BRM Reviews the 1/9/2019 NXT (great)

Post by Big Red Machine » Jan 10th, '19, 21:15

OPENING SEGMENT- great
Gargano came out and cut a promo that came off as a completely babyface promo in which he vowed to win a championship in 2019 after having his tumultuous 2018. He says that teaming up with Ciampa against Aleister Black in that steel cage a few weeks ago meant nothing and he still thinks Ciampa is “a piece of trash with a belt I want.” But he’s still going to do what Ciampa suggested and go after Ricochet’s North American Title for the moment… but not because of what Ciampa said, but rather because of things Ricochet said in response to Ciampa’s comments.
This brought out Ricochet, who asked Gargano if he was going to try to take his title face-to-face, “or are you going to attack me from behind in the parking lot?” Ricochet said he would retain the title at TakeOver: Phoenix. Ciampa came out to try to say something but Gargano told him to shut up and leave. Then Aleister Black’s music hit and Aleister took over the TitanTron to cut a promo from a dark, smoke-filled room in which he said he would made Ciampa fade to black and take his title.
Then the lights went off and Aleister Black appeared right behind Ciampa because he apparently has magical powers now. He went after Ciampa and almost Piledrove him through a table but Ciampa raked his eyes to escape. After they left, Gargano nailed Ricochet with a sucker-superkick to remind us all that he is a heel.
‘We learned that Regal announced on Twitter that the War Raiders will challenge Undisputed Era for the tag titles at TakeOver: Phoenix.

NIKKI CROSS vs. BIANCA BELAIR- 7.25/10
Not only was this a great match, but it was the right choice for Nikki Cross’ last NXT opponent because Bianca finally getting her win over Nikki as momentum going into her match with Baszler is exactly what Bianca needed right now to elevate her. You can’t have her going into a title match feeling like a midcarder.

STREET PROFITS VIDEO- bad
For one thing, they were nowhere near as cool as they usually are, especially because I didn’t for one moment believe Angelo Dawkins was actually making all of the those beatboxing noises. Also, they have a new catchphrase, which is “neva lose fam,” which means that they have not lose… fam. What does that mean? Family? How does that make any sense then?
Also, this went on for WAY too long. The Street Profits with be back in action next week.

MARCEL BARTHEL & FABIAN AICHNER vs. HECTOR KUNSMAN & STANLEY WATTS- 5/10
This was fun and INSANELY exciting for the time it got. It was definitely a showcase win for Aichner & Barthel, but they gave the other two quite a bit in order to make it exciting.

CATHY KELLEY INTERVIEWS RICOCHET- This actually started as her telling us that both Aleister Black and Tommaso Ciampa had been removed from the building after their earlier incident, but she saw Ricochet walking out of the building angrily and tried to interview him. He cut an awesome promo telling us that he doesn’t care if Regal make an official match or not: at TakeOver, he’s coming for Johnny Gargano.

SARAH SCHRIBER INTERVIEWS KEITH LEE ABOUT KASSIUS OHNO’S ATTACK ON MATT RIDDLE LAST WEEK- good promo by Lee challenging Ohno to a match next week.
Also, it’s good to see that someone finally got Keith Lee some Just For Men hair-coloring for his beard to get rid of that gray.

EC III vs. ADAM COLE (w/Undisputed Era)- 7/10
The match was great, but I think it would have been more productive for Cole to just win cleanly over Ethan on Ethan’s way out.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- good
Undisputed Era attacked EC III after the match but War Raiders came out to make the save and basically beat all four UE members up on their own.

A great episode of NXT, moving stories along for TakeOver while also setting up other angles (Lee vs. Ohno) and giving two important characters one last chance to shine on their way out.
