Tetsuya Naito has released his first comments since his old friend SANADA left Los Ingobernables de Japon to join up with TAICHI in NJPW.

The former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion discussed this topic during a recent interview with the NJPW press, where he looked back on their time together in the group, which began back in 2016. Check out Naito’s full thoughts below.

On SANADA’s decision to leave LIJ:

In the quarterfinals of the New Japan Cup, I lost to SANADA. I didn’t feel much change, but his last move was very strong. Los Ingobernables de Japon is a unit that is difficult to get into, but easy to get out of. Because I don’t hold back anyone who wants to leave. SANADA decided to leave Los Ingobernables de Japon. You can do whatever you want. But I wonder about what SANADA said, ‘There’s no point in staying with Naito since I’ve already beaten him.’ Because he is going to join the unit of Taichi, whom he beat in the first round of the New Japan Cup, right? Naito, beat him, so he won’t fight with me anymore. He beats Taichi, but they will fight together from now on.

Says SANADA’s move was a bit contradictory:

Isn’t that a bit contradictory? If SANADA thinks that he can’t be the top fighter in the same unit as Naito, then he will be the third or fourth fighter from now on, right? Because, look at a guy named Shingo Takagi. Ever since he joined Los Ingobernables de Japon, he has been involved in the title fights. In my opinion, a person who can shine can shine no matter where he goes. Those who don’t shine, don’t shine anywhere. That’s what I think. Cabrón!

SANADA left LIJ earlier this week when he defeated Naito to advance in the New Japan Cup tournament.

I myself will add that's it was silly to have Sanada beat Naito clean, and then right after that leave LIJ because Naito is the top guy there.

While I obviously disagree that Tony is on the top of his game, I wanted to drop this here because I marked out for seeing Tony's booking sheet. This adds him to the (to my knowledge) small group of bookers who have actually let us see such a thing. I believe it's just him, Dusty, Gabe, and Cornette, although this is much more like the peak into the old barely legible notebook of Dusty's we saw in his ROH Secrets of the Ring than it is like Gabe or Cornette, who have let the camera spend a while focusing on pages on their binders (Corny in various shoots, Gabe in the Gabe's Book of ROH Secrets DVD).

I still had two years left on my contract when I left. I made the decision to leave. I still had two years left, I probably could have been there much longer. I re-signed at the end of 2021 and hindsight being what it is, I probably shouldn't have but again, AEW, I was there since before day one. I was there when this was a germ of an idea. I was there discussing this company when they didn't even have initials attached to it. In these rooms with Cody and the Bucks and Page and Sky and CD.

So again, I was committed, I want to try to ride this thing out.

It just became apparent to me that what I like and what I appreciate about pro wrestling and the way I like it presented was not happening at AEW and that's not an indictment at them. It's just what they perceive as good television wrestling and what I do are different things. And just the business model, everything. Again, it was one of those things, I feel that I have so much more to offer than what I was being utilized for at AEW. So I bet on myself and I made the decision to walk away and I'm very thankful I did. It's by far the best decision I could have made.

Interesting that he is putting SCU in there as guys who were part of the talks for the "germ of the idea." Not sure I had heard that before. Also, slightly interesting that he left Omega out.

not saying he wasn't, but I think he may be overly overestimating what probably was Cody and the Bucks brainstorming about some idea, and SCU just happened to be there in the room and had some input.
