CMLL held a press conference to announce the return of the International Gran Prix. It will take place on July 1st, a Friday one month from today. They were only able to announce the Mexico team today: Volador Jr., Diamante Azul, Shocker, Rey Escorpión, Mephisto, Ultimo Guerrero, Máximo Sexy and Rush. CMLL initially said the international team would be announced some future day, but aired a video announcing them to close the press conference: Sam Elias (American Sweetness on DTU shows, from the US), Johnny Idol (from New Zealand, in DTU since January), Tama Tonga, Tanga Roa, Michael Elgin, Kushida (all four from NJPW), Okumura and Marco Corleone.
Tama is a former tag team CMLL champion; he and Terrible beat Atlantis & Diamante Azul, who may win the titles back on Sunday. Tonga is IWGP tag teams with his brother Tanga Roa, who was Camacho in WWE and Micah in TNA for a half a minute. Kushida was in Mexico in 2008 and 2009, but on indie and IWRG shows; this will be his debut in Arena Mexico. (Hopefully he’ll get to do more than this cibernetico.) Michael Elgin is debuting in Mexico; he’s in as a NJPW rep, and there’s still no deal between CMLL & ROH despite this being the obvious place to use them.
The rest of the press conference was more catching the media up to speed rather than reveal new news. Caristico & Mephisto talked about their impending title match in Puebla. Rey Cometa & Cavernario talked about possibly having a hair match, though Cavernario insisted on a title match first, and they didn’t have any idea when that would be. The annual Father’s Day will be on June 19th, a Sunday.
