BRM Reviews the (first) 12/26/2018 NXT UK (storyline-important, but extremely boring)

Post by Big Red Machine » Dec 28th, '18, 12:14

OPENING SEGMENT- fine
Assistant (to the?) General Manager Sid Scala comes out… seemingly for the sole purpose of introducing General Manager Johnny Saint. Johnny Saint then announces the first NXT UK TakeOver event, which will take place in Blackpool on January 12th.
Toni Storm came out and played hometown babyface (she’s Australian, but she has apparently been living in Liverpool for a few years). She notes that she won the Mae Young Classic, which apparently means she gets a title shot? When was that ever said? Anyway, Toni wants her title shot at NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool, and Johnny Saint agrees.

JORDAN DEVLIN vs. KENNY WILLIAMS- 4.5/10

JORDAN DEVLIN PROMO- excellent
This started as Radzie trying to interview him but Devlin snatched the mic away from him and told him to get out of the way. Devlin says he has a new target in mind but we never found out who he was. Unlike in most places, this came off like a mystery that they are building up for a quick payoff rather than someone talking in riddles just for the sake of talking in riddles.

RHEA RIPLEY INTERRUPTS RTADZIE INTERVIEWING JOHNNY SAINT & SID SCALA- She said she was happy to face Toni Storm for the title at TakeOver: Blackpool, but managed to still sound mean while saying it, so props to her for that. She also wants to defend her title next week. The authority figures confer for a moment, then return to announce that she will defend her title next week against Deonna Purrazzo. Oh come on! Not only has Deonna not done anything to earn a title shot, but she’s from North America and has mostly worked in North America. I’m fine with the other Europeans and Aussies and Kiwis in NXT UK, but we already have an NXT in North America, and they’re going to be in need of up-and-coming non-Horsewomen heels soon, so why are we sending Deonna over here?

DAN MOLONEY vs. EDDIE DENNIS- no rating, fine segment
Dave Mastiff ran in for the DQ, attacking Dennis. He beat Eddie up a bit but Eddie managed to escape. Then, when the announcement was made that Eddie won, Eddie started smiling and Moloney started to yell at Mastiff so Mastiff knocked him down then flattened him in the corner with a cannonball.

GALLUS INTERRUPT SID SCALA & JOHNNY SAINT GIVING EL LIGERO A PEP TALK- Joe Coffey threatens to put Ligero in the hospital. Sid Scala then announces that Mark Coffey and Wolfgang will face Moustache Mountain in the semifinals of the NXT UK Tag Title Tournament next week.
SEMIFINALS? Oh f*ck off. I’ve spent what feels like three months watching every random geek who showed up on this show find a buddy and keep talking about how they’re going to be in the tournament to crown the first-ever NXT UK Tag Team Titles, and now we’re only getting a four-team tournament? F*CK OFF!

ZACK GIBSON TELLS JAMES DRAKE STUFF ON THE STREETS OF LIVERPOOL- boring as hell.
You don’t like entitled Millennials. We get it.

They announced that Drake and Gibson would be given a chance to impress Johnny Saint enough to earn a spot in the tag title tournament next week. You can’t even tell us who their opponents will be?

TYSON T-BONE & SAXTON HUXLEY vs. TWO JOBBERS- squash

RADZIE INTERVIEWS ISLA DAWN- She says she will continue to try to rise to the top. She gets interrupted by Jinny, who points out that Isla had a title shot and lost. Jinny says that if she had a title shot, she would have won. I’m definitely on board for these two facing off in a #1 contendership match at TakeOver leading to Jinny vs. Toni for the title at Mania weekend.

JOE COFFEY vs. EL LIGERO- 7.75/10
This was probably the best I’ve ever seen Ligero look, playing the excellent undersized babyface against the big, mean Joe Coffey.

Despite the GREAT main event, this was a bad show from NXT UK. It felt like I was watching the same damn thing over and over and over again. Johnny Saint usually appears everyone other episode or so, but he and Scala were all over the place tonight, and in every segment they were in, they were talking to someone and then got interrupted. And they weren’t the only ones getting interrupted either, as that happened over and over and over again. Even Devlin’s promo started with him interrupting Radzie’s attempt to interview him to shoo him away. And now, after weeks of repeatedly watching people say “we’re going to form a tag team to try to get into the tag team title tournament,” the result is going to be a four-team tournament where AT MOST ONE of those teams will have been formed this way, and the four teams are almost certain going to be the teams you would have guessed anyway just off of name value (we know Gallus and Moustache Mountain, Drake & Gibson are almost certainly in, and I’ll be surprised if Andrews & Webster aren’t the fourth). It makes all of the time we’ve spent watching Amir Jordan & Kenny Williams or Tyson T-Bone and Saxton Huxley or any of these other teams feel pointless.
