BRM Reviews the 8/1/2017 Smackdown

WWE UNITED STATES TITLES MATCH: AJ Styles(c) vs. Kevin Owens- 8/10
More awesomeness from these two. That struggle for the ropes in the Calf Crusher was crazy! The ref bump looked weak, but the finish works as a way to build heat between Owens and Shane, which I assume is where they’re going eventually.

BRYAN, SHANE, THE REFEREE, & OWENS BACKSTAGE- PERFECT!
What we’re getting is Owens vs. AJ at SummerSlam with Shane as the referee. I would have assumed Owens vs. Shane would happen at SummerSlam but I guess they want to save it for the September show, which won’t draw buys on name value alone, and thus could benefit from Shane being on the card (it also gives you a match special enough to book in the main event so you can avoid putting Jinder in another bad main event even if he is still the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

USOS PROMO- good

FASHION POLICE CRAP- skipped it.

AIDEN ENGLISH vs. SAMI ZAYN- DUD!
Aiden English’s singing is such an obnoxious waste of time. This took ENTIRE MINUTES. The entire match went less than two. At least when Sandman did a long entrance the people actually cared about him (and plus we got to listen to Enter Sandman the whole time).
JBL tried to claim that Aiden English’s singing gets in his opponents’ heads and gives him an advantage. That would have been the most ridiculous thing said on commentary all match except that Tom Phillips claimed that English “picked up and important win on the Battleground Kick-Off Show against Tye Dillinger.” Being on the Kick-Off Show and involving Tye Dillinger are both things that even on their own would disqualify a match from being important.
They did absolutely nothing for almost two minutes, then Aiden English rolled Sami up clean. Then Mike and Maria came out to cut a bad promo. Yet another feud that feels like it will never end.

NATALYA & CARMELLA vs. BECKY LYNCH & NAOMI- 4.5/10
Nattie is the #1 contender and Carmella has MITB, but neither one of them got their entrance shown. Maybe we could have seen their entrances instead of English’s singing? That would have given them some time to show off Carmella’s “Free Ellsworth” shirt.
Stuff happened. Naomi reversed the Code of Silence into her own still-unnamed submission and made Carmella tap.

RENEE YOUNG INTERVIEWS JINDER MAHAL- bad
Whichever Singh Brother it was that too the bump off the cage at the PPV is wearing a neck-brace, while the other one has some sort of arm injury. Jinder’s promo was not good. He has no charisma whatsoever.

CHAD GABLE vs. RUSEV- 6/10
Lots of fun for such a short match. Gable is just plain trying be Kurt Angle in the ring at this point, but it works for him.

RUSEV PROMO- he says no one can beat him, but it was a Rusev promo, so it wasn’t borin- HOLY SH*T HERE COMES RANDY ORTON! They exchanged words, then Orton ducked a clothesline and dropped Rusev with an RKO.

WWE TITLE #1 CONTENDERSHIP MATCH: John Cena vs. Shinsuke Nakamura- 7.5/10
GREAT match. That back suplex was scary as hell, though. I want to be happy about Nakamura’s win here, but the problem is that I know that it is almost certain all this means is that Nakamura will job to f*cking Jinder Mahal at SummerSlam.

A pretty great episode of Smackdown. The two main storylines carried things, though. It’d be nice to see the women’s division or male undercard actually start to deliver on this show. Still, this was actually two good weeks in a row. I can't remember the last time Smackdown did that.

STUPID ANNOUNCER QUOTES:
Byron Saxton talked about Naomi having “an open door policy” when it comes to defending the title, saying that anyone who has challenged her “she has invited with open arms.”
You know… except for the last woman she feuded with, who asked her for a title shot and she responded by laughing at her and telling her to f*ck off because she didn’t deserve one.

They've got to fix the announce teams.

SD is the worst. Saxton just , isn't...and JBL is just flat out , played out, over done by now, and not to mention how strenuous it is to listen to the both of them for their own reasons.

They've been constantly bickering passionately about this finish to Owens and Styles and the show's literally just started...
When they come, they'll come at what you love.

Just put Graves, Ranallo, and McGuiness on all three shows and ppvs already. Out with old and let these three dudes that actually deserve it and give a full crap have their time.
