BRM Reviews the 8/7/2018 Smackdown

RANDY ORTON PROMO- good

CHARLOTTE & BECKY BACKSTAGE- a good segment where they acted like rational adults and talked out their problems.

THE IICONICS vs. BECKY LYNCH & CHARLOTTE FLAIR- 4.75/10
Carmella did guest commentary for this match. The IIconics cut one of their usual annoyingly bad promos before the match, which received “BORING!” chants from the crowd. The match was fine, and Charlotte and Becky worked perfectly together.

RENEE YOUNG INTERVIEWS THE NEW DAY- Kofi was wearing a suit and bow tie. He shooed Renee away and pretended to be an interviewer. This tuned an otherwise good promo by Big E. into something extremely annoying.

CHARLOTTE & BECKY BACKSTAGE- Once again, these two talk and act like rational adults, without resort to violence or overdramatic bullsh*t.

AJ STYLES PROMO- great babyface promo. Samoa Joe was shown watching this backstage.

RUSEV, LANA, & AIDEN ENGLISH BACKSTAGE- good
Rusev walks up to Lana and says he will be more supportive of her and be at ringside for her rematch against Zelina Vega tonight. Aiden English walks up to them and apologizes wholeheartedly for everything that has happened, insisting that he didn’t mean to cost them their matches. Rusev accepts the apology, but tells Aiden that maybe it would be best if he stayed backstage this week.

ZELINA VEGA (w/Andrade “Cien” Almas) vs. LANA (w/Rusev)- no rating, good segment
The match was, like, super-terrible or anything, but it certainly didn’t even hit the level of being okay, either. The important thing, though, was the finish. Rusev was brawling with Almas and English came charging down the ramp to help him and hit him with a HUGE spear that actually lifted Almas up onto the apron… where he made contact with Lana as she was climbing the ropes, causing her to fall off and allowing Vega to pin her. Now THAT was the right way to do the finish they tried last week!

RENEE YOUNG INTERVIEWS SHINSUKE NAKAMURA- Nakamura was cutting a fine promo on Orton when R-Truth and Tye Dillinger showed up so R-Truth could be a delusional goofball (he thought he could earn a US Title match by pinning Carmella in a match he thought he was scheduled for tonight). Nakamura apparently said something rude to him in Japanese (which Truth apparently speaks) and he demanded a match with Nakamura tonight.

BYRON SAXTON INTERVIEWS THE MIZ LIVE VIA SATELLITE FROM THE SET OF MIZ & MRS.- good
“The set of Miz & Mrs.?” It’s a reality show. There aren’t supposed to be any “sets.”
Miz said Miz & Mrs. Was better than Total Bellas, and did so in a way that didn’t annoy the f*ck out of me. He did, however, annoy me by incorrectly pronouncing “gif.” Miz buried Bryan a bunch so Bryan ran in and attacked him (he apparently flew to the set just to do this, knowing that Miz would be there and not at SD). This was short but brutal, with Bryan getting laid out by Miz when Miz smashed a vase over his head while Bryan was fighting off Miz’s bodyguards, but despite Bryan being the one to get laid out, they made it feel like Miz “escaped” from Bryan rather than it feeling like Miz “won” the fight.

SHINSUKE NAKAMURA vs. R-TRUTH (w/Tye Dillinger)- 4/10
Fine for what it was. Nakamura won clean.

BLUDGEON BROTHERS PROMO- much better than usual.

HANDICAP MATCH: The Bludgeon Brothers vs. 3SK- no rating, fun squash
3SK were a trio of goofy jobbers who did something that I assume was supposed to be funny, but it aired during the commercial so we only got to see it with no sound so I have no idea what they were actually doing.
My initial assumption was that their name was a play on B.S.K. the initials of the seemingly ridiculous in hindsight clique of Undertaker, Yokozuna, Charles Wright, Rikishi, Savio Vega, and the Godwinns. In response to Corey Graves asking what it stood for, Tom Phillips ribbed him by saying that the SK stood for “Sterling Keenan.”

#1 CONTENDERSHIP TOURNAMENT FINALS: Sheamus & Cesaro vs. The New Day (w/Xavier Woods)- 8.25/10
They had an awesome match, s you might expect, going over twenty-one minutes… but G-d damn was New Day winning one hell of a wet blanket. We’ve already seen New Day lose to the Bludgeon Brothers. Sheamus and Cesaro feel fresh, and they’d have one hell of a hoss-fight the likes of which I honestly can’t remember seeing in WWE for a very long time… but instead we’re getting New Day going for the SD tag titles. Again.

A pretty great episode of Smackdown. They’re basically giving us one great match and a lot of good build to the PPV every week. That’s a little disappointing for a two-hour show, but when what you consider what we’ve been getting from WWE for the past few months, this is a marked improvement.
