NWK Reviews the 2/17/1997 Raw (unwatchable)

Post by NWK2000 » May 5th, '19, 23:16

Bret Hart vs Sycho Sid for the WWF Championship....doesn't happen because Steve Austin interrupts:: GREAT. First of all, this is how the show opens. No intro, nothing, which is awesome. Austin and Bret go after each other, but during the separation, Sid gets some shots in on Austin, which in turn causes Steve to chop block Austin's leg. This is a great subversion of expectations, and, like in real sports, we don't get an immediate solution to the problem.

Shawn Micheals "Lost my Smile" promo: There's been lots of jokes about Vince having a crush on HBK, but the fact we're seeing this AGAIN proves it.

"IYH Final Four" stills: Meh. Focuses on Vader, and also the Austin/Bret series of events.

Sycho Sid promo: Excellent Sid cuts a shouty 80s promo about how the title match will happen no matter what.

Marc Mero w/ Sable vs Savio Vega (w/The Nation of Domination)
a serviceable match that ended up with a goofy interference in which everyone just ends in the ring and the ref throws the match out. Also JC Ice has to take a flip bump for a Sable kick, poor bastard.

5.5/10

Post match: Meh. Ahmed Johnson runs in to help the faces

Bret Hart interview great same baby face promo with whiney undertones
They replay the Thursday Raw Thursday match Rocky head ugh

WWF Intercontinental Championship Rocky Maivia (c) vs Leif Cassidy

Perpetual loser Leif Cassidy gets an intercontinental title shot because reasons. The highlight of this match is a hunter Helmsley promo that was meh as best . Rocky wins clean because the only person he can manage that against is a jobber. Hooray!
1.5/10
Jerry Lawler finds an ECW sign and rants about it: Meh. it sets up next week's Raw

In-ring promo with Goldust and Marlena: Marlena cuts an awesome promo while Goldust is trying to sound serious in character which just doesn't work . Triple h shows of and splashes water on Goldust for the heat which is dumb. Chyna shows up and Marlena does a much better job selling than she did the night before.

Headbangers vs. Hardy Boys

It's basically a Ring of Honor squash where the jobbers don't do anything interesting enough to justify that kind of match they made The Headbangers look good though Farooq also challenged Ahmad to a Chicago Street fight for Wrestlemania in an in-set promo
3/10

Bret, Sid, and Austin segment : They tease Bret vs Sid again but as Bret is exiting his lockeroom Austin attacks. Backstage goons are immediately there to break it up, including Vince, as you would if there was a backstage brawl in a real sport.

President Gorilla Monsoon says we'll get the match tonight This is pretty good. Gorilla is authoritative and well spoken. you can see why Gorilla was picked as the authority figure.

Flash Funk (w/ The Funkettes) vs. Owen Hart {w/Clarence Mason}

The crowd is absolutely dead 4 flashes entrance Owen has both belts. Owen lands right on his head from a drop kick. The guys have a fun lucha match but ifs drowned out by Paul Heyman and Jerry going off on each other on the phone . Bulldog runs out and sends Mason to the back . We come back from the commercial, and Austin gets an in-set to land all of his usual promo beats . Owen kicks out of Flash's finish and Bulldog cheats to help Owen win but Owen isn't happy with it. What is this storyline?
6.5/10

WrestleMania commercial: meh

Hunter Hearst Helmsley vs Bart Gunn

The bell rings and Jim Ross interviews Hunter about Chyna and Hunter denies it. Honky Tonk Man is on commentary and wants to bang Chyna. They have a generic wrestling match and Goldust interferes and chases Hunter threw the crowd to give Bart the count out win. This was more of a segment than anything else, but it was disguised as a match so....

No rating

James Andrews interview . Shawn twisted his knee and doesn't need surgery. Yay?

WWF Championship
Bret "Hitman" Hart (c) vs Sycho Sid

So was the planned main event Bart vs Hunter?

The to go toe-to-toe until sid get some momentum then Bret works leg Bret debuts the Ring Post Figure Four . It's weird to see a guy working quasi heel and having JR freaking out Austin runs right into a punch by Sid when he tries to interfere Sid does a sunset flip . Bret gets bopped in the head by a chair from Austin, outside the ring , Powerbomb and pin. Sid wins
7.5/10

Undertaker comes out and stares down Sid AWESOME way to cap off the show

Conclusion

Beyond the main event scene, everything else in the ring was pushed to the side for promos, in-set promos, and hyping next weeks do-nothing "ECW vs The People Smart Enough to Pass on the Germany flight" show. As a result, the show was completely unwatchable

Are you going to be continuing with these 97 Raws? A hindsight perspective on the ECW stuff and the Germany Raw (the internet seems to like it a lot, and it appears to have had a lot more wrestling than usual) would be interesting.

I watched it last night, and the internet is absolutely right. Owen vs Bulldog is one of the best matches on Raw ever, Rocky has his best match thusfar against Vader. and Sid vs Mankind is way better than it had any right to be.
