to think that Dustin Rhodes got a 5 star at this stage of his career is incredible and as his first match outside WWE.
The "first match outside of WWE" part doesn't surprise me, simply in that he is now better able to pick his spots and save his body for the biggest of matches (like Jericho is doing). I'm more impressed by it being his first match in almost a year.
plus he's also given more time and gets to book a story, as short as it was, that got the fans invested. What i kinda meant is that it's an instance that makes me think what some people could be achieving if not constricted by WWE's matches. And you're right, I didn't even considered 'ring rust'
They didn't really book a story at all. It was more of an idea. THIS is the sort of thing that I think a Delirious or a Gedo do very well (and probably Cody, too), but the issue with Gedo and Delirious is that the schedule their promotion runs does not afford them the ability to tell heated stories based only off of vague ideas, and where both of them often fail is their inability to book the shows between the big shows in a manner that supports the big idea "story," (and, in fact, they both often book in a manner that goes against that big idea, so that the things we are seeing actually hurt or even outright contradict the story). When you only have one show a month and all you do is "big" shows, there are fewer opportunities to screw up by lack of attention to detail.

I'll 2nd that. I'm usually not a fan of ladder/tlc matches, but between this one and the North American Title one I'm starting to think NXT might know how to do them right.

The AoP vs. DIY ladder match isn't for behind those, either.

Related/Unrelated, hopefully this is the match that puts Montez on the map... but I say this every SP match. Even amongst the smarkiest IWC's, the man goes virtually unnoticed, it's a crime. He's not the freak that Ricochet is, nor is he as polished as New Day, but he gives me SOMETHING every time he's on my screen that makes me wonder why he's not in the same "Future Star" conversations as Velveteen. The dude's got some serious runway.

Excuse me, sir. Those of us who watch EVOLVE have been singing his praises for months.

But to get us back on topic...

COLE VS. GARGANO WAS EVEN BETTER THAN THE LADDER MATCH!

I don't know how Cole and Gargano managed to top the 2 out of 3 falls match... but dammit they did. I've been forcing my mom to come watch TakeOver with me and she loves it, but I think with this match, it really set the hook in her for NXT, and Cole in particular. She says he reminds her of watching Shawn Michaels when she was younger!

This match was fantastic, definitely add it to my list of 5 star matches too.

ALSO, about Montez Ford. He reminded me in this match a lot of Shelton Benjamin, which is a good thing because he was, to me, one of those extremely underrated guys. I'm not sold on their gimmick, but they won me over on work rate.

Dave gave Ospreay vs Lee 5 stars. He seemed to want to give 4.75 to Ibushi vs Naito, but didn't rate since he didn't want people trying to do the same as them. Bryan got to him.

on a related note, he gave out two DUDs to Super Chowdown

Even though I said differently when I reviewed the show, Hart vs Perfect, KotR 1993 is indeed a five star match
Also Jushin Liger vs. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight champion Hiroshi Hase (Liger wins title, 8:39, 5/25/89) (little preview for when I review the Jushin Liger TV Special 8 Disc set)
NWK Reviews is closed for business for now.
