BRM Reviews the 4/30/2019 205 Live (GREAT!)

Post by Big Red Machine » May 2nd, '19, 00:40

OPENING VIDEO PACKAGE- awesome, mostly because of Gulak’s promo

We have Nigel, Vic, Aiden English, and David Otunga all on commentary tonight.

SINGH BROTHERS PROMO- fine
They’re goofy heels. They noted that they are “the only undefeated team on 205 Live,” with Vic informing us that they won the first match on the first episode of 205 Live and then left. This is the second time the first match on the first show has been referenced (Tony Nese also mentioned that he was in that match in his promo during the opening video package). That can’t be a coincidence.

THE SINGH BROTHERS vs. LUCHA HOUSE PARTY (Gran Metalik & Lincé Dorado)- 6.5/10
Kalisto is not here tonight because he is off “doing charitable work in Houston.”
David Otunga, the Harvard-educated lawyer, accidentally said “intricate” instead of integral so he sounded dumb. Aiden English just went with it as if “intricate” were the correct word and started using it, too, so he also sounded dumb.
This was a competent tag team match. Lincé Dorado has one hell of a Shooting Star Press, but we’ve known that since his CHIKARA days.

DRAKE MAVERICK, JACK GALLAGHER, & HUMBERTO CARRILLO BACKSTAGE- good
Maverick tells Carrillo to not get bogged down in a feud with Gulak because it will just stunt his career. Carrillo says he appreciates the advice and is just happy to have the opportunity to represent Lucha Libre. Jack Gallagher showed up and there was a tense moment but Gallagher assured everyone he wasn’t here to cause trouble. He said he wasn’t medically cleared tonight, but would be by the time 205 Live heads to London in two weeks. He said he had unfinished business with both Gulak and Carrillo and asked Maverick to keep him in mind for the London show.

BRIAN KENDRICK vs. ?- The match never happened because Mike Kanellis jumped Kendrick on his way to the ring. Tozawa came out to make the save and they were quickly separated by referees. This resulted in a no DQs match between Kanellis and Tozawa being signed for next week.

ARIYA DAIVARI PROMO- awesome
Daivari has a wonderful cocky confidence about himself. It’s actually a kind of interesting contrast to his promos before he became #1 contender, when he had a lot more of a chip on his shoulder. The win appears to have had a tremendous effect on his competence… but whether this will be a benefit or whether it will make him let his came down due to complacency is yet to be determined.

DREW GULAK vs. TONY NESE- 8.5/10
Daivari was seen watching backstage, but rather than some generic room or the usual backstage set, they made an effort to find a room that this kind of rich guy nightclub anteroom-esque vibe to it. It’s the kind of room I can imagine Daivari seeking out and declaring to be his and his alone, and everyone else going “sure, whatever” because they don’t give a sh*t and are happy to change in the usual locker room because it’s not worth the effort to put up a fight about something so dumb.
Another awesome 205 Live main event. The first ten minutes or so of this match were wonderful. Everything they did felt both fluid and raw at the same time. Everything was going exactly according to plan for the guy who was getting offense in at that particular moment and it never once felt like they were working together to put on a show. They came up with some great little twists and turns to keep the shine going as well as a very good way to cut the babyface off, setting up for one of the big stories of the match.
The match had several stories running through it. The major one was Gulak working over Nese’s midsection, but they also told stories of both men having counters for the other’s finishers, making it all the more dramatic when someone finally got one.

Another GREAT episode of 205 Live, the best weekly wrestling show in the world. Everyone should spread the word and tell the people who have been tuning out of Raw and Smackdown in droves over the past year to tune in to 205 Live because 205 Live never has a bad or even a mediocre show. I can’t even remember the last time the show was merely “good.”
Hold #712: ARM BAR!
