BRM Reviews the 11/24/2021 Dynamite

Post by Big Red Machine » Nov 25th, '21, 10:07

OPENING SEGMENT- AWESOME!
CM Punk came out (for his match, I assume, based on the fact that he was in his gear), and MJF came out right after and cut a promo on him. They tried to push each other’s buttons. The segment worked very well, even if it probably went a little too long.
There were a lot of tremendous lines here that I don’t want to spoil, so I’ll just say that I heard the last chant I ever thought I’d here at an AEW show: “MIZ! MIZ! MIZ!”

CM PUNK vs. Q.T. MARSHALL (w/the Factory)- 5/10
Paul Turner clearly saw Nick Comoroto grabbing Punk’s leg but didn’t call for the DQ. He did at least eject the from ringside, but it should have been a DQ. Punk won clean.

TONY SCHIAVONE INTERVIEWS CHRISTIAN CAGE & JURASSIC EXPRESS- good
Christian did all of the talking. He noted that Jurassic Express were the new #1-ranked tag team in AEW, and very subtly took credit for their success. He said he would make sure they win the tag titles.

EDDIE KINGSTON’S INTERVIEW IS INTERRUPTED BY 2.0 & DANIEL GARCIA- fine
Kingston responded to this interrupted with barely restrained frustration. The heels were annoying, then threw coffee onto Kingston. People ran in to break up the fight. Fun behind the scenes fact: having to type “coffee” and “Kingston” so close together made my brain slip and accidentally type Kofi instead of coffee.

BEAR COUNTRY vs. GUNN CLUB (Billy Gunn & Colten Gunn) (w/Austin Gunn)- 0.5/10
Apparently Colten Gunn’s AEW record is 34-0! He’s f*cing undefeated, and over two thirds of the way to that big fifty-win milestone they have talked up for other people… and I’m willing to bet that this is the first that 99% of Dynamite viewers have heard of this.
Tony Schiavone asked if someone can could possibly be any more obnoxious that Colten Gunn. This is the same Tony Schiavone who stops just short of calling for MJF’s death on a weekly basis. Does he really not remember what he says from segment to segment? Actually, based on his work in WCW… probably.
Gunn Club won a short match (after Austin reached in from the outside to trip one of the Bears up, because G-d forbid Bear Country lose cleanly). Colten got the pin with a move called the Colt .45, which is not the same as Colt Cabana’s Colt .45, in a promotion that Colt Cabana is in. That name should change. Either that or they have a match for the rights to the name.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- meh
Sting showed up on the ramp. Billy sent Austin to charge at Sting, but he got intercepted by Darby charging out of the tunnel with a HUGE shoulder tackle. The other two Gunns fled from Sting and Darby, who made no effort to pursue. Excalibur said that the Gunns were “not so aggressive when they don’t have the numbers advantage,” which is a comment that would have been great if we hadn’t just seen them forgo the numbers advantage to send just one man to fight what they thought was just one man on the other side.

They advertised their Battle of the Belts on January 8th. Let’s hope their Battle of the Belts goes more like CWF’s and less like ECW’s.

ADAM COLE & BOBBY FISH PROMO- bad
They said they were like best friends (and Cole said the same about him and the Bucks), which proved to be a mistake because, as the saying goes, speak of the Goof-Clowns, and the Goof-Clowns they shall appear.
The Goof Patrol figured that this phrasing must have been Cole trying to provoke them because “you walked right past us,” to which Bobby Fish perfectly responded “why wouldn’t we walk right past you?”
And, of course, when the Goof Patrol showed up, everyone got goofy. “You think you are better friends than me and Bobby?” What a dumb f*cking thing to feud over!

TEAM TAZ TRIES TO GET DANTE MARTIN TO SIGN A CONTRACT- baffling
Team Taz is in a room backstage, along with Dante, Lio Rush, and Tony Schiavone. Rush didn’t want Dante to sign the contract, but Dante did anyway. I don’t understand why Dante would sign with Taz. His guys really haven’t gone anywhere, and he has been doing well under Lio’s tutelage. This creates sympathy for Lio, but it’s been clear that they want Lio to be a heel, so this is counterproductive.

TEAM DMD PROMO- fine

AEW TBS TITLE TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINAL MATCH: Thunder Rosa vs. Jamie Hayter (w/Rebel)- 6/10
Thunder Rosa has won TWENTY-NINE OF HER LAST THIRTY MATCHES. How has this not earned her a title shot?!
Thunder Rosa overcame backfiring interference by Dr. Baker to get the win. That’s three matches so far tonight, and all three have had interference at some point.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- Hayter got angry at Britt and walked off. We’ve seen so much of this crap with MJF and Wardlow that this feels completely inconsequential.

ALEX MARVEZ’S INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS JERICHO IS INTERRUPTED BY 2.0 & DANIEL GARCIA-
That’s a third interrupted promo on this show, too (and that’s not counting MJF interrupting Punk at the beginning of the show because Punk was coming out to wrestle rather than to talk. Jericho made fun of them. They left… and then Jericho just wished Alex Marvez a happy Thanksgiving. If Jericho had nothing to say, why did we cut to him for a promo in the first place?

BRITT BAKER HAS “FRIENDSGIVING” DINNER WITH TONY SCHIAVONE AND REBEL- idiotic
They’re all sitting facing the camera, so this was actually a promo, but the whole set-up was dumb. Even dumber was that there was a TV there with a clip loaded up that Tony had to show Britt. Said clip was that Riho was never actually eliminated from the Casino Battle Royale at All Out 2021. Because of this, Tony Khan is doing the same stupid thing they did with Abadon at Halloween, but this time it’s a “Black Friday Deal” match (for those who don’t remember, Britt’s opponent will get a title shot if she wins… which really doesn’t make it any different than any other non-title match with the champion should be). Why do we keep doing this stupid WWE dumb holiday name bullsh*t?
Britt got angry at Schiavone and went into full clown mode.
Also, I love how All Out was TWO AND A HALF MONTHS AGO, but Tony Khan is only getting around to correcting this apparent injustice now. Lazy Booker Tony strikes again.

BRYAN DANIELSON vs. COLT CABANA- 6/10
Bryan won a fun but short match cleanly, but left the LeBell Lock in after the match. He’s a heel at this point. That’s the sort of thing a babyface can’t do.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT-
Danielson cuts a heel promo on the crowd and challenges whichever Dark Order members are from Atlanta to a match next week. Adam Page came out and offered to defend the title against Dragon, right here and right now. Dragon pointed out (quite reasonably) that he had just wrestled so the match wouldn’t be fair. Dragon claims this is cowardice.
Page says that he isn’t leaving Chicago without fighting Dragon, so to make things fair, he’ll give Dragon the first shot. Dragon feigned declining, but took the shot anyway, starting a brawl that ended with Dragon rolling out of the ring when Page was setting up for a Buckshot Lariat.
This would have been a good segment, if they hadn’t missed the painfully obvious solution: Dragon wants a title shot but doesn’t want one right now because Page is fresh and he isn’t so it wouldn’t be fair. Page wants to have the match here in Chicago and doesn’t want Dragon to keep beating his friends up… so why not have the match on this Friday’s Rampage, from Chicago? Rampage is kayfabe live. This solution should be obvious to everyone involved (and I’m including Tony Khan in this), and yet none of them seem capable of coming up with this simple and obvious solution.

RUBY SOHO VS. KRIS STATLANDER VIDEO PACKAGE- fine
They’re in next week’s TBS Title Tournament match.

CODY RHODES & DEATH TRIANGLE (w/Arn Anderson & Alex Abrahantes) vs. ANDRADE EL IDOLO, MALAKAI BLACK, & FTR (w/Jose The Assistant & Tully Blanchard)- 7.5/10
Cody took his dumb weight-belt off and teased hitting Dax with it, but instead threw it into the crowd. Does he need the thing or not? And if not, why does he wear it in the first place?
The fans threw the belt back. That’s got to suck for Cody’s fragile little ego. Also bad for his ego must have been the crowd booing him all night, and cheering when he was getting beaten down in the corner.
They did stuff. The big spot saw Cody throw a superkick at Andrade but Andrade got out of the way and Cody’s kick accidentally hit Pac… and then they made that not matter at all by first having Pac be up in time to counter the move Andrade tried to hit him with, and then by drawing all focus away from that by doing a big stare-down spot in the ring between Arn and Tully for a match that I just can’t imagine anyone wants to see in this decade. Heels won soon after when Andrade pinned Pac while Malakai took Cody out to stop him from breaking it up.

This show started out well, but went quite downhill by the end. There is just so much mess in this company and not enough editing… or thinking.

A TREMENDOUS observation from Rich Fann of the PWTorch that I have to share:

MJF saying that Punk has become John Cena mirrors Punk's line to Cena in 2011 that "You're not the underdog anymore. You've become everything you hate. You're the New York Yankees."
