WALTER changes name to Gunther on WWE NXT

The end of NXT saw WALTER announcing a new name for himself.

WALTER announced himself as Gunther after defeating Roderick Strong on tonight’s NXT with an air raid cash and a power bomb. After WALTER announced the name change, Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel ran in and attacked Strong. The Creed Brothers then ran in and the teams brawled to end the show.

On January 13, WWE filed a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the name Gunther Stark. That is also the name of a Nazi military commander during World War II who died after his vessel sunk in the English Channel in 1944. The last name was not mentioned on tonight’s show.

WALTER made the move to NXT from NXT UK earlier this month, returning to team with his Imperium stablemates Aichner and Barthel, losing to MSK and Riddle at NXT New Year’s Evil on January 4.

It's probably just the result of mixing and matching common German names.

It falls into the category of "Submission Sorority," where they just didn't Google first.
It's a facepalm thing. Nothing more.

But yeah. Changing WALTER's name is idiotic.

i feel it's the other way around, they googled Gunther and the name came up, but they didn't read who it was

No way they Googled first because if they knew it was a real name, they wouldn't use it because their goal here is to trademark, and they don't want someone running around with social media accounts with that name that they can't legally get taken down.

I'm 99% sure that when you register anything, they google it to make sure it doesn't belong to someone else. That at least happens with business names

They don't Google it. They just check their database to see if someone else already has it. The dead Nazi probably didn't file for an American trademark before he died.

A guy who has a chant of “WALTER” isn’t going to go away. And everyone knows how petty a WWE crowd is. The WALTER chants will continue.
Have A Nice Day!
