BRM Reviews the 10/2/2018 Smackdown

Post by Big Red Machine » Oct 4th, '18, 16:18

OPENING SEGMENT- bad
Paige comes out and rails against Samoa Joe, claiming that last week he “committed the most dastardly crime in WWE history.” Really, Paige? I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and consider only instances where the crime actually occurred on WWE TV (which excludes Kane blackmailing Lita for sex), but even so, are you really going to say that what Joe did last week was worse than SETTING JIM ROSS ON FIRE? Or TRYING TO MURDER BRAUN STROWMAN? We’ve seen people try to kill and maim each other even outside the confines of a wrestling match on a relatively often basis, all things considered. What is a little home invasion next to that? That’s assuming it really was home invasion because we never actually saw Joe go inside (which Paige even admitted). Even if we limit this to just home invasion we’ve worse from Orton, Triple H, and Austin (never mind Randy Orton burning down Bray Wyatt’s house). This is more like what the Ministry of Darkness did to Vince than like what Orton and Hunter did to each other.
Charges have been pressed against Joe for “trespassing” and for this, WWE management wanted to fire Joe but AJ insisted that he be allowed to fight Joe instead (and that the charges be dropped). Paige then made the big announcement that the match is still on. And that’s it. So this big angle didn’t even result in the feud being escalated via some major stipulation being added.
We then cut Paige showing us an emotional promo that AJ recorded insisting that he has to stay at home this week. There was a lot of pathos here, but I have to admit that I find it a little off that “little Annie” keeps getting mentioned and her emotions keep getting described, but AJ’s other three kids don’t even get names. AJ cut a promo telling Joe that in Australia “I’m talking about burying you alive,” which was an odd phrase to use, considering that this is not a Buried Alive Match.

MIXED TAG TEAM MATCH: Andrade “Cien” Almas & Zelina Vega vs. Fabulous Truth (R-Truth & Carmella)- 5.75/10
Better than I thought it would be.

TYE DILLINGER & PAIGE BACKSTAGE- Dillinger wants revenge on Randy Orton, and yet Paige- the babyface general manager who just told us how she didn’t fire Samoa Joe because JA Styles wanted to get revenge on him- kept trying to talk Dillinger out of it. Dillinger insisted, so Paige booked the match for tonight.

NEW DAY DO GOOFY PANCAKE SH*T IN THE RING- bad
I laughed at the ICOPRO joke. They proceeded to be goofballs for a while until Sheamus & Cesaro came out to save me, but Corey Graves’ reaction to Byron disappointed complaining about this interruption because “I wanted Mr. Bootyworth to penetrate my ears” made it all worth it.
Sheamus & Cesaro overturned New Day’s table full of pancake ingredients so New Day attacked them. We then got a brawl where the babyfaces were winning because they had a numbers advantage. Sheamus then threw a bowl of flour that was inexplicably left on the floor (well… the real reason was so it wouldn’t still when the table was overturned) into Kofi’s eyes, and with the fight now fair, the heels triumphed. The heels then took forever to humiliate New Day’s cook/butler by dumping pancake batter on him.

They’re advertising an Evolution reunion for Smackdown 1000. You know… because Evolution was such a big part of Smackdown.

RANDY ORTON vs. TYE DILLINGER- no rating, decent segment
They started fighting before the referee wanted them to so they brawled all over while the referee kept trying to get them to stop fighting and get into the ring so that he could tell them they were allowed to fight again. Randy won the brawl with a draping DDT onto the floor, then twisted Dillinger’s finger in the turnbuckle… and unlike when Marty Scurll has done this in the past, WWE actually made it matter and seem to be making a big angle out of it instead of it just being a random spot in a random match.

SHELTON BENJAMIN & THE MIZ BACKSTAGE- fine
Miz comes upon Shelton working out and gives him a pep talk for his match against Daniel Bryan and encouraged Shelton to “maim” Bryan to “make a statement.” Shelton finally cut a good promo expressing his anger at constantly being overlooked. Then Miz told us all he would be on commentary for that match, because G-d forbid we go an entire week without that happening.

WHAT HAPPENED IN MILWAULKEE- good
Rusev demanded that Aiden English come out and “show everyone this bogus evidence.” Aiden English gave a long, annoying speech to build this up, though I did pop for Lana actually calling him out on stalling. He did actually have some evidence, though, which he dubbed “One Night in Milwaukee.”
We got a shirtless Aiden recording himself on his phone, trying out disses for Milwaukee. Lana knocked on the door and showed up. She talked- without her accent- and told Aiden “I want you.” Aiden says “I want to show you the rest… but I can’t” because TMZ is supposedly going to pay him for this supposed sex tape and “I wouldn’t want to cheat on them.” Rusev got angry and chased Aiden backstage, while Lana stood alone in the ring with an unreadable expression on her face (due to bad acting, not her being purposely stoic).
The best part about all of this is that literally right before this segment in which Aiden English teased releasing a sex tape of himself and another WWE employee who is a third employee’s wife, we got a commercial for the next episode of Total Divas, in which Lana & Rusev engage in a softcore pornography shoot and put it on the internet and are then lectured by some executive that “guys, we work in a PG company. This is unacceptable.”

RUSEV & LANA BACKSTAGE- fine
Rusev is still looking for Aiden English. Lana tells him that there is more to that video than Aiden showed. Rusev said “we’re not going to deal with this here” and resumed his search for Aiden.

SHELTON BENJAMIN vs. DANIEL BRYAN- 6.75/10
As previously advertised, The Miz was on commentary for this match. Shelton worked over Bryan’s midsection. They scared the hell out of everyone on a spot where Bryan went for a diving headbutt and Shelton rolled out of the way… but not out of the way enough and Bryan wound up giving him a shoot diving headbutt. Shelton won via distraction by Miz (you knew it was either going to be that or Miz running in for the DQ), then Miz worked over Bryan’s injured ribs some more before laying him out with the Skull-Crushing Finale. The post-match angle was good, but I was really hoping for a good solid eighteen minutes of Shelton vs. Dragon.

PEYTON ROYCE (w/Billie Kay) vs. ASUKA (w/Naomi)- 4/10
The IIconic Duo were goofy and also claimed they would in at Super Show-Down. These two had a match. Asuka on. That’s rally all there is to say.

BECKY LYNCH’S BIG SURPRISE- fine segment
She shows a video package of her continuously kicking Charlotte’s ass, then complained about not being put on any magazine covers while Charlotte is. She kind of has a point. The fans treated Becky like a total babyface. Her big surprise is that she has designed a new poster for Super Show-Down of her standing over Charlotte’s fallen body. Charlotte came out and they started to brawl. Charlotte got the best of it, including throwing Becky into the poster, putting her in the Figure Eight, and generally just kicking her ass. This wasn’t a bad segment in a vacuum, but on the go-home show I’d prefer to have the heel escape.

I want to call this a bad episode of Smackdown and it definitely wasn’t good, but at the same time it hit the go-home notes relatively well, was easy to sit through, and managed to progress some stories that are not being featured on Super Show-Down, either.

Self-defense. Austin was the one doing the home-invading.

Burying people alive has at least been part of a match stipulation. If you want to blame someone for that, you have to blame the company. What the wrestlers in those cases did was theoretically legal because the match is theoretically sanctioned by some officially recognized governing body (i.e. the state athletic commission).

But yes. Paige was being idiotically over-dramatic. What Joe did was bad, but to say it is among the worst things we've seen in WWE is completely ridiculous.

That Stephanie McMahon iron Undertaker logo thing was pretty bad lol.

It's just another typical case of "The ____ thing/women/ppv/etc...in history."

This is obnoxious...get all of this "trespassing and charges filed...trying to figure out how to manage this week..." Shit off of this WRESTLING show.

Lol this is why this thing isn't going anywhere. It's just literally "guy goes too involving other guy's family" over and over again, Then "AWH I'M GONNA KILL YOU YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!"

And they're just relying on the wrestling to carry the rest.

i'm ok with the corny stories, what bothers me is that there is a disconnect between the intensity in the story they're trying to tell vs the story they tell in the ring. Home invasion angles should result in a blood feud level match, not a no countout, no dq match.

Make. Saxton. Backstage. Interviewer.

Just have him be an extra since there's already Charlie Caruso and Kayla Braxton. Half of what he does is *very disgusted and extremely posses off serious face, while shaking the head.*

Just like after that "big Milwaukee reveal" ...he's just sitting there with that look still lol.
