BRM Reviews the 6/24/2021 NXT UK (GREAT!)

MARK COFFEY vs. SHA SAMUELS- 5/10
A meh hoss fight.

ISLA DAWN INTERRUPTS A MILLIE MCKENZIE INTERVIEW- meh
Millie was congratulating Meiko Satomura on winning the NXT UK Women’s Title. Isla Dawn showed up and magically f*cked with the lights, because apparently we have to do that crap here, too. Millie was completely unfazed by this and noted that they had unfinished business. She also called Isla a “weirdo.” Isla just laughed. If this pro wrestling thing doesn’t work out for her, Isla has a ready-made career as a Jessica Hamby cosplayer.

EARLIER THIS WEEK IN THE PC, A VERY STRANGE SEGMENT HAPPENED- bad
They’re interviewing some new woman named “Mila,” asking her how her first week went. She says everyone has been so nice to her. In the middle of this, the lights went out, but you could still see easily, like it was the middle of the day outside.
Aoife Valkyrie ran into a ring and started rolling around. Jinny walked up to the new girl and was mean to her. The new girl said she thought she could beat Valkyrie “just like Meiko did.” Comparing yourself to the world champion on your first week? That’s a kind of arrogant and unlikable. Jinny was mean again. Jinny being mean to her did not mitigate the way Mila came across, and especially as compared to the hard-working and humble Valkyrie who she is so confident she can beat.

SUBCULTURE BACKSTAGE AFTER LAST WEEK’S WIN- meh
They say they proved themselves and against Jinny and Joseph Conners. Mark Andrews and “Flash” Morgan Webster want a title shot.

STEVIE TURNER vs. TONI DIMATTEO- no rating, boring squash
This went on for WAY too long.

GALLUS DO STUFF- whatever

EARLIER TODAY AT THE PC, KENNY WILLIAMS BOTHERS NATHAN FRAZIER WHILE HE IS TRAINING WITH ONE OF THE COACHES- a fine set up for a future match.

BLAIR DAVENPORT SIGN AN NXT UK CONTRACT IN A SLICKLY-PRODUCED VIDEO- I’m watching this a week late, so at this point I know this is Bea Priestley.

JACK STARZ VS. TYLER BATE VIDEO PACKAGE- didn’t like it
Hard work and perseverance are nice, but you need to actually win matches to get a title shot. If you had a million try-outs and finally got a contract on your million-and-first and then don’t win any matches, then it just makes it look like you got your contract out of pity rather than because you’ve improved from the first million failures.

OLIVER CARTER PROMO- fine
He says that Ashton Carter isn’t here because of “family issues,” but he will hit Teoman extra hard to get revenge on Smith’s behalf as well as his own.

OLIVER CARTER vs. TEOMAN- 7/10
Carter’s arm got worked over, but he still got to put on the most competitive showing we’ve seen against Teoman so far. Teoman won clean and went for his usual post-match attack. Rohan Raja came out and looked like he was making the save, but joined Teoman instead. That part I didn’t like so much. Rohan will be a fine understudy for Teoman, but this feels like it’s being done so that Teoman has a partner ready to team with for when Ashton Carter comes back, rather than as a necessary piece to his act.

A-KID PROMO- very good
He took losing his title with humility, whereas Jordan Devlin responded to losing his title by becoming more conceited. He says he will teach Devlin a lesson next week.

#1 CONTENDERSHIP MATCH: Ilja Dragunov vs. Joe Coffey vs. Rampage Brown- 8/10
A great, slow-paced but hard-hitting and intense three-way, as you would expect given the three men in it. I was shocked that Ilja was the one who picked up the win, and even more shocked that Rampage was the one who got pinned.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- great!
WALTER came out and slapped the exhausted Ilja in the face, all but knocking him out. He then choked Ilja out shoved the NXT UK Title his face before holding up the title and putting his foot on Ilja’s chest. WALTER is the best, but Ilja Dragunov always manages to bring that little extra bit out of him.

A great show from NXT UK. There were some questionable decisions made, but at least they’re telling a coherent story with them, and final thirty-five minutes of the show were excellent. I don’t know when WALTER vs. Ilja is happening, but whenever it does, it will be tremendous.
Hold #712: ARM BAR!
