Doink the Clown will forever be the stereotype of a bad gimmick. The stereotype of bad early 90's wrestling that was Cartoony and over the top. The period before the Attitude Era where Vince had run out of ideas. The period that brought us Wrestlemania 9 #-o . While the gimmick is revived now and again for nostalgia purposes, he's always brought in as a face, but it wasn't supposed to be this way.
Many people dawned the paint and polka dots over the years, but the ORIGINAL Doink (as most of you probably already know) was 'Maniac' Matt Borne (Big Josh in WCW).
Borne had always carried a rugged persona, but was as technically sound as Brett Hart. The gimmick was supposed to be that of a traditional looking clown (a common phobia) with multiple personalities. A sadistic clown who was unstoppable in the ring, and Borne knocked it out of the park. I have no idea why they turned him face, because he was awesome. Maybe Vince saw more money in catering to the kids. Maybe too many people were turned off by it. Maybe it was ahead of it's time.
I remember his feud with Crush, i love how it was only about making some pranks on wrestlers until someone confronted him...so doink attacked him with a hammer.
Doink was great; his antics were just down right classic. At WM9 when the doppleganger Doink attacked Crush with a fake arm; then the two Doinks did the whole mirror-mime thing =))
