Impact Wrestling Homecoming 2021
July 31st, 2021
Nashville, TN

Homecoming Tournament First Round Match
Alisha Edwards & Hernandez (w/Johnny Swinger) vs. Deonna Purrazzo & "Drama King" Matthew Rehwoldt - 6.5/10
I'm just gonna tell myself that this whole tournament was to debut Rehwoldt, the former Aiden English, and immediately give him a crown that worked in kayfabe for him. He called himself the Drama King before debuting, then he wins a tournament and gets crowned as King and Queen of Impact. I mean, c'mon!

Match was kinda weird, at one point Rehwoldt convinced and hyped up Purrazzo to take on Hernandez herself, and she actually did well against him. It made me believe that Rehwoldt would end up being a geek that avoids wrestling with big dudes, but after Purrazzo was done, he tagged in and got the win with his weird front-facing DDT.

Homecoming Tournament First Round Match
Jordynne Grace & Petey Williams vs. Chelsea Green & Matt Cardona - 7/10
This was one of the better matches in the tournament, I can understand 'star power' wise that Petey and Grace wouldn't go further, so it was a shame that such a strong team got eliminated early in the tournament. Story was that Grace was strongest of the match, but Green and Cardona just worked better as a team.

Post-match - Steve Maclin attacked Petey after the match after their altercation on BTI.

Homecoming Tournament First Round Match
Brian Myers & Missy Hyatt (w/Sam Beale) vs. Rachael Ellering & Tommy Dreamer - Dud.
So Myers got rejected by Dashwood, Beulah McGillicutty, and Franscine, so Beale got him a partner in Missy Hyatt, who wasn't even told she had to wrestle. She was wearing jeans and high heels, and she took them off and tried, but when it came to the match, she ended up bailing on Myers and so Ellering and Dreamer had an easy win.

Violent By Design Promo - Violent By Design cut a promo about failure and learning from it. EY said that VBD was a way of life and this world belonged to them. Same promo, different day.

Homecoming Tournament First Round Match
Fallah Bahh & Tasha Steelz vs. Decay (Crazzy Steve & Rosemary) - 4/10, but really fun.
This was really fun, not a great match, but really fun. Bahh's interaction with both Rosemary and Steve were super funny, and Steelz was mostly there for the actual serious wrestling.

Steve Maclin Promo - We got a promo from Steve Maclin explaining that he attacked Petey Williams because his objective at the moment is the X Division title and Williams got in his way.

Deaner (w/Eric Young, Joe Doering & Rhino) vs. Willie Mack (w/Rich Swann) - 5.5/10
I really didn't need this match tonight, it's already a full tournament, a title match, and a hardcore match, we didn't need one more match that could had been perfectly ok for a weekly Impact episode. Anyway, these two teams are feuding to become #1 contenders for the titles, and after Swann and Mack for a win on Impact, this felt like the 50/50 to get a win on VBD and maybe further into a proper #1 contendership match.

Match was surprisingly back and forth. Mack was cut off at one point, but it didn't last that long before they were trading signature moves and near falls. Finish saw Swann take out Rhino and Doering, but the distraction allowed EY to hit Mack with the flag and set him up for the Deaner DDT and pin.

Cardona/Green Interview - Gia Miller interviewed Cardona and Green about their upcoming match. They said that they do everything together and are in perfect sync. Green said that they're the best team in the tournament and that even if she's going against the Knockouts Champion, their team is not as strong as theirs.

Homecoming Tournament Semi Final Match
Deonna Purrazzo & "Drama King" Matthew Rehwoldt vs. Chelsea Green & Matt Cardona - 7/10
This was arguably the better match of the whole tournament. Purrazzo and Rehwoldt did a pretty good job cutting off Cardona and keeping Green unavailable to get tagged in. Eventually Cardona made the tag, but Green's hot tag lasted only a little bit after they ended in the floor, allowing Rehwoldt to get the win in the ring with his DDT.

Missy Hyatt Interview - Gia Miller interviewed Missy Hyatt about being back. She was saying it was great when Myers interrupted her for not knowing a single move. She shut him off, telling him he had no originality. Hyatt tricked Beale and slapped him with her purse.

Homecoming Tournament Semi Final Match
Rachael Ellering & Tommy Dreamer vs. Decay (Crazzy Steve & Rosemary) - 6/10
Had some early comedy, but it was quickly gotten out of the way before the action started. Decay cut off Ellering for a bit, tagged in Dreamer for the hot tag, and quickly went into some tornado tag action. Finish saw Rosemary spear Ellering out, Dreamer Piledrove Rosemary, he was about to pin Steve too, but Steve rolled him over and got the pin.

Eddie Edwards Promo - Eddie said Morrissey had the whole package, but that he has lost everything and is now trying to rebuild himself at the expense of Impact. Alisha walked up and gave Eddie his kendo stick, telling him to end it once and for all.

Impact X-Division Title Match
Josh Alexander (c) vs. Black Taurus (w/Havok) - 8/10
Easily the match of the night. Story of the match was that Taurus would easily gain momentum if Alexander allowed him to get speed and space for him to bring out the lucha offense, but in addition, even when Alexander closed the distance or wanted to exchange strikes, Taurus had the size and power advantage to meet him right in the middle, and overcome him too. In that way, Taurus injured Alexander’s arm and Taurus took advantage.

Alexander made a slow comeback, going for the ankle lock, but he just couldn't keep Taurus down. Finish saw Alexander block a spear and hit C4 for the win.

Homecoming Tournament Final Match
Deonna Purrazzo & "Drama King" Matthew Rehwoldt vs. Decay (Crazzy Steve & Rosemary) - 6.5/10
Match was good. Even with all the history between Purrazzo and Rosemary, they still played a bit with Purrazzo and Rehwoldt being weirded out by Decay. Match was mostly back and forth, Steve and Rehwoldt did a lot together, a couple of near falls with Steve chasing Deep Impact, but at the end, it was Purrazzo that got the pin on Rosemary with a Queen's Gambit.

Post-match - Purrazzo and Rehwoldt got their crowns.

Hardcore Match
Eddie Edwards vs. W. Morrissey - 7/10
This was one of those matches were the action itself is not necessarily gruesome or innovative, but it just looks painful as fuck, especially for Edwards that got tossed and drop on tables, aprons, steel steps, and whatnot. The story of the match was that Edwards was fighting an unstoppable monster, that no matter what he hit him with, Morrissey kept coming back. Morrissey's brutality got to the point that fans, for the first time ever, chanted "no more tables" at him. At the end, Edwards had the heart and resiliency to make a comeback, tackle Morrissey through a table in desperation, wrap a chain around his knee, and hit the Boston Knee Party for the win.

OVERALL THOUGHTS
Ok show, this really felt like filler more than anything. 80% of the show was the tournament, and like I mentioned, it felt like a big excuse to give Rehwoldt a crown. Having said that, Rehwoldt getting all these wins and showcases was a really good way to introduce someone and make them look strong.
