BRM Reviews ROH Fate Of An Angel

Post by Big Red Machine » Dec 9th, '11, 01:51

ROH Fate Of An Angel (7/16/2005)- Woodbridge, CT

SAMOA JOE PROMO- Good

NIGEL MCGUINNESS vs. CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI- 6/10. Great opener.

AUSTIN ARIES vs. EL GENERICO- 7/10

FOUR CORNER SURVIVAL: Kevin Steen vs. Azrieal vs. Dixie vs. Homicide (w/Julius Smokes)- 6.25/10. Lots of action. Steen was very impressive.

CM PUNK & JAMES GIBSON SEGMENT- Great

ULTIMATE ENDURANCE MATCH FOR THE ROH TAG TEAM TITLES: The Carnage Crew(c) vs. Dunn & Marcos vs. The Embassy (Fast Eddie & Excess ) (w/Prince Nana & Jade Chung) vs. Lacey’s Angels (Cheech & Deranged) (w/Lacey)- 5.5/10. Really felt like a waste of a great stip, as the teams in here really made it feel like a throw-away defense. I did go absolutely nuts for the small package nearfall at the end of the match, though. In all honesty, this whole crappy short title reign should have gone to Dunn & Marcos rather than the Carnage Crew.

AJ STYLES vs. RODERICK STRONG- 8/10. Just plain awesome

GARY MICHAEL CAPETTA INTERVIEWS LACEY’S ANGELS- Good

ROH PURE TITLE MATCH: Samoa Joe(c) vs. Jimmy Rave (w/The Embassy)- 7.25/10

MATT HARDY PROMO- Someone is angry at WWE… and at three people in particular (Johnny Ace and two others, who I’m sure you all know who they are). Matt also put ROH over big.

MATT HARDY vs. CHRISTOPHER DANIELS (w/Allison Danger)- 8/10 Matt proves he can go in ROH.

ROH WORLD TITLE MATCH: CM Punk vs. James Gibson- 9/10. AWESOME!

AFTERMATH- GREAT booking.

NIGEL MCGUINNESS BACKSTAGE PROMO- good

DANIELS BACKSTAGE PROMO- DUD! Don’t get me wrong. This was a great promo… BUT IT MAKES NO SENSE IN THIS ANGLE! This would have been an awesome promo in an angle where Daniels was the heel and Punk was chasing him! But it makes no sense at all here! Daniels claims that Punk targeted him in the first place because, secretly, Punk is jealous of him. Of course, the real reason Punk went after Daniels was because Daniels ordered one of his henchmen to assault Punk’s girlfriend and injure her so badly she was forced to leave ROH. Watching this promo made me feel like I was in some alternate reality version of 2004 where Daniels had never left the company.

Overall, an AWESOME show from ROH with a must-see main event. Just make sure you shut it off after Nigel's promo. A must-buy for fans of CM Punk, James Gibson, and Matt Hardy

Stupid Announcer Quotes:
1. Gabe’s comments (as Jimmy Bower) about Matt coming to ROH so he could wrestle without “writers” telling him what to do broke kayfabe, IMO.

2. Prazak (after Matt countered the Angel’s Wings and the, immediately afterwards, Daniels countered a Twist of Fate, less than five minutes into the match) “It’s way too early for either of these men to go for their trademark maneuvers”- Why? Finishers, like any other move, hurt the other guy. In fact, finishers are finishers because they hurt the other guy even more than a regular move might. If you hit one five minutes in you aren’t going to get the pin, but you will hurt the other guy a lot, making it easier for you to beat him… which is the point of any move!

Okay, this is one of the few shows I've seen of ROH from that era (I've mainly seen 08 onwards stuff)...

Matt when he had his couple of ROH appearances was awesome. He was focused & showed that he can go as good as his brother & he had what it took in the indies still. Okay, mumbling about WWE was probably unnecessary as he capped it off by putting over ROH, which IMO is the only thing he should have done with this promo time.

Though indy fans dislike Liarnitis too, so it did have some effect.

....Oh and James Gibson was so much better than WWE allowed him to be.

I don't remember the Daniels promo though.... Perhaps my downloaded (don't shoot me for downloading) version didn't contain it as I don't remember the Nigel Promo either.
