NWK Reviews Payback 2014

Post by NWK2000 » Jun 1st, '14, 23:52

We get the opening video package and it's the scary old lady from the Taker/Lesnar package. Why does everyone think the broken glass motif is a good theme. Although the package does end on a cool note with Bray glaring into the camera.

Sheamus vs Cesaro w/Paul Heyman for the US Title
-I'm super glad this is opening, I think this one will steal the show.
-Already we see a "Push Curt Hawkins" sign and a "What about me? What about Raven?" sign. Maybe it's just the Saint Louisan in me, but I fucking hate Chicago crowds.
-Paul Heyman actually turns CM Punk chants into a way to rip the Blackhawks, and then plug Brock Lesnar, brilliant
-Wow, immediate signature combo by Sheamus, and countered by Cesaro
-Lots of unexpected use of signature moves
-Oooh a small package finish, this doesn't hinder Cesaro's push.

6.75/10 would've been a 6 if not for the finish.

Rybaxel vs Rhodes Bros
Goldust plays a good babyface in peril
-Cody comes and messed up a moonsault, I wouldn't be surprised if he tweeks something.
-I think that's the first time I've seen a guy get powerbombed into another guy.
-Man, talk about a false finish, that was literally 2 and 7/8ths
-YES, Rybaxel won. I wish Goldust woud've taken the pin though
6/10

Oh, now this is interesting, Cody being sad instead of pissed about the loss. Forget what I said about Goldust taking the pin.

HOORAY RUSEV TIME
Lana comes out and, as only she can, gets legit heat. They're now announcing Rusev in Kilos, this is fucking amazing.
Rusev w/ Lana vs. Big E
I like the double body block colision, and them trading punches as well.
-DAMN, Big E does a Joe corner urinagi
-That out-of-ring spear makes me pop every time.
-FUCK Rusev kicks are ridiculous
6.5/10 this is how squashes should be done

Apparently Kofi vs Bo is happening. That's what I get for not watching the pre-show before the review.
Kofi Kingston vs Bo Dallas
-Jerry Lawler class bullshit on Bo being on PPV, good
-Did Bo Dallas just Tebow? I love this man
-Kofi's face after Bo's promo was amazing
-zOh...okay Kane's here.
-Kane murders Kofi while Bo runs like a chickenshit,
-Bo comes in and tells a murdered Kofi he'll be fine if he Bolieves
-Apparently Kofi is anti-Authority and that's why he was murdered, thanks for that Cole.

RVD vs Bad News Barrett for the IC Title
As usual, Bad News cuts a great pre-match promo.
-JBL justifies people cheering for Bad News, because people like Bad News, it's why they watch the news, brilliant
- Ooooh, that sequence with the ring posst and stuff made it suspenseful
7/10

Daniel Bryan video package, and now here comes Steph. She narrates the stakes like the DBZ announcer. They come out, she brings in the Bryan's non existant "weird, bearded" baby and says they need to do the right thing. BRIE QUITS! AWESOME! THIS MAKES BRIE LOOK LIKE AN UBER BABYFACE.

John Cena vs Bray Wyatt. Last man Standing
I know Cena wins this (special thanks to Sassafrass for spoiling it), but I really don't think this will hurt Bray's character, he's way too over.
-What is it that Cena's caring around. An infant's shirt? A napkin?
-Huh, the Usos backing up Cena, I dig it.
--Cena looks like an underdog early, dig it
-AA early
-WOAH, CRABWALK
-Did Uso just do a 630 senton?
-This is one of the quicker LMS matches I've ever seen
-Why did Cena have to tease using the chair? As Cole said, it's well with in the rules of the match
-Bry posing on top of the steps was great.
-Jesus, brutal headstomp.
-AHHH Royal Rumble 2007 chair throw spot
-Bray caught Cena in a dive for the Sister Abigail
-OH SHIT, that Senton
-Umaga hip bump through the table, how appropriate
-Superplex through the table
-Crowd brawl
-I dig the finish, it gives Bray a chance for rebutal and wasn't necessarily a sign of his own weakness that he was fefeated.
8.5/10, on par with Punk/Cena and Umaga/Cena as Cena's best match.

Alicia Fox vs Paige for the Diva's Title
Crazy Alicia Fox is amazing
-Oh hey a straightjacket hold, awesome
-Pretty great, I hope Alicia/Paige is a feud that goes for a while.
4.5/10
Evolution vs The Shield Elimination match
Too much to actually call here.
8.5/10 great match
Great PPV overall, although I don't know if I would've put the time in if not for the WWE Network.

Am I the only person who thinks this Alicia Fox stuff is garbage? Creative has nothing so they have he go out and do R Truths gimmick from 2011 but with stupid random crap instead of hilarious Mic work.

Also, I'm surprised you ranked the IC match higher than the US match. I thought Sheamus v. Cesaro was better

The first time it was good. Once they had her start going on for like two minutes and doing sh*t like giving wedgies and stealing wallets it got bad. The real crime here is if they just let her cut promos, she would be the hottest heel the Divas Division has seen in a long time because she is that good on the mic.

that's creative when it comes to the Divas, you want to make a heel diva, make her crazy and do 'abnormal' things. She's a former champ, that should be enough story to have them feud...

also, after reading yours and BRMs reviews, am i the only one that marked out for the flying set of steel steps?

I didn't think it was THAT crazy. We've seen flying chairs to the face, which seems a lot scarier and more dangerous to me.

I love the flying steps spot, mostly because it ties into Cena's Royal Rumble 2007 match, which BRM and I agree is one of his best matches. I really did like this match, especially the pacing. And the reason why I didn't rate the Cesaro/Sheamus match as high was because I firmly had in my head the Sheamus/Barrett match from Raw a month ago and was holding it to that.

I went nuts for the flying stairs that was crazy. They constantly put over how heavy those stairs are: flying chairs don't even compare, BRM. those stairs are 45lbs! I thought that was gonna be the end of the match!

Chairs go faster and seem harder. That's how it always seemed to me (or maybe Sabu was just really good throwing chairs).

It's mainly just bc of how heavy the stairs seem to be and it was always a teased spot that was spose to make it seem like a guy was REALLY trying to take his opponent out. I'd never seen it done before and Bray sold it perfectly

this! i even remembered the Umaga/Cena one when i saw this, but this was just a longer, faster throw, and Bray just took it all in
