BRM Reviews the 8/24/2021 NXT (bad)

Post by Big Red Machine » Aug 27th, '21, 15:14

OPENING SEGMENT- horrible
Cameron Grimes and Ted Dibiase came out and put each other over. The crowd is chanting “YOU DESERVE IT!” to Grimes about a belt he HAD TO CHEAT TO WIN. Grimes talked about how proud he was of this fake accomplishment. The segment ended with both of them doing Grimes annoying catchphrase.

TIMOTHY THATCHER (w/Tommaso Ciampa) vs. RIDGE HOLLAND (w/Pete Dunne)- 6.25/10
Holland won clean.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- fine
Holland went after Thatcher so Ciampa ran in to make the save but got overwhelmed by the whole group of Holland, Dunne, Oney Lorcan, and the returning Danny Burch. Thatcher tried to fight but got hit in the throat with Holland’s truncheon.

ARASH MARKAZI’S SIT-DOWN INTERVIEW WITH CARMELO HAYES- bad
He didn’t say anything new, and came off stupid by thinking the opposite of underdog was “overdog.”

KACY CATANZARO & KAYDEN CARTER DECLARED THEIR INTET TO CHALLENGE FOR THE TAG TITLES VIA SILENT TIK-TOK VIDEO- That’s a heel turn in my book.

MCKENZIE MITCHELL INTERVIEWS DEXTER LUMIS & INDI HARTWELL- Of all of the days they could have gotten married, these idiots picked a day when all of their friends- who only work one day a week- will have to take off from work to attend. And that, of course, is assuming that they’re not intending to get married on the show that day, which history has shown is just about the dumbest thing you can do.

KAYDEN CARTER & KACY CATANZARO vs. GIGI DOLAN & JACEY JANE- 2.5/10
The new team…got beaten quickly and cleanly.

MCKENZIE MITCHELL’S INTERVIEW WITH RAQUEL GONZALEZ IS INTERRUPTED BY FRANKIE MONET- fine
Fine built to Raquel vs. Kay Lee Ray and a little hint of a possible Raquel vs. Franky program as well.

KAY LEE RAY VIDEO PACKAGE- fine
ARASH MARKAZI’S SIT-DOWN INTERVIEW WITH ODESSEY JONES- bad
He clearly doesn’t know what the word “Odessey” means. He comes across as a guy trying really hard to not be bland.

KAY LEE RAY vs. VALENTINA FEROZ- meh squash

SAMOA JOE CALLS OUT ANYONE WHO WILL DARE TO STEP UP TO HIM- meh
He gets Pete Dunne. Cool. Then L.A. Knight. Knight is a fine challenger for a TV match, but he’s coming off of a loss! Even if the other guy cheated, you need to build him up first.
Speaking of people coming off of wins, Kyle O’Reilly was next in the parade. He was still selling, so that was good. His goofy personality and attempts at humor were not so good. He got what he deserved when Ridge Holland jumped him.
Pete Dunne tried to use this distraction to get the jump on Joe, but not only did Joe see it coming, but Tommaso Ciampa actually got the jump on Dunne. Knight tried to get involved and got laid out by Joe. The segment ended with Joe and Ciampa staring down Dunne and Holland… until Joe raised his belt high in the air, at which point Ciampa started eyeing the belt instead.
Joe, Dunne, and Knight’s promos were good. Kyle… not so much. The fighting was good, but everything until then felt very pre-planned.

TED DIBIASE SWAMPS OUT THE REAL MILLION DOLLAR TITLE FOR A REPLICA BELT, THEN LEAVES- dumb
Grimes reacted to this with an “aw shucks” rather than being angry that his idol betrayed him.

MCKENZIE MITCHELL’S INTERVIEW WITH KYLE O’REILLY IS INTERRUPTED BY DUKE HUDSON- meh
Duke said something to Kyle which I couldn’t understand. Kyle took offense to this and slapped him. Hudson slammed Kyle into some lockers and went to leave but Kyle came back after him. Security ran in to break it up.

NXT BREAKOUT TOURNAMENT FINALS: Carmelo Hayes vs. Odessey Jones- 6.25/10
Decent big vs. small stuff. Hayes won with a roll-up.

POST-MATCH STUFF- good
Regal and the other interviewer came out to give him the contract ask him who he would face. He said he hadn’t decided who to face yet, gave props to his opponent, and cut a good little promo.
PETE DUNNE & PALS PROMO- very good
Dunne wants Joe, Holland wants to hurt Ciampa, and Burch & Lorcan want their titles back.

XYONN QUINN vs. BOA (w/Mei Ying)- interesting segment
Boa was winning, then turned around to acknowledge Mei Ying’s “destroy him” hand motion, but this let Quinn recover, hit a running forearm, and get the win.

JOHNNY GARGANO BOTHERS WILLIAM REGAL BACKSTAGE- bad
He wants Regal to not allow the wedding. Regal says it will be good TV. L.A. Knight barged in and started yelling about Samoa Joe so Regal told them both to go away. I was just as annoyed as Regal.

LEGADO DEL FANTASMA vs. HIT ROW (w/B-Fab)- 7.25/10
LDF jumped the bell on Hit Row. We got the usual action, but then a dirty finish when Elektra Lopez joined LDF by taking out B-Fab, then threw her weapon at Scott, who caught it, the referee took it away from him, and that distracted him, allowing him to get rolled up. I would have called that finishing sequence clever if it B-Fab hadn’t proved that she deserved to get attacked by shoving Escobar into the ringpost moments before.

This was a very underwhelming episode of NXT.

Bryan and Vinny officially moved to doing AEW and ROH instead than NXT. I wonder if people will cry about it and they'll come back
