A new championship could soon be coming to NXT.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that as of right now WWE is planning to introduce NXT Women's Tag Team titles.
The WWE Women's Tag Team titles can currently be defended on Raw, SmackDown, and NXT. On this week's NXT episode, Women's Tag Team Champions Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler retained their titles against Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez following interference by WWE authority figure Adam Pearce. After there was a ref bump during the match, Pearce brought out a Raw referee. Despite Kai not being the legal person, the Raw referee called for the bell when she passed out in Baszler's Kirifuda Clutch.
There was a segment where Pearce and NXT general manager William Regal were shown exchanging words after Pearce got involved in the Women's Tag Team title match. Regal was interviewed later in the show and said he'll be making an announcement that will "change the landscape of NXT" next week.
Baszler & Jax vs. Kai & Gonzalez was just the third Women's Tag Team title match that's taken place on NXT since the championship was first introduced in 2019. Kai & Gonzalez got their title shot by winning the inaugural women's Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

This is a mistake, just because you could do something, doesn’t mean you should do something.
There is no need and not enough established women’s teams in NXT to warrant this.
Build the division, bring in the titles.

Agreed. I think this is more of a "Hunter trying to show up Vince" kind of thing like we saw with the Cruiserweight Title, or with people who have come back down to NXT like Ember Moon and Breezango.

Probably! Becase is a at this point Kai/Gonzalez, Moon/Blackheart and LaRae/Hartwell are your only options.Big Red Machine wrote: ↑Mar 6th, '21, 16:47Agreed. They’re not exactly Hardyz, Dudleyz and E&C, it won’t keep the interest.

I think Tegan Nox had found a tag partner before her latest injury, plus you have Team KC and the Robert Stone Brand to make up the undercard.XIV wrote: ↑Mar 7th, '21, 00:20Probably! If they put effort into it and create teams, they can make it work.

But they’re still doing it backwards. Have some great women’s tag teams first, then bring the belts in.Big Red Machine wrote: ↑Mar 7th, '21, 01:49I think Tegan Nox had found a tag partner before her latest injury, plus you have Team KC and the Robert Stone Brand to make up the undercard.XIV wrote: ↑Mar 7th, '21, 00:20Probably! I agree that it's backwards, but at least there is a sensible storyline reason for the titles to come before the teams (and, of course, you can then tell stories about the various teams forming).XIV wrote: ↑Mar 7th, '21, 02:13But they’re still doing it backwards. Re: WWE NXT planning to introduce new championship
The story for it is great, having Adam Cole protecting his interests and William Regal in-turn protecting his by using his powers effectively and I do hope that this encourages a bunch of women to team up and some good stories to come out of it!Big Red Machine wrote: ↑Mar 7th, '21, 20:08I agree that it's backwards, but at least there is a sensible storyline reason for the titles to come before the teams (and, of course, you can then tell stories about the various teams forming).XIV wrote: ↑Mar 7th, '21, 02:13But they’re still doing it backwards. Re: WWE NXT planning to introduce new championship
I disagree with the idea that Pearce is "protecting his interests," as he would have use of the champs no matter who they are. It's a big flaw in the story (unless it comes out that he has some other reason he wants to see Jax and Baszler as champs), but at least the concept of introducing the titles before there is a division now makes sense.XIV wrote: ↑Mar 8th, '21, 00:03The story for it is great, having Adam Cole protecting his interests and William Regal in-turn protecting his by using his powers effectively and I do hope that this encourages a bunch of women to team up and some good stories to come out of it!Big Red Machine wrote: ↑Mar 7th, '21, 20:08I agree that it's backwards, but at least there is a sensible storyline reason for the titles to come before the teams (and, of course, you can then tell stories about the various teams forming).
