OPENING SEGMENT- Did not like it.
The Usos says that they went to the Authority and asked for this open challenge tag title shot. That was about the only good thing. I’m really not liking “Uso crazy” as a catchphrase. It both sounds silly, doesn’t work with them (thy just do flying crossbodies- they don’t come across as daredevils like the Hardys or as someone doing something unique like JoMo often did), and it also sounds like they are ripping off EY.
More plugs for the Network. The people chanted “$9.99.” I hope future audiences do not pick this chant up.
The Usos then asked for anyone who wanted to accept the open challenge came out. It was… Rybaxel. Don’t get me wrong, I think they’re a great heel act… but they’ve been jobbers for month’s now. Even during their entrance, we were reminded that they couldn’t take out Roman Reigns two-on-one. I’m not saying them getting a title shot doesn’t make sense because this is an open challenge, but it certainly doesn’t have me excited the way that… well… ANY OTHER MATCH-UP WOULD!
Ryback insisted that “playtime’s over, and so are we.” I howled with laughter. Then RVD came out and said that he would like to challenge for the tag titles. Ryback told him he was a “Van Dummy” because he was only one man and not a tag team. He also called RVD a singlet-stealing feed-me-more.” I didn’t realize that “feed-me-more” was a noun, but the “singlet-stealing” line made laugh.
Rob feigned as if he had forgotten that he needed a tag team partner to go after the tag team titles, but then revealed that in fact he did not forget, and brought out his tag team partner: Sheamus. I should have been excited at the prospect of this new team, but the set-up of the segment really took me out of it. It was like they were setting up for this big dramatic reveal in a situation in which it made absolutely no sense for there to be one.
We then got a short shoving match, which was interrupted by Kane coming out and making it a triple threat match. Then they played Kane’s music and ended the segment, but it really seemed like something got edited out. Maybe Kane had more to say that didn’t make TV.
Wait… this isn’t happening now? Isn’t that how open challenges normally work?
SETH ROLLINS vs. KOFI KINGSTON- 7.5/10
RENEE YOUNG INTERVIEWS RVD & SHEAMUS- complete and total waste of time. Just give Rollins and Kofi more time.
That being said, though, I do like the idea of RVD going after a title simply for the reason that he wants one. Repetitiveness has been a big problem in the tag team division (which seemed absurd to say eight months ago when it seemed to be getting hot), and so having Rob team with someone to chase the tag titles, would get the Usos over, give Rob (and his partner) something constructive to do, and would buy time to build up future challengers for the Usos.
WWE TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: The Usos(c) vs. Curtis Axel & Ryback vs. Rob Van Dam & Sheamus- 7/10
They told a great story with the blind tags, and had a lot of good action.
A GREAT episode of Main Event. THIS is what WWE should be doing with Main Event every week. A great match in which they put over someone who they want to keep strong and an important match (as opposed to the standard short matches that don’t matter at all). They need to turn it into something that will draw people to the WWE Network instead of treating it like an afterthought like they have been doing (with both Main Event and Superstars).
