AEW Dynamite
October 2nd, 2019
Washington, D.C.

Show opens with some Pyro, lots of colors, Jay and Silent Bob front row. JR, Schiavone, and Excalibur are on commentary, who ran down the card for tonight.

Cody vs Guevara Promo - Pretty much what we've seen with the Road To episodes about Cody looking past Guevara.

"The American Nightmare" Cody w/Brandi Rhodes vs Sammy Guevara - 6.5/10
Cody as expected is really over with the crowd. Match had some mishaps early on, mostly with Guevara's positioning, and I can't blame him, he's the first match ever, all eyes on him.

First match pressures aside, one to stay on his route to a title match and the other to make a name, the story was that of the cocky young guy vs the cocky veteran. This was a lot of Cody hitting big moves, but not being able to put Sammy down. Sammy also had the athletic advantage, so he kept escaping a lot of Cody's moves.

At one point, Cody went for a Tope Suicida, but Guevara pulled Brandi on the way so Cody took her out. She was ok, but it gave Sammy the opening to take out Cody and get some momentum. Sammy kicked out of a Disaster Kick and a Reverse Superplex. Cody kicked out of a desperation Spanish Fly and countered a SSP with the knees up, which he used to roll Guevara for the pin.

Post-match - Tony Schiavone went to interview Cody, but Sammy wanted more. Except he just accepted his loss and shook Cody's hands. This distraction was the opening for Chris Jericho to enter the ring and attack Cody. Jericho hit a couple of Codebreakers and a belt shot. He trashed Cody. Jericho got mixed reactions until the fans Thanked Jericho.

MJF vs Brandon Cutler - Squash
MJF cut a promo on the way to the ramp, he said that the was the youngest and fastest rising star. He said that tonight, everyone gets to see star be born. He ran down Cutler for being a loser. MJF is gold on the mic.

Match was virtually a squash. Cutler did have a couple of hope spots, but after a botch that was hidden under 'hurting his knee after the Tope', MJF made him tap out immediately to a Fujiwara armbar. Botch was that Cutler went to the top rope and his leg got shaky and lost his footing, he immediately sold it as being hurt.

Chris Van Vliet Interview Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes - They promoted Jay and Silent Bob 2 and brought up that Jericho is in the movie. Angelico and Jack Evans interrupted the interview and I have finally confirmed that Evans and Mewes are not the same person. Private Party came out, brought drinks to Smith and Jason, running off Evans and Angelico. Security told PP to leave, they were not smarten up.

SCU Home Video - They're doing a White House shtick. It was just their catchphrases. Later on, they were interviewed on the ramp by Schiavone. They announced that Bad Influence are entering the tag team tournament.

Out came Pentagon and Fenix to interrupt. They did their shtick too, and a brawl broke out into a pull apart. Malenko and some referees broke them up.

"Hangman" Adam Page vs "The Bastard" PAC - 7/10
PAC stalled forever while commercials ran, which has to be better than just dimming the lights and waiting. Pretty good match, best so far. It was back and forward for the most part, they traded momentum here and there, with Page getting quick flurries of offense before PAC would cut him off. At the end, Page made a great comeback, even hitting a top rope Moonsault to the floor, but after Page accidentally ran PAC to the ref, PAC low blowed Page, hit the Black Arrow, and locked in the Brutalizer for the submission win.

Queue in whining fans because there was a low blow in the first show.

Dr. Britt Baker came down to join the commentary table for the following match.

AEW Women's Championship Inaugural Match
Nyla Rose vs Riho - 8/10
Obviously, this was the small vs big match up, speed vs strength, and arguably heart vs power. Early on, there was a beautiful spot where Riho went for a footstomp on the back of Rose, but Rose simply stood up, tossing Riho to the air. For a while, the match was that, Riho going all over the place, but once Rose caught her, Riho was done for.

Nyla at one point went for a chair, caught in the moment, but the ref took the chair away from her hands, actually saving her and us from a DQ. Later on, she brought out a bunch of chairs. She used the loophole that it's not a DQ to fall into sutff, and as she went for a Senton on Riho on top of the chairs, Riho moved and Rose landed backfirst into the pile of chairs. Riho followed with a foot stomp.

Back in the ring, it was again Riho trying to land as much offense and pins as possible, but Rose kept blocking and kicking out with strength alone. Rose hit the Draping Jumping Knee, but only got a two count. Crowd is completely behind Riho at this point. Nyla locked in a Crossface for a ton of heat, especially when Riho seemed to pass out. Rose went for a piledriver, with the idea that Riho would counter with an over the head toss, but Riho collapsed under the weight, which it's a botch that helped the drama.

Riho had a great near fall with a roll up. Riho got another near fall with a Superplex. Riho went all Nakamura with a couple of Bomayes, finally earning the pin and the championship. Awesome match. Really happy and good feels all around.

Everyone was on their feet for this match, this had the most heat of the show so far.

Note to Tony Khan, stop cutting to the crowd during pins.

Post-match - Michael Nakazawa, being the only one that can speak Japanese, was out there to interview Riho, but Nyla Rose attacked them both. Powerbombed Nakazawa and went to do the same on Riho, but Kenny Omega of all people came down for the save. He didn't attack Nyla, but broke up the fight. Big pop for Omega.

We got the Full Gear commercial.

The Elite (Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks) vs Chris Jericho, Santana, & Ortiz - 7/10
As someone who has been following Santana and Ortiz for the last years in Impact, seeing them become superstars, this match up against the Young Bucks is a dream match of sorts. I can't wait for the proper tag match. Their entrance song is not as awesome as their Impact's song, but still good. Also worth noting that Jericho's tron video is awesome.

Match started with The Elite getting control, but as soon as Omega went for the Terminator pose, Jon Moxley sneaked up behind them and they started brawling. They brawled to the back into the VIP area where Mox suplexed Omega into a glass table. Yes, it wasn't a DQ, they're killing the business. Terrible booking, they should close the promotion tonight.

Back in the ring, Bucks were in a disadvantage 2-to-3, so Matt Jackson got worked on for a while, allowing Santana and Ortiz to get a lot of offense in, you could tell by the reactions that these geeks in the stands don't watch Impact. Eventually, Matt made a small comeback and tagged in Nick, who was all over the place. With a sense or urgency, they went for an early Meltzer Driver, but Jericho caught Nick with a Codebreaker mid-air and a Judas Effect later on Matt sealed the deal.

Post-match - They beat up The Bucks until Cody came out to attack Jericho. Sammy Guevara came out and low blowed Cody. Dustin Rhodes came out and took out the bad guys, but Jake Hager debuted, took out Rhodes and the Bucks. He's now an undefeated MMA fighter. The heels piled up the babyfaces as they posed over them. Hager got huge 'We The People' chants as commentary implied that Jericho seems to be building a little army. Hager bombed Dustin into a table as they made Cody watch. Jericho delivered a Judas Effect on Cody. Hager looks awesome.

OVERALL THOUGHTS
Soo, the feed I got was live from the venue with no commercials, so i'm not fully sure what was shown on TV and what wasn't. Overall I liked the look and feel of the show. It went by really fast, by the time we got the main event, I didn't realize that they'd only have about 12 minutes of actual in-ring time.

There are things here and there that need ironing out. Like I mentioned, work on when you cut the crowd for one. I think they need to work on what they do during commercials if they're going to be showing the whole feed on FITE.tv too. I think they did an ok job introducing some of the teams for next week, but I really hope we got some vignettes here and there, aside from SCU in the White House, everything we saw tonight was in the ring/arena, which is not really a bad thing, but I feel that seeing backstage stuff here and there helps break the monotony and gives the audience's brains a break.
