WWE SmackDown posts record-low ratings against State of the Union

This week's SmackDown drew the show's lowest audience total since the July 2016 brand split, averaging just 1.841 million viewers. The previous low of 1.921 million was set on election night 2016.

President Donald Trump's State of the Union address pulled in well over 30 million viewers across various platforms. It was one of the longest such speeches in history, going up against the first 90 minutes of SmackDown.

For maybe the only time in history, SmackDown failed to crack the top 20 in total cable viewers for the day, trailing news-related programming and coverage of the speech itself. SmackDown fell all the way to 10th in the 18-49 demo with a 0.64 rating. Most weeks, SmackDown finishes first or second in that demo.

These comparisons can probably be thrown out due to the unique circumstances, but SmackDown was down 14 percent from last week and down 26.5 percent year-over-year. The latter number is not that far off from recent trends, however, so it's clear this show is falling in popularity when compared to last year's numbers.

Here's a look at the last 10 weeks of SmackDown viewership and how it compares to the previous year:
