What Is Currently the Divas Division's Biggest Problem?

The WWE Divas division has a laundry list of problems that would literally take hours to fully dissect.

The Divas only get two minutes of TV time per week, there is a lack of talent in the division, the company signs models instead of Divas, it suffers from bad booking and so on and so forth.

But here’s what I think is the biggest problem that the Divas division has: The WWE’s two most clearly defined female characters hardly ever step into the ring.

When you look at the Divas roster, it’s full of cookie-cutter Divas who do virtually nothing to stand out from the pack. Even the two most talented Divas in the company—Beth Phoenix and Natalya—are booked so badly that nothing really separates them from the rest, either.

There are two Divas who actually have characters, however. The thing is, they’re characters first and wrestlers second.

I’m talking, of course, about AJ and Eve Torres.

Eve has stepped into a role as John Laurinaitis’ Executive Administrator, while AJ is caught in the middle of what appears to be a love triangle between CM Punk and Daniel Bryan.

They are on TV (both Raw and SmackDown) far more than any other Diva, and that includes the Divas Champion, Layla.

In turn, this has given them actual characters that people can identify with: Eve is the slutty secretary type (sorry for the porn reference) while AJ is, as Punk’s new T-shirt says, the “crazy chick.”

These may not be the greatest two female characters in WWE history, but—guess what?—at least they’re actually characters who have storylines and serve some sort of purpose on TV.

And I like it. I like that Eve and AJ have a sense of direction, and that they’re more than just the smiling, happy-go-lucky Diva like Kelly Kelly or Alicia Fox.

Is the Divas division's biggest problem its lack of female characters?

Unfortunately, though, Eve has all but hung up her wrestling boots for the time being, and AJ’s matches are few and far between.

See the problem there?

The problem is not that AJ and Eve actually have gimmicks. It’s that those gimmicks have absolutely nothing to do with the Divas division.

Wouldn’t you think that given Eve’s position of power, she would use that to her advantage by giving herself a Divas title shot or something along those lines?

Wouldn’t you think that AJ’s crazy-chick routine would result in her consistently having matches in which she—well, goes crazy?

But no. Instead of using the most distinguishable female characters in the WWE to, you know, actually build up the Divas division, Eve and AJ are primarily used elsewhere.

Don’t get me wrong—I’m not saying that they shouldn’t be involved in other storylines at all.

But if creative is going to put them on TV so much and give them so much more exposure than any other Divas, then the WWE might as well capitalize on that by using them to revitalize the Divas division.

Women’s wrestling in the WWE would be so much better if we had more clearly defined characters like AJ and Eve Torres rather than the dime-a-dozen Divas who do nothing whatsoever to stand out.

This is what’s wrong with creative: They’re building up two Divas characters very well, but they’re not using them to their full advantage.

That’s a shame, because unlike most of the Divas, at least AJ and Eve are somewhat interesting.

I stopped reading at this point. All of AJ's matches since the gimmick began have gone like this. Also, the AJ-Dragon-Punk thing only seems to be a love triangle if are severely lacking in knowledge of geometry.

i think the problem is the lack of matches, and not that she doesn't go crazy.

She was only crazy for a few weeks and had at least three matches where she went nuts. And that is the sort of thing that you can't do too many times or else it get repetitive. They found a good balance.

This. But at the same time i have to agree that if AJ is probably the best diva gimmick out there right now, it would have been good to build up a little diva exposure with her.
