ROH 7th Anniversary Show (3/21/2009)- New York, NY
BOBBY DEMPSEY PROMO- wow. This was actually pretty awesome.
KENNY KING & RHETT TITUS vs. RODERICK STRONG & ERICK STEVENS- 5/10
Standard match, standard story, standard action.
BRENT ALBRIGHT vs. CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI- 6.5/10
Good aftermath, too, which did a great job of escalating this feud to the next level
SEGMENT WITH ADAM PEARCE & GEORGE OLIPHANT- DUD!
There is a tried and true booking tactic which gets quick heat on a heel by having him or her push around a popular local celebrity. This is exactly the sort of thing that would fit in PERFECTLY with a guy like Adam Pearce who’s gimmick is an updated version of a classic old-school heel. Can you image the sort of heat that a bully like Adam Pearce would get pushing around a popular New York celebrity like Derek Jeter? Seems pretty fool-proof, doesn’t it?
ROH kind of goofed a bit here, as, inn stead of a popular local celebrity… we got a local nobody who happens to have a TV show. This guy got “WHO ARE YOU?” chants the whole time he was out there, and, as wrestling crowds tend to do when they don’t want to see an outside celebrity, they boo him. The crowd popped when Pearce came out and started pushing this guy around, and they popped even harder when Pearce asked him if he had ever heard of John Stossel.
BOBBY DEMPSEY vs. ADAM PEARCE (w/Shane Hagadorn & Sara Del Rey)- squash
JERRY LYNN vs. MIKE QAUCKENBUSH- 6/10.
Disappointingly short, considering the talent involved, but it will always hold a special place in my heart as it was mu first exposure to Mike Quackenbush, and the only time I have ever seen him live.
REVOLUTION RULES MATCH: Tyler Black, The Necro Butcher, & Delirious (w/Daizee Haze) vs. Austin Aries & The Age Of The Fall (Jimmy Jacobs & Brodie Lee)- 6/10
The Necro & Brocide elimination was handled very poorly. If they had just called it a double-count-out it would have been fine, but what they called it was just plain awkward. The whole match felt very awkward. Every so often a promotion will come up with a new gimmick match at that match will fail. This was one of those times.
JAY BRISCOE PROMO- decent
PRINCE NANA PROMO- hilarious! Nana (who had been in an angle where had lost all of his money) claims to have regained it because of Obama’s stimulus package (while, in classic Prince Nana fashion, mispronounces Obama’s name). Nana then introduces Bison Smith’s mystery partner… the returning JIMMY RAVE!
BRYAN DANIELSON & COLT CABANA vs. JIMMY RAVE & BISON SMITH (w/the Embassy)- 6.75/10
The finish was disappointing, but Cabana’s return was absolutely magical (not as magical as it was live, but you do manage to get a sense of it on the DVD). Cabana, Dragon, and the fans signing The Final Countdown while Dragon tried to do his entrance pose and Cabana goofed off was a perfect sendoff for the old themes (which ROH had recently stopped using because of the TV show).
D’LO BROWN PROMO- great
D’LO BROWN vs. JAY BRISCOE (w/Mark Briscoe)- 6.5/10.
I was actually pretty devastated by D’Lo’s heel turn here. I was also disappointed that the various shouts of “WE ARE THE NATION! OF DOMINATION!” cheers that were going on throughout the match were not heard on the DVD. I wasn’t thrilled with the finish, but I guess that they wanted a heel finish here. I didn’t think it was needed because D’Lo had turned heel in this match, so he could get a clean win and it would still be tainted.
NO DISQUALIFICATION MATCH FOR THE ROH WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES: Kevin Steen & El Generico(c) vs. The American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) (w/Sara Del Rey & Shane Hagadorn)- 8.75/10
You could really feel the hate and the violence here. A great story too, with the Wolves just trying to destroy Steen’s knees.
AFTERMATH- AWESOME!
ROH WORLD TITLE MATCH: Nigel McGuinness(c) vs. KENTA- 8.5/10
I hated Nigel doing fighting spirit after the Go To Sleep. Otherwise, this was an awesome match.
Overall, this show was an awesome show. Even on DVD, it was tons of fun to sit through, but, as clichéd as it sounds, watching on DVD wasn’t even close to being there live.
