Were people really shocked that Ishii beat Okada in the G1? I figured it (and Okada's loss to Fale) had to happen just because of the numbers. (And, by the way, neither of them got title shots out of their clean wins over the champion- though Fale was inexplicably stuck in a non-title match against Okada afterwards which he promptly lost. How the hell can you call Gedo the "Booker of the Year" when he just throws away a world title match that would have helped headline a relatively weak show (aside from the pointless Omega vs. Goto rematch, the other two top matches involved only gaijins, and one was for the ROH World Title while the other was a jr. heavyweight team challenging for the heavyweight belts).

it's not Ishii beating Okada, it was the way he did it, Ishii dominated Okada, Ishii seriously had Okada's number in that match. Obviously it was about numbers, all that tournament is booked based on numbers and use the wins for future reference when necessary. Ishii didn't need to get a title shot straight away, just knowing that win is out there is a good thing to bring up if the day ever comes that Ishii wants to change his focus from the NEVER title to the world title.

I did vote for Gedo as best booker, because surely I've said that I hate how he books the tag titles, but the storytelling of all the top titles was awesome IMO, Tanahashi's downfall, the rise of Omega, LIJ, Shibata's feud with the old timers, etc. All of those I thought were awesome. For all we know, losing Nakamura/AJ et al at the start of the year would really hurt NJPW, and within a month NJPW still felt as strong as ever, surely he has the talent, but booker is 50%. WWE, ROH, NXT all have the talent, doesn't necessarily level up to the booking quality as NJPW.

I didn't really see it that way. It was just another match to me, and when you're forced to pick between the ultra-babyface Okada and big, fat, ugly hard-hitting Ishii, obviously you're going to have Okada in traditional babyface role and thus Ishii will dominate most of the match by necessity of the story (and, I think that is the story that would work best when you have a guy with a more traditional pro wrestling style facing off against a guy who uses this sort of style that has coalesced around the NEVER Title with guys like Ishii, Shibata, EVIL, Goto, Makabe that is based off of hitting too hard and not selling at all, because Okada now has to prove that he is tough enough to do their style).
As for it mattering when Ishii goes for the IWGP Heavyweight Title, if this was any other promotion I'd agree with you, but with New Japan I just don't think we'll ever get Okada vs. Ishii for the IWGP Heavyweight Title. Between Gedo drastically cutting down on the number of title defenses per year (Okada's win over Omega was only his second defense, and he won the belt back in June- that's worse than Jay Lethal in ROH), their efforts to book both the IC and Heavyweight Titles as main event titles, and New Japan's allegiance to this almost completely pointless CHAOS faction, I just don't think the match will ever happen.

Shibata vs. the old-timers was good, and Omega's rise was well-booked, but I thought the Tanahashi "downfall" storyline was failure, and here is why: the G1 and everything after it. It was working in the beginning of the year, with him losing every big singles match from January to the time he was injured (although him winning the six man titles didn't help)... although I suspect that he was originally slated to beat Omega for the IC Title in the ladder match, because otherwise Omega has to a job to drop the title AFTER winning the G1.
But then the G1 came. They had the perfect excuse to have Tanahashi drop a whole bunch of matches and do worse than he otherwise would have so that he could be rebuilt, but they totally squandered that. Yeah, sure he dropped his matches early, and yes, one of those losses was to Tama Tonga, but then he went on to be Goto and Ishii and Fale and even freakin' Marufuji and there he is on the final day with a win-and-in, just like he has been every year for the past, like, decade. It didn't feel like a "downfall" for Tanahashi so much as it did that this year was his turn to play the role of the guy who starts off poorly but makes the big surge at the end. By the end of the tournament, his loss to Tama Tonga didn't feel like it was any different than Omega's loss to YOSHI-HASHI (and, in general, because of how much Gedo has expanded the tournament and because his one and only way of booking the G1 is keeping both blocks as clustered as possible, surprising G1 jobs don't really mean anything anymore). The only reason he didn't make it back to the finals of the G1 was because he and Okada went to a draw (rather than him actually taking a loss like he did in 2014... to Davey Boy Smith Jr... which no one even remembers at this point), thus meaning that poor Goto basically backed into the tournament, and from that point on it was business as usual for Tanahashi, and by the end of the year he's back in the semi-main event of the Tokyo Dome competing for one of the two top titles. It didn't feel like there was any real story of Tanahashi struggling to do much of anything. It felt more like "well... we needed to job him out in the beginning of the year to help Omega in Feb. and then because he can't win the New Japan Cup, and then he'll do a few obs to star the G1 but then he'll get his wins back and end the year basically where he started it because TanahashiWinsLOL."
I also think that for every story they told right, there were a bunch of others that were mismanaged. Tenzan was obviously the most egregious, but I really think that LIJ was mismanaged, too. BUSHI got beaten so many times that him winning felt like it was done just so KUSHIDA could win it back (which they also did last year with Omega and KUSHIDA), Sanada was immediately jobbed out to Okada and his win over Tanahashi in the G1 ceased to feel important when they had him job to Okada again at the next show, EVIL wasn't booked particularly well, either (his win over Shibata was another clear example of doing a title change just to change t back).
In addition, he did nothing to capitalize on the momentum of Ospreay or Taguchi coming out of the G1, Kaimatachi joining LIJ just kills BUSHI even more, and even when give the chance to do something new in the World Tag League by either putting over Goto & Ishii or even better, capitalizing on the momentum that the Ishii and YOSHI-HASHI team had (and YOSHI-HASHI alone had a TON of momentum coming off of the G1 and the Omega match at Destruction), he just put the same goofball team over that won last year, so got the same match-up of Honma & Makabe vs. Obligatory Bullet Club Heavyweight Team... and then he just shat all over the entire tournament by randomly adding Ishii & Yano to the title match just because he wanted them to win now.

You do seem to be the only one. The difference between this and the Threemendous match was that this was happening for a reason and had actual emotion going into it. It's the difference between booking and PWG.

Best debut of the year: The GLORIOUS Bobby Roode
RU: Gallows & Anderson in WWE
Club really? over Nakamura, AJ, or Sanity?
I considered Nakamura's debut to be the video, which wasn't that great. AJ's was big moment, don't get me wrong, but ultimately it was just AJ in the Rumble lasting for a long time before a semi-forgettable elimination.

Worst Waste of Talent in a promotion: Cheerleader Melissa in LU
RU: Cedric Alexander in ROH
(La Sombra in WWE almost beat out Cedric, but at least WWE has been trying to do something with him).
Sombra feels like a waste, but at least you can say they're barely developing, ROH had Cedric at his highest point and wasted him
The other thing working in ROH's "favor" here in my calculations is that Cedric was only wasted for five months before going elsewhere.
