and I think a promo by Drew Galloway and his new friends or by Taryn Terrell would have helped bridge things between last week and next week in those stories.
In the ring, things were pretty good this week, but the finish to Lashley vs. Angle killed things for me. Why can’t we just have a clean finish?
