BRM Reviews the 8/2/2012 Impact

Post by Big Red Machine » Aug 3rd, '12, 00:53

Going into this show, I was pretty sure that this was the go-home show for Hardcore Justice. The internet has just informed me that the PPV is actually next weekend. How is it that TNA has not even mentioned the date of their next PPV on the air in three shows?!

ZEMA ION & BOBBY ROODE vs. AUSTIN ARIES & KENNY KING- 6.25/10
I liked them brawling out from the back to start off the show. The right guy definitely got the pin here.

THE INTERVIEWERS TALKS TO STING ON HIS WAY TO THE RING- WTF? In the week since these accusations have been made, Sting has not asked James Storm about Aces & Eights? This is the sort of thing that I cannot stand about TNA. They make it seem like the company only exists during the two hours that Impact is on the air.

STING, JAMES STORM, & KURT ANGLE SEGMENT- HORRIBLE!
Sting asks Storm to come out and wants Storm to convince him that he isn’t behind Aces & Eights. Storm says that he can’t be behind Aces & Eights because he fights his own battles. Then he hints that Kurt Angle is behind Aces & Eights because Kurt jumped him from behind once. Then Kurt comes out and this gets even worse. Kurt asks who benefits from Aces & Eights attacking him before his match with James Storm? Well… everyone in the BFG Series benefits from it (aside from Kurt). Then Kurt points out that Aces & Eights attacked AJ, but not Storm. What Kurt doesn’t do is ask “who benefits from this?” because the answer would be “NOT JAMES STORM because Storm should have gotten DQed and lost a bunch of points! Then Kurt points to Aces & Eights running away from Storm at the end of the show (basically, he recaps everything that Sting had just said). Then they do some lame hype for their match tonight, and Sting says that he will be at ringside. Then the segment ends with nothing about added to the debate of Storm’s guilt or innocence , despite Sting having said that he was coming out here to get to the bottom of this and demanding that Storm convince him of his innocence.

BFG SERIES MATCHES FOR HARDCORE JUSTICE- a bunch of gimmick matches for no reason.

BOUND FOR GLORY SERIES MATCH: Bully Ray vs. Robbie E. (w/Rob Terry)- no rating.
Good for what it was.

GAIL & MADISON BACKSTAGE- good

#1 CONTENDERSHIP MATCH: Madison Rayne vs. Gail Kim vs. Tara vs. Mickie James- 5.5/10
Earl Hebner and Madison Rayne made out in the ring two weeks ago. Last week, Madison won a match because of a questionable call on Hebner’s part. WHICH IDIOT THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA FOR HEBNER TO REFEREE THIS MATCH?!

They showed the wrong angle on the replay. The normal camera angle clearly showed that Tara’s shoulder was up… so why did they sow a replay that didn’t show Tara’s shoulders.

BROOKE HOGAN & STING BACKSTAGE- Bad No one cares about Brooke Hogan’s character, and she came off as a drama queen here. “Why are they picking on us?” What is this? High school?

EY & ODB- Brooke Hogan has a problem that one half of the Knockouts’ Tag Team Champions has a Y chromosome. Why hasn’t she done something about this before now? She has been in charge for two months now, and EY and & ODB have been the champs the entire time.

CHAVO GUERRERO JR. (w/Hernandez) vs. KID KASH (w/Gunner)- 5.25/10
They really should have given Chavo a lot more time to show what he could do. If you want to prove that WWE missed the ball on this guy, don’t give him a six minute match.

DIXIE CARTER SAYS THAT “IT IS WELL PAST TIME FOR AJ TO STEP UP AND SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT”- ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME? This is coming from the woman who WENT SIX WEEKS LETTING THE ENTIRE WORLD… INCLDUING HER HUSBAND… THINK SHE WAS HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH AJ, GOING AS FAR AS TO LET HER HUSBAND PUNCH AJ IN THE FACE… and she says that AJ needs to step up and set the record straight about this? The sheer amount of chutzpah that it takes to make a statement like that…

DEVON & GARRETT OFFER TO PROTECT KURT FROM ACES & EIGHTS TONIGHT- Crap. And here is why: Devon mentioned that he and Garrett had offered to protect Sting a few weeks ago. What Devon neglected to mention is that HE AND GARRETT DIDN’T MAKE GOOD ON THEIR OFFER TO PROTECT STING, AS WHEN ACES & EIGHTS WERE BEATING STING UP, THEY WERE NOWHERE TO BE FOUND!

KAZ & DANIELS THROW A BABY SHOWER FOR CLAIRE- UTTER SH*T!
This was boring and stupid, and Claire’s acting was horrific. This is also the sort of thing that bothers me from a kayfabe point of view: why the hell would anyone in TNA management give them TV time for this?

BOUND FOR GLORY SERIES MATCH: James Storm vs. Kurt Angle- 6.5/10
Not good enough for a main event.

ACES & EIGHTS DON’T SHOW UP- I actually liked this a lot. They don’t have to show up every week for their “presence” to be felt.

SHOW-ENDING SCRUM- bad. This just felt so forced, and Storm forgot to sell his leg.

Overall, Impact was good in the ring, but stunk out of the ring.

STUPID ANNOUNCER QUOTES:
1. Tenay calls Tara Miss Tessmacher’s “long-time tag team partner.” IT HASN’T EVEN BEEN A YEAR!

how is this any different from CM Punk not saying anything about attacking the rock two weeks ago? no one confronted him either during that week, it was only noted that Punk would address the fans on the same morning of the show. Or how much stalling we've had with the Lesnar/Triple H angle, we're talking legal business going on here, yet they take months to answer each other.

It's BFG series matches, they don't really need to have a reason to happen other than get them out of the way and give points to who wins them.

Maybe there wasn't anything else relevant enough to show. this is the same thing you should be asking yourself everytime we get a stupid segment on WWE. or any promotion for that matter.

Because Punk didn't say "I am going to explain why I attacked The Rock... and then proceed to not explain it. Furthermore, many people asked Punk about it... he just didn't respond. We haven't seen any of that with Storm and Sting here.
With Triple H-Lesnar, the stalling has been for an announcement of the wrestling match. I assume that Paul E's kayfabe lawsuits are rolling along at the normal pace.

Yeah, but why are they gimmick matches? If I remember correctly, they said that this year, everyone would face everyone once. TNA has every PPV, Impact, and house show until No Surrender to do that. his not only throws that out of alignment (let's be honest... the guys in the match with Robbie E will probably have a much easier time winning than anyone in the AJ vs. Joe vs. Angle vs. Daniels match), and stops everyone from having the same match-types, which is something that needs to happen in an official tournament like this.
Furthermore, this is just lazy booking. There are no real stories in year's BFG Series. BFG Series matches on PPV should be either matches with storyline implications/bad blood (like the AJ vs. Kaz match should be on PPV), or just HUGE match ups (like Joe vs. Angle was). This is just TNA throwing gimmick matches together purely for the sake of having gimmick matches.

How can there not be something else relevant enough? It's a wrestling show! If you have time to fill... sign a wrestling match!

The difference between this and WWE is that in WWE, there is usually a reason that something like this would be given TV time. Either the authority figure wants it or the champ could have used his stroke to demand it (like Roode di with his Celebration of Domination a few months ago). Here we have a non-wrestling related segment (this isn't a match or someone coming out to cut a promo) put on by two guys who the authority figures thing are assholes, intended to embarrass a guy whom the authority figures all genuinely like. If we still had a heel authority figure, I would be fine with this.

I don't remember Sting saying anything last week either about asking Storm. and who asked Punk? cuz Twitter doesn't count, and at least WWE had several outlets to ask Punk, yet they didn't. TNA had to wait til next week.

i don't think the authority figure (unless you're dixie or vince) has power to say what gets shown on tv when it comes to things that are backstage segments, interviews, or such. Sting won't go around saying "hey, show that Parks is talking to Garrett, that's gonna be awesome". The show producer decides that, and he may find this thing going on with Daniels and Kaz as relevant to show, as relevant as showing Cena and Ryder talk backstage, or showing Santino investigate who the GM was, or showing the PRIVATE Daniel Bryan interrogation last monday.

Sting said to the cameraman on his way to the ring that he hadn't talked to Storm yet.
The difference between this and Punk is that Punk attacking The Rock is (for lack of a better term) perfectly okay in the world of wrestling. People blindside others all the time. There would be no real reason for WWE management to want to look into it. With Storm, on the other hand, we have someone who might be conspiring with outside accomplices to assault a whole bunch of wrestlers and authority figures. This is something that TNA Wrestling LLC, the kayfabe entity, should be looking into immediately.

There is a difference between a roaming camera segment (like the one earlier of Kaz and Daniels in the lockerroom, or any other segment where the camera happens upon people talking backstage) and a segment that takes place in the ring. In-ring segment are controlled by the person putting the card together, which, in kayfabe, are the authority figures. They are the ones booking the show (in the kayfabe sense of the word). Do you really think that Sting, Hogan, or especially Dixie would let them not only waste time like this, but do so in a segment clearly designed to humiliate AJ?

1. The point of the gimmick matches is obviously to push the gimmick of the ppv: HARDCORE Justice.

2. BRM, did you not see the segment with Sting and Joseph Park? I thought you'd have shit a brick on that one, lol....

Just saw the Sting & Joseph Park segment now. Aside from them using the word kayfabe, I thought that this segment was absolutely AMAZING! It gives us a logical explanation for why Joseph Park is still around and also furthers his story a bit.

I thought the mentioning of kayfabe would have ruined it for you completely, lol.

I find it funny that JP's firm is called Park, Park, & Park; is Abyss ALSO a lawyer? =))
