BRM Reviews wXw We Love Wrestling #25

wXw We Love Wrestling #25 (11/13/2021) Frankfurt, Germany

(Yeah, I’ve switched to going by taping dates now).

AXEL TISCHER vs. JURN SIMMONS- 6.5/10
This was good, but it was only about twelve minutes, which was disappointing when you consider the names involved. Tischer going on first ever since winning the title is an interesting choice. I assume the idea is to use the added gravity of a main event to build up some challengers (right now they really don’t have any aside from a rematch with Marius), but you run the risk of making the title feel small if you keep putting Tischer on first, especially with Marius still winning and telling us all that the title doesn’t matter because he’s still number one.

NORMAN HARRAS INTERRUPTS FRANCIS KASPIN- meh
Norman claims that Kaspin has been derelict in his new role of Director of Sport. Kaspin says he has been scouting talent, and that’s how he found Norman’s opponent for tonight. That’s all well and good, but not responding to Norman after two weeks is kind of douchy.

NORMAN HARRAS vs. OSKAR MUNCHOW- 4.25/10
Munchow is very tall. He beat Norman clean in less than six minutes. Did Norman piss off someone on the booking committee back in the spring?

BACKSTAGE AFTER THE MATCH- meh
We cut to this with no explanation for why we’d be cutting to it. wXw is clear about their shows being post-produced and not taped live (otherwise how would they be able to kayfabe explain having subtitles), so this still works, but they usually at least try to explain why the camera was there. Here, they didn’t. I thought that was worth mentioning.
Anyway, Oskar gets to the back, where Kaspin was matching the match on a monitor. He congratulates Oskar, but tells him to stay humble. Norman then stumbled in and told Oskar not to let the win go to his head. Oskar offers him a handshake and Norman accepts, but then pulls away and tells Oskar to piss off. Kaspin tells Norman to put in more effort or else “things will get dicey.”

IT IS ANNOUNCED TO THE CROWD THAT DOVER COULDN’T MAKE IT INTO THE COUNTRY, SO THE SCHEDULED TAG TITLE MATCH WITH THE ARROWS OF HUNGARY DEFENDING AGAINST HEKTOR INVICTUS & DENNIS “CASH” DULLNIG WILL NOW BE DENNIS VS. HEKTOR VS. ICARUS IN A THREE-WAY-
What the hell did Hektor and Dennis do to earn a title shot?

EARLIER TODAY, DAN INTERVIEWS DENNIS DULLNIG- dumb
Dennis is a clown and didn’t see the email about the change to the card. He was very excited to see Hektor. Hektor said he was very excited to kick Dennis’ ass for costing him some matches many months ago before Hektor disappeared.
Yeah. About the disappearance. It seems to have just been Hektor being sick of Dennis so he started no-showing. That is, at this point the only explanation left that could possibly make sense), but it is also the lamest and most disappointing direction this story could have possibly gone in.

DENNIS “CASH” DULLNIG vs. HEKTOR INVICTUS vs. ICARUS- 3/10
Dennis is still being a clown and pretending that this is a tag match. Dullnig was a clown again and accidentally doing things that annoyed or injured Hektor when he tried ton help him. The problem with this was that Hektor was back to being patient with Dennis and trying not to lose his cool, which makes no sense when you remember how excited Hektor said he was to be able to kick Dennis’ ass, so by the time Hektor finally got annoyed enough to attack Dullnig, I was part the point of caring about seeing Hektor beat up Dullnig and just wanted to see Icarus kick both of their asses. If they hadn’t played that damn backstage segment, this would have been a fine storytelling segment, but that segment moved the goalposts for what this needed to be, resulting in the low rating.
The finish saw Dennis grab Hektor’s flag to try to hit Icarus with but Hektor took the flag and hit Dennis with it. Hektor then tried to hit Icarus with the flag but Icarus ducked it, locked in the Heart of Europe, and Hektor tapped out.

TAYRA GATES vs. STEPHANIE MAZE- DUD!
Gates was quite bad here. Some of her offense looked very weak, and her selling of strikes needs a lot of work. There were a few times where it was painfully clear that she was purposely getting into the position that Maze needed her to rather than making it look natural.

DAN INTERVIEWS TEAM wXw WRESTLING ACADEMY- F*CKING AWESOME promo by Avalanche about how they are going to kick the heel’s asses in the main event.

wXw SHOTGUN TITLE MATCH: Michael Knight(c) vs. Bobby Gunns- 7.25/10
Knight wanted to defend his title against Bobby Gunns, so we’re not doing the stupid lottery today. HOORAY! Knight had said in an interview that he saw this as a “competitive rivalry,” but unbeknownst to him (though he probably should have assumed it), Gunns did not, and so when Knight was happy to do one of those idiotic Ishii-Shibata spots where you take turns sitting down and letting the other guy kick you in the back, grabbed his arm, pulled him back and stomped his arm, changing the tone of the match. From that point on, the story was that they were evenly matched. The finish saw Gunns have Knight in a roll-up, but time expired. I assume these two will have a rematch at the Anniversary Show.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- very good
Knight looked very disappointed about retaining his title via draw instead of winning the match. Dan interviewed him, and he said as much. Bobby Gunns interrupted and said he would have won if there was more time on the clock. Knight forcefully disagreed. Gunns aid that there would be “consequences” and walked off. Knight go went to find Francis Kaspin, presumably to demand a rematch.

TRISTAN ARCHER vs. LEVANIEL- 5.75/10
This was a decent little match, but the important part here was to move Archer more towards the heel side of ledger, as he got upset at the crowd cheering Levaniel so much and took quite a while to relinquish his submission hold after Levaniel tapped.

DAN INTERVIEWS VINCENT HEISENBERG, MAGGOT, & BABY ALLISON- very good
They are feeling humiliated after Avalanche and Anil locked them out of the building during a brawl last week, so tonight they’re going to get revenge. Allison notes that her presence will give them a numerical advantage. Heisenberg in particular was great, talking about how we would make the babyfaces pay.

wXw WOMEN’S TITLE MATCH: Iva Kolasky(c) vs Nicky Foxley- 3.75/10
Foxley worked the arm. This was nowhere near good enough for a nine-minute title match (and a nine-minute title match isn’t great in general). Kolasky’s strikes just don’t look good. I am completely baffled that wXw chose to put the title on her.

NO DISQUALIFICATIONS TORNADO TAG TEAM MATCH: Team wXw Wrestling Academy (“The Avalanche” Robert Dreissker & Anil Marik) vs. Vincent Heisenberg & Maggot- 7.5/10
This was a good brawl. The heels handcuffed Avalanche around the thing that connects the turnbuckle to the ringpost, so Anil had to undo it to at least let Avalanche move around and fight (although his hands were still stuck together). After running wild for a bit, the babyfaces got some duct tape and taped Maggot and Allison’s hands together around the ringpost (and Anil then gagged Allison when she wouldn’t stop yelling, which got a good pop) so they could face the monster Heisenberg two against one.
Avalanche got Heisenberg in a Camel Clutch using the chain of the handcuffs and Anil just started punching him in the face. Heisenberg wouldn’t give up, so Anil grabbed a toolbox and smashed him in the face with that (and he seemed to get Avalanche a bit, too), but that was enough to put Heisenberg out and get the win via stoppage.
This was a great brawl with some good storytelling and an excellent finish, but it didn’t feel like the violent blow-off that this feud needs. Hopefully it will keep going a bit longer and they’ll blow it off at the Anniversary Show.

This was a decent episode of We Love Wrestling. The biggest strike against it, to me, is that we still have almost no idea of what any of the matches at the Anniversary Show will be.
