Thelone Reviews MLW Fusion Episode 71

Post by Thelone » Aug 20th, '19, 09:30

We're with Warner to start the show and he goes crazy with his chainsaw talking about SDR and Martinez.

Short rundown with Aries vs. Austin being the only new match.

SDR is in the ring to introduce Martinez, which leads to...

Ricky Martinez (w/ Salina de la Renta) vs. Mance Warner - **1/2
Match went barely above two minutes with Mancer beating Martinez with his finisher.

Post-match, Warner starts celebrating with a beer, but SDR slaps and spits on him. He's trying to spit some beer on her, but she ducks and Martinez is sprayed with beer, then clocked with the can.

Holliday is in his penthouse in Las Vegas and says nothing important.

Apparently, Vega being shit taking Hammerstone's finisher horribly is now an angle where they'll try to ban it for being too dangerous. Better try to salvage something from this fiasco I suppose.

We see Marshall Von Erich being misted by Kwon, then a quick video update where he says that he hasn't fully recovered yet, but will be there to help his brother and Lawlor beat Contra in the War Chamber. Also his father will be there for support.

Backstage, Konnan is being an ass to SDR.

We see the Hart Foundation rant about Dynasty, then Pillman pisses on Hammerstone's jacket.

Ace Austin vs. Austin Aries - ***
At one point, Austin tries to cheat with his retractable cane like he did with Air Wolf a few weeks ago, but Aries saw through it and threw the cane away. Austin still managed to hit Aries with a low blow for a nearfall, then Aries just did the brainbuster for the win.

Post-match, Aries challenges Hart for his middleweight title.

We see the Dynasty coming to the arena "earlier" with Hammerstone being mad about Pillman stealing his jacket, but here comes Blake with said jacket and Hammerstone says it smell like cat piss and throws it away, then all three bitch about the Foundation.

Douglas James will debut in Dallas in two weeks.

Another control center for War Chamber.

Jimmy Havoc vs. LA Park - **1/2
It's a street fight because of course it is. It's another Havoc garbage match. It wasn't bad or anything, just the usual. Park won with a spear through a bunch of chairs.

We'll have Teddy vs. MJF next week for the middleweight title.

Post-match, here's Salina who demands that Park shakes Havoc's hand, then she says that Konnan's MINDGAMES won't work against her and she's not afraid of him, or Warner, or even the world champion. Warner's music hits, but he comes out from the crowd with his chainsaw and scares Promociones Dorado away.

It was better than last week, but War Chamber is only three weeks away (well, two and a half) and the build has been very light. Right now, Dorado vs. Konnan/Warner and Dynasty vs. Foundation feel like bigger deals than Contra vs. Lawlor/Von Erichs/X (they haven't done anything with that mystery partner either). Frankly, Dynasty vs. Hart Foundation would be a better fit for the not-Wargames match with some kind of stipulation attached to it (winners get all the belts on the line, losers have to disband/can't challenge for the winners' titles as long as they have it).

They really extended the whole eye injury too much in my opinion, but i understand they want to keep the final partner (has to be low ki, right?) for the end. They should really be pushing down the 'numbers disadvantage' story down our throats by now, have Lawlor bring in some geek as a partner only to get destroyed too, making the Von Erich return bigger and the fourth's reveal a big deal too.

As for the Hart Foundation vs Dynasty War Games. Totally agree, and I really wouldn't mind seeing Aries and the Dynasty cross paths for that one.

The misting angle has been fine and frankly, the only noteworthy thing Contra has done since Kings of Colosseum, which is the issue unfortunately. They were running wild before Fatu won the belt, the announcers sold the title change big like it was the beginning of the end, and then... Contra didn't even appear the week after (so much for "they have the "power" now"), did two lame brawls and then only the misting angle/Kwon debut. It doesn't help that Lawlor and the Von Erichs aren't exactly the most engaging characters on the show and the War Chamber match feels completely hollow. Also yes, Ki will most likely be the mystery partner, but I wouldn't be surprised if they bring back Ace Romero though.
