BRM Reviews the 2/5/2019 205 Live (great)

Post by Big Red Machine » Feb 6th, '19, 13:52

MIKE KANELLIS vs. BRIAN KENDRICK- 6.75/10
Maria Kanellis provided guest commentary for this match. Kendrick won clean in a solid opener despite Bennett getting most of the offense in. Nigel noted that this was the second straight week where Kanellis has had “everything going his way” but things somehow managed to “slip away” from him.

ARIYA DAIVAIR PROMO- AWESOME!
He explained why he turned on Hideo Itami and concluded that “if you want to get something done right, do it yourself.”

PROMOS TO BUILD UP TO THE MAIN EVENT- Lio Rush was great, Akira Tozawa (& Brian Kendrick) was fine, Humberto Carrillo was very good, Cedric Alexander was decent

DRAKE MAVERICK ONCE AGAIN REJECTS DREW GUALK’S OFFER TO BE IN HUMBERTO CARRILLO’S CORNER- In fact, Drake is adamant that “NO ONE!” is going to be at ringside for the main event.

DRAKE MAVERICK & NOAM DAR BACKSTAGE- very good
They set up a Dar vs. Nese no DQs match for next week, but did so in a way where Maverick got to at least make a show of standing up for law and order before giving in and Dar got to look good by insisting on getting to fight Nese to the point where he threatened to do so in an extracurricular manner, all but forcing Maverick’s hand.

FOUR-WAY ELIMINATION #1 CONTENDERSHIP MATCH: Lio Rush vs. Akira Tozawa vs. Humberto Carrillo vs. Cedric Alexander- 8.5/10
Lio ran his mouth early on so everyone ganged up on him. They used this to shine Lio up by showing off his amazing speed, but in the end he was eliminated by Tozawa kicking him into Cedric for a Lumbar Check. I’m sure Lio can use this to complain that he was unfairly targeted and that these guys couldn’t beat him in a singles situation.
Next out was Carrillo, though he, too, got to sufficient time to show off what he can do. Carrillo’s elimination saw him getting knocked off the top rope by Tozawa and then pinned after a diving senton, so that creates a reason for Gulak’s philosophy of staying on the ground to have some sort of allure for him when Gulak tries to recruit him so that Gulak doesn’t look like a total idiot trying to convince a luchador not to do high-flying moves.
Cedric and Tozawa then had an excellent final two segment, with Tozawa getting the pin to set up his first title shot in over a year, and also, as he noted in his promo earlier, his first singles match against Murphy.

BUDDY MURPHY PROMO ON THE TITANTRON- He says he isn’t looking past Tozawa, but he is looking through him to WrestleMania, where he will cement his legacy as the “greatest Cruiserweight of all time.” I really hope that last part is just talk and doesn’t mean they’re going to be giving Shane Helms or Billy Kidman a title shot at WrestleMania. With Rey Mysterio I’d almost be okay with it, but Rey vs. Almas is definitely the match to do at Mania this year.

Another great episode of 205 Live, the best wrestling show on TV, bar none.
