NWK Books the Invasion and beyond

Post by NWK2000 » Aug 25th, '16, 21:06

Prologue
In the weeks after WM17, Shane McMahon is seen sitting up in the luxury boxes of every Raw and Smackdown. Two weeks before Backlash 2001 on Raw, Shane McMahon is joined by Dusty Rhodes, and again on Smackdown. On the go-home show, Shane explains to Jonathan Coachmen in an interview that Dusty is his business associate, helping him shape his future plans for WCW. Dusty uncharacteristically is upset about being interviewed "I didn't come here to talk to WWF cameras get the hell out." he says sternly. Th

Backlash 2001

The only match that changes on this card is that Big Show takes on Jeff Hardy, who's being punished for his upset win over HHH. Big Show wins.

Nothing out of the ordinary takes place until the main event, which is the Two Man Power Trip vs The Brothers of Destruction. Just as the two teams are about to lock up, Booker T hops the guard rails, with the WCW and US Title belts in tow, screaming, "I'M THE CHAMP SUCKA, I'M THE CHAMP." As he is being lead away by security, Steve Austin jaw jacks with him, only to turn into a Diamond Cutter from DDP. Triple H goes to fight DDP but also gets a Diamond Cutter. The Brothers of Destruction stand toe to toe with the invaders, only to get jumped from behind by 22 of the 24 bought out wrestlers from WCW, lead by Buff Bagwell. Initially, Undertaker and Kane are able to fight off some of the smaller guys who enter the ring first, but are quickly overwhelmed by the massive number of guys bumrushing the ring. Bagwell ducks out of the ring to throw anything weapon he can find under the ring into the ring. He is immediately bowled over a group of WWF guys, lead by The APA, the WWF guys and WCW guys stand off for a brief second, and then go toe-to-toe brawling. Guys like The Big Show or Albert are swarmed by the invading force. Paul Heyman, who's been silent on commentary for this entire altercation says "Boys, it's time!"
At that moment RVD, The Sandman, Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, and Rob Van Dam jump the guard rail and open up with various weapons shots on both WCW and WWF guys. Suddenly, Rhyno Gores Steve Blackman and Grand Master Sexay gets a DDT from Raven. Jim Ross is outraged that Rhyno and Raven would turn on WWF. Rhyno tosses Blackman out of the ring, Sabu follows suit, decking Jim Ross, tearing apart the announce table, depositing Blackman onto it, and doing a Triple Jump Moonsault through the table. Two men are unconcious on the outside, and the brawl has broken the top rope. The brawl is still on as we go off the air.

Building to Judgement Day 2001

WWF Tag Team Championship scene-

The Tag Team Championship scene is basically the catalyst for the entire Invasion angle. On the post Backlash 2001 Raw, Shane McMahon cajoles Vince McMahon and The Brothers of Destruction (all of who are rightfully pissed that they were made to look bad in closing moments of Backlash 2001) to put the WWF Tag Team titles on the line against two handpicked guys from WCW in the main event . Shane chooses Mike Awesome and Lance Storm. Storm and Awesome win clean when Storm spends the match working Taker's leg, who hot tags to Kane, who is effectively over powered by a fresh Mike Awesome (keep in mine Kane has an injured arm). The match ends when Awesome Awesome Bomb's Kane on the same shoulder as his bad arm and wins the title. Storm and Awesome leave through the crowd. Shane once agains cajoles Vince on Smackdown, basically listing the lineage of the tag team championship in WWF, and saying that if he wants to see those titles ever again, he'll put every other WWF title on the line to WCW guys. as well as giving his guys matches on Raw and Smackdown, Paul Heyman interrupts and demands ECW be equally involved, which sets in motion the entire Judgement Day 2001 card. Vince, Shane, and Paul each agree to a Fatal 4 Way match where teams from WCW, ECW, and WWF can have preliminary matches on Raw and Smackdown to qualify for the three vacant spots. Over the ensuing weeks,

-The Brothers of Destruction squash Lash Leroux and Evan Korageous, with Kane pinning Lash after a Tombstone. Kane hits a second Tombstone post match, but when he goes for a third Undertaker yanks the limp Lash away, Kane shoves Taker, simply bellowing, "WHERE WERE YOU!" and stomping to the back.
-Rhyno and Raven qualify when they beat Steve Blackman and Grand Master Sexay. Somewhat inexplicably, Sexay does the classic "walk out on the match and leave your partner to get destroyed " spot, while Rhyno Gores and pins Blackman
-Lastly, Edge and Christian beat The Dudleyz, who Paul Heyman announces have defected to ECW. Edge spears D-Von to win clean.
Also worth noting is that Storm and Awesome appear on TV only to be shown relaxing in the luxury box with Shane and Dusty. Dusty routinely avoids the pestering of WWF announcers asking what he role is in WCW or why he's there.

WWF Title scene
As mentioned above, this is put in motion on the Smackdown after Backlash, where Vince McMahon books WWF Champion Austin vs WCW Champion Booker T for Judgement Day. In a backstage segment later in the match, primarily to allow for a repeatable line in video package for Judgement Day, Vince says "If you lose that WWF title, you'll be forfeiting my father's legacy to those miscreants. And then, it'll be your....Judgement Day."

Over the insuing weeks, Steve Austin spends his wrestling appearances on Raw and Smackdown fighting any WWF guy with a WCW history handpicked by Vince, because remember, we're still dealing with bat shit insane Vince, who's using the opportunity to prove a point that's lost on everyone but him and his family. Austin beats guys like Benoit, Guerrero, Malenko, Saturn, Haku, Rikishi (Vince McMahon mistankenly calls him a member of the Samoan SWAT team), and, most surprisingly, Steven Richards, who has grown long hair and a scraggly unkempt beard, wearing a stained white T-shirt, basically implying that he is homeless. Every one of these matches with the exception of Richards, who is a squash. is meant to be competitive and elevate the guys mentioned.

Booker T meanwhile, is challenged weekly by someone looking to "defend the honor of the WWE". This leads Booker to competitve matches with people like Hardcore Holly, Bull Buchanan, Big Show, Essa Rios, and some of the more technically proficient guys who had lost to Austin would try to rebound by challenging Booker.

Booker and Austin are kept apart until the go home Smackdown show, where Austin cuts an impassioned promo about how, if he loses to Booker T, he would be forfeiting the legacy of the company that gave him everything to the company that had tossed him away like garbage, and he simply cannot allow that to happen. Booker's remark is a lot more to-the-point
"When I scissor kick yo ass, you're gonna get to lay there like the garbage you are, NOW CAN YOU DIG THAT, SUCKAAAAAAAAAAAA?"
Austin goes for a Stunner but Booker T rolls out of the ring, only attempt to go back in and fight Austin. This leads to big pull apart to end the go home show

WWF Intercontinental Championship scene

In contrast to the Austin, Booker feud. Triple H immediately sets after trying to murder DDP. DDP however avoids most of these attempts and is always trying to make peace with Triple H. Finally, DDP cuts an in ring promo where he begs Triple H to come out and listen to what he has to say. Triple H reluctantly does so. DDP implies that Triple H and he are not so different.
"We both clawed our way up from adversity. We both are hard working men. We both are the faces of our respective companies. We both come home to beautiful wives and big houses. The difference is, the reason why you're at where you're at is because you *censored* the right girl."
Triple H goes to strike DDP, but he ducks it and hits The Diamond Cutter out of nowhere, leaving Triple H laying. The next show, we get an interview via satellite with Kimberly Paige, asking how she feels about the situation. She plays the sympathetic good wife at first, but then asks Triple H, "Remember No Way Out Hunter? You barely beat Steve Austin. What makes you think you can survive The Diamond Cutter?" Triple H goes apeshit on his opponent that night, Evan Korageous, who cuts a jobber promo about "having something to prove" after being squashed by Kane and Taker a few weeks ago. Triple H leaves Evan in a pool of his own blood with sledgehammer shots after a clean victory, where DDP revives his old gimmick of casually filming with a tripod at ringside. The two mostly trade promos where, on the go home episode of Smackdown, DDP introduces his new New Jersey Triad, Chuck Palumbo and Kanyon. Triple H beats Palumbo and Kanyon clean by Pedigreeing Kanyon, but are jumped by the other two guys, and Triple H is left laying.

Women's Championship scene

In the post Backlash Raw. the first thing we see is Chyna pulling up in the parking lot of the arena, only to be rammed on the driver's side door by a white Hummer. Three black clad masked figures flee the hummer. Vince McMahon cuts an in set promo letting us know that Chyna has been taken to a medical facuilty and it's been determined that she can't wrestle again, so the Women's title will be vacated and a new champion will be crowned in some manner at Judgement Day. Because of the agreement made on the post Backlash Smackdown, Paul Heyman introduces ECW's contribution to women's wrestling.....JAZZ! Jazz is booked as uncontrollable monster, basically assaulting any female she can. Lita steps up to defend WWF and to stop the monster. Jazz makes some homophobic remarks about Matt and Jeff, which leads to a series of mix tags featuring some combination of Team Extreme vs Rob Van Dam, Jazz, and some other interchangable ECW stars. The go home Smackdown features Jazz teasing hitting Stacy Kiebler with a chair backstage, and Lita running up with a chair of her own. However, Jazz shoves Stacy towards Lita, causing Lita to accidentally wack Stacy, Lita calls for a medic while Jazz walks away laughing.

WWF European Championship scene

This feud begins two weeks after Backlash 2001, when Elix Skipper, Matt Hardy, and RVD get into a backstage argument about who the true show stealer of all three promotions combined is. As Matt and Lita are interlinked, these two feuds play out simultaneously in matches until Judgement Day 2001

WWF Hardcore Title scene

The Hardcore Title from this point forward is used almost exclusively as a WCW TV Title style third tier belt, and never defended on Pay Per View. Rhyno loses the after qualifying for the Tag Team Fatal Four Way in a fluke win to "Above Average" Mike Sanders during a match with Albert in which Justin Credible interferes (more on that below) and Mike Sanders takes advantage of the 24/7 rule to win. The next show , he is pulverized by Sabu who wins the title. Mike is stretchered out after. Unless otherwise specified, Sabu defends the Hardcore Title on TV completely independent of what I'm doing.

Additional matches

The Invasion angle causes a rift in X-Factor when Justin Credible joins ECW. X-Pac challenges Credible to a tag team match with X-Pac and Albert vs Credible and a partner of his choosing

Steve Blackman has been cutting promos against Grand Master Sexay but Sexay has been incognito since screwing Blackman, to the point where Steve Blackman vs Grand Master Sexay is bumped off of the PPV.

Sunday Night Heat
Jung Dragons def Essa, Crash, and Hardcore (Yang pins Crash, Hardcore beats up Crash in the post match
Steve Blackman def Sandman via choke submission
Judgement Day 2001

Matt Hardy (c) def Elix Skipper and Rob Van Dam to retain the European Championship

This is your standard WCW style high flying opener. The finish comes when RVD hits the Five Star Frog Splash on a prone Elix Skipper, but just as the ref counts 3, Matt Hardy dives off the top rope hitting his signature leg drop on the back of Van Dam's head and covering him

Lita def Jazz to win the vacant WWF Women's Championship

Jazz pretty much squashes Lita until she is suprisingly rolled up and pinned. Jazz throws the ref over the top rope in a fit of anger as she stalks to the back

X-Pac and Justin Credible def Justin Credible and mystery partner JERRY LYNN (X-Pac pins Lynn

The only thing notable about this match, other than Lynn's defection, is that Jim Ross points out that that makes X-Pac a conceivable contender for the Light Heavyweight Title, to which Heyman nervously concedes..

Mike Awesome and Lance Storm (c) def Rhyno and Raven, E&C, and The Brothers of Destruction to retain the WWF Tag Team Championship (Undertaker accidentally collides with Kane while Kane's on the apron, is rolled up and pinned.
Kane retreats up the ramp while Taker yells at him to come back. Kane turns around one last time, shaking with anger before he heads to the back

DDP def Triple H (c) w/ Stephanie McMahon to capture the Intercontinental Title

The match begins with DDP and Triple H trading blows in the ring. This goes back and forth for about 5 minutes. Triple H hits his facebuster knee, which DDP immediately responds to with a Diamond Cutter, which DDP nets a solid two count on. The rest of the story of the match is that Triple H is out of sorts after the Diamond Cutter, and basically trying to fight back from the dazed state he's in. Triple H blocks the Diamond Cutter after some high impact moves by simpling shoving DDP off, but DDP counters back with a monster clothesline and continues to work over the neck. DDP goes for the Diamond Cutter a second time, but Stephanie distracts the referee just as Triple H hits a low blow. This leads to Triple H hitting his signature comeback spots Knee Facebuster! Spine Buster! Triple H has DDP set up for the Pedigree! WHAT! One of the masked men who ended Chyna's career just nailed Triple H with the intercontinental belt! Just as this happens, one of the others pulls the ref out of the ring and hits him with a devestating right, while yet another is harassing Stephanie McMahon. The masked man who hit Triple H stands next to his compatriot who knocked out the ref, and motions for the ref to be thrown back in, while the one harrasing Stephanie has tackled her into the guard rail, and stands over by the other masked figures. DDP makes the cover just as the ref revives! One, two, THREE! DDP's won the intercontinental title. DDP falls to a sitting position on the ramp while the rest of the alliance comes out to celebrate. The masked trio stand in the ring to unmask together......JERRY LAWLER, BRIAN CHRISTOPHER, AND THE KAT!" DDP stands slackjawed. Meanwhile, there's a beat of silence at the commentary desk. Heyman explodes into joyous, psychotic laughter, while Jim Ross pleads, "KING! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? THE COMPANY THAT GAVE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY EVERYTHING! WHY HAVE YOU SPAT ON US!"
Jerry catches sight of Jim Ross, gives his signature laugh, and he and his family calmly exit through the crowd.

Steve Austin (c) def Booker T by DQ to retain the WWF Title

This match starts out slow, with Steve immediately going for the Stunner but Booker T blocking, pushing him through the ropes in the process. When Steve enters, with Booker obeying the rules of the referee, they get into a hold trading sequence. which ends in Booker T jaw jacking during a hammerlock, and Steve Austin hitting a go-behind and latching on The Million Dollar Dream. Booker makes it to the ropes, but low blows Austin when the ref is out of position. This leads to Booker using submissions (which Heyman deems Booker purposefully changing up his moveset to throw Austin off. Austin makes a brief comeback, which Booker immediately puts a stop to with a Sidewalk Slam. Booker goes for the Harlem Hangover....AUSTIN MOVES AT THE LAST SECOND! Booker looks hurt having missed the move. Shane and Dusty run down, coaching on Booker, but not interfering. Booker narrowly misses a Lou Thesz Press from Austin, hitting him with The Harlem Sidekick! Booker hits The Bookend! One....two....thr-NO! Austin kicks out! Booker sets Austin up for another Bookend, Austin blocks it! STUN-NO! BOOKER COUNTERS IT INTO A BACKDROP! ONE....TWO....THR-NO! AUSTIN KICKS OUT AGAIN! Booker, visibly frustrated, kicks Austin in the gut, flipping him off, and flipping off the crowd, announcing loudly that he will Scissor Kick him. Jim Ross pleads with Booker not to, with Austin's history of neck problems, this could end his career! Booker bounces off the ropes for the kick, Austin steps out of the way at the last second! STUN-NO! Booker shoves Austin into a turnbuckle, which, in the scuffle for the Million Dollar Dream, was exposed, Austin staggers into a roll up! ONE, TWO, HEBNER IS REFUSING TO COUNT! Booker gets in his face as Austin lays prone on the mat. Booker shoves Hebner, Hebner shoves Booker, pointing to his WWF ref symbol. Booker punches Earl. Earl rings the bell to call for the DQ. Shaneand Dusty are screaming at Earl as he leaves. Meanwhile, and irate Booker turns right into a Stunner. Shane and Dusty pull Booker out of the ring while Jim Ross celebrates this as a the first win in a war, while Heyman crows angrily about what has happened. Austin looks conflicted in the ring as we go off the air.

Road to King of the Ring 2001

The King of the Ring Tournament

Based on the lead in to Judgement Day 2001, the tournament brackets are revealed. Vince McMahon explains that he, Shane, and Heyman have agreed on who should qualify based on a number of factors (Vince says this with a less-than-convinced tone of voice), explaining that the first round will take place over Raw, Smackdown, and WWF Sunday Night (Basically a two hour version of Heat meant to mirror WCW Saturday Night), with the semis and finals taking place at the actual King of the Ring Pay Per View

Chris Benoit defeats Buff Bagwell. Bagwell taps before Chris can apply pressure on the Crossface, leaving Chris and the announcers bewildered as to what's up with Bagwell
Kane def WWF Tag Team Champion Lance Storm. Undertaker gets into it with Mike Awesome, stopping an interference. Kane wins with the Tombstone. He goes for a second one in the post match, but Taker again yanks Lance off. Kane goozles Taker's neck in a fit of anger, but relents and, head hung, stomps to to the back

Sabu def a returning Kurt Angle. In a backstage interview with Kurt, we're told that he took time off to recover from his Ultimate Submission match with Benoit, but when he heard about these greedy WCW and ECW ne'er do-wells making a mess in his house, he had to come back to do something, come hell or high water, starting with Sabu. At the beginning of the match we find out that the match is a No DQ match. Sabu dominates an unprepared Kurt Angle, with Kurt getting a few hope spots in, but getting leg dropped through a table for the three. Medics come to check on Kurt, and one of the people who does is Chris Benoit, Jim Ross pointing out that the Invasion has united the entire WWF.

Rob Van Dam def WWF European Champion Matt Hardy clean. Heyman proudly announces that this will make him a clear contender for the title.

With this in mind our semi finals are revealed for the King of the Ring

Rob Van Dam vs Kane
Sabu vs Chris Benoit

WWF Title scene

Stone Cold starts off the post Judgement Day 2001 Raw saying he put a lot thought into it, and admits that, while he doesn't like Booker T, in fact he can't stand him, but he thinks the way the match ended last night was bullshit. He wants to give Booker T a rematch for the title. Shane, Vince, and Paul come out together, with Vince looking more downtrodden than usual. Shane says that he completely agrees with Ausitn, stating that they would all like to avoid biased officiating . With that in mind, he and the other owners will make some phone calls, and reveal the special guest referee next week on Raw. But before that, he's booked a match. Steve Austin and Earl Hebner vs himself and Booker T in the main event of Raw! The match sees schenanigans immediately as referee Nick Patrick counts Austinbeing shoved into Earl on the apron during a tie up counts as a tag. Earl gets the crap beaten out of him by Booker and Shane, until Earl distracts the referee by calling attention to Booker on the apron doing something "shifty". This allows Earl to low blow Shane, and the teams to make the hot tag. Booker gets the better of the exchange at first, but Austin fights back, Stunning Booker T. A devious smirk crosses Austin's face.....he tags in Earl and throws him on top of Booker, 1, 2, 3! EARL HEBNER just pinned Booker T. This begins the evolution into the crazy Booker T we all know in WWE. On the next Smackdown, Shane explains that an advertised Booker T vs "The One" Billy Gunn match won't happen because Booker T will be training with sparring partners until King of the Ring. Booker T is kept on TV through Rocky style training vignettes, which shows Booker T running intense wrestling related drills, which extreme focus on countering and blocking The Stunner. Austin meanwhile is mowing down jobbers/lower midcard guys until King of the Ring. On top of all this, on the Raw a week after Judgement Day 2001, Vince announces the special ref, someone who has made their career in nearly equal parts in WWF and WCW.....ROWDY RODDY PIPER! Piper basically says he's too old to have loyalty to either company at this point, and he'll call it right down the middle. Piper is interrupted by Steven Richards who's clearly out of his mind, also looking more unwashed and disgusting than ever before. Piper lays into him for being a former censor, basically saying that this is what he's always wanted to do to censors, before putting him in the Sleeper. Piper is seen both observing the Austin matches and watching the Booker T training vignettes on TV backstage. On the go home show, Booker and Piper confront each other in the ring, basically saying if he tries to anything funny he'll disqualify him instantly AND THEN kick his ass, before stealing his "CAN YOU DIG THAT SUCKA" catchphrase.

Triple H vs Jerry Lawler

Jerry is given time to explain his actions on the post Judgement Day Raw. As The Lawler Family walks to the ring, Kat has Brian and Jerry on each arm. Jerry tells the story of February 26th 2001, the Raw after No Way Out, when his wife, The Kat was made to join the RTC under extreme duress, and when he (Jerry) spoke out about it, he was fired along with his wife. None of the "WWF officials" including Jim Ross, who he considered until this point to be one of his best friends, even if they didn't always see eye to eye, stood up for them, "I had half a mind to sit this Invasion out and come back in when the dust was settled, but then I decided that if WWF was going to die, I'd be more than glad to be one of the people who put a bullet in it *signature Lawler laugh*. And I realized who my target should be in that moment as well, "The Game" Triple H, who walks around with his wife untouched, who gets to carry his family name. Do you know what they told my son Brian? They said, "If people find out you're Jerry's kid, it might hurt your chances here" neglecting the fact that I'm the *censored* king of wrestling! And you might be wondering, why Chyna. NOBODY, and I MEAN NOBODY USES MY WIFE AS A GOOFY MINI ME AND GETS AWAY WITH IT! Triple H, if you saw what we did to Chyna I would be very scared. When I'm through with you Stephen Hawking is going to look like an Olympic athlete compared to you, and that's the bottom line, so decrees The King!"

On that same episode, Triple H is put in a 2-1 handicap match between Palumbo and Kanyon, where if he loses he will not get a rematch for the intercontinental title. TripleH makes a comeback after losing the numbers game for most of the match, but, as the ref is distracted by Brian Lawler, Jerry runs in and waffles Triple H with the ring bell, causing the loss

On the next episode of Smackdown Jerry Lawler wrestles and squashes Steven Richards, basically blaming him for his current predicament in a pre match promo. while Triple H has a competitive match where he beats Chuck Palumbo. On the next Raw, Triple H challenges The Kat and Brian Christopher to a mixed tag match between himself and Stephanie. The McMahon's win with dueling Pedigrees but Jerry jumps Triple H from behind hitting him with a Piledriver. This causes Triple H to go into a match with Kanyon injured on the next Raw and lose, causing another loss to Sean O'Haire. Meanwhile, Triple H costs Brian Christopher a match with Steve Blackman. This leads to a tag team match on the next Smackdown with Triple H and Blackman picking up the win over Brian Lawler and Jerry when Blackman chokes out Brian and Jerry runs away. A series of parking lot brawls between the two take place on the go home shows, with Jerry assaulting Triple H's leg with a pipe on the go home Smackdown.

Intercontinental Title Scene
As Triple H was unable to have a rematch for the intercontinental title, on the Smackdown after Judgement Day, a 20 man battle Royal to decide the #1 Contender to the IC Title. The last three are Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, and Sean O'Haire, a dark horse of the match up, O'Haire surprisingly eliminates Guerrero and is eliminated by Jericho. The next Raw, DDP approaches Jericho backstage and says he's always been a bit bummed that they barely wrestled in WCW, but that can be changed in a non title match tonight. Jericho reluctantly accepts. They have a pretty back and forth match until the finish, when Palumbo and Kanyon jump Jericho when he has DDP in the walls of Jericho. The two ram Jericho's shoulder into the ring post several times as Jericho sells a shoulder injury. Jericho is kept off TV until the go home Smackdown. Meanwhile, Kanyon starts impersonating Jericho as DDP accompanys him, which allows Kanyon and Eddie Guerrero to have a mini rivalry, a series of matches where Guerrero is continually beat up by the Jersey Triad win or lose, but won't rest until the people the screwed over Jericho are put in their place. On the go home Smackdown, Jericho makes his return, dispatching of Palumbo and DDP while locking the Walls on Kanyon while DDP looks on and horror and Eddie eggs on the crowd to cheer with a huge grin on his face.

Light Heavyweight Title scene

In the intercontinental battle Royal, X-Pac eliminates Jerry Lynn. This, in edition to his win over him at Judgement Day, cements X-Pac as the number one contender to the Light Heavyweight Title. They each have singles matches against other Light Heavyweight competitors from WCW and WWF, with the other watching on from the commentary desk. Another interested observer is WCW Crusierweight Champion Shane Helms, who would come out in the post match to his elaborate boxer style entrance and showing off his Crusierweight Belt
