Cody Rhodes took to social media to clarify why he left AEW earlier this year.

Rhodes responded to a fan on Twitter, denying that he had left over disputes with The Elite or CM Punk. He said that he left due to “a personal issue” and “wanting to go for the big one,” presumably refering to the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

“I didn’t leave because of the Bucks/Kenny,” he wrote. “I’m forever bonded to those men over what we created and I remain very proud of it, and I didn’t leave because of/or have issues with Punk. We got along. Not money, not booking, just a personal issue and my wanting to go for the big one.”

In a surprise, Rhodes left AEW in February after negotiations for a new contract between himself and Tony Khan failed. He made his return to WWE in April, appearing as Seth Rollins’ mystery opponent at WrestleMania 38. He suffered a torn pectoral muscle days prior to the Hell in a Cell event in June and has been out of action since the event, undergoing surgery.
