BRM Reviews MLW Genesis (Very Bad)

MLW Genesis (6/16/2002)- Philadelphia, PA

OPENING VIDEO PACKAGE- I only had one problem with this, but it was a MAJOR one: They showed a clip of the winner of the tournament holding up the belt! WTF? The entirety of this show is the tournament for the title… SO WHY WOULD YOU SPOIL IT?!

MLW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND MATCH: La Parka vs. Jerry Lynn- 6.5/10
Good opener

MLW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND MATCH: Christopher Daniels vs. Vampiro- 6.5/10
Vampiro uses a chair and a low blow right in front of the referee. Apparently there are No DQ’s. That would have been a good thing to tell your audience, seeing as this is your first show. Otherwise, a good match.

MLW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND MATCH: The Wall vs. Taiyo Kea- 6/10

STEVE CORINO PROMO- great

MLW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND MATCH: Steve Corino vs. Shane Douglas- 6.5/10

JERRY LYNN & CHRISTOPHER DANIELS BACKSTAGE- seems like a good set up for something down the line.

MLW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINAL MATCH: Shane Douglas vs. Jerry Lynn- 6/10

MLW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINAL MATCH: Vampiro vs. Taiyo Kea- 5.5/10
Wait… so the semi-final matches are allotted less time than the quarterfinals?

TOURNAMENT FINALS TO CROWN THE FIRST EVER MLW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION: Shane Douglas vs. Taiyo Kea vs. Vampiro- DUD!
TWO MINUTES! BOOOO!

POST-MATCH ANGLE- not only does it just scream “ECW REHASH!” but when he threw down the NWA Belt, Shane also put over the ECW Heavyweight Title. Here, Shane is just burying the MLW Title, which, while it doesn’t actually have any prestige, as this was MLW’s first show, still makes the belt look more like a prop for a wrestling angle than it does something important. Oh… and when Douglas threw the belt down, the stupid smarks CHEERED! WTF?!

Overall, a very bad show by MLW. This is a tournament. We know that the first round matches won’t be the best (these were actually pretty good, as far as that goes), so the main event HAS to deliver. In this one, the package fell of off the back of the truck somewhere. The angle to close the show was just a bad idea. A new company needs to forge its own identity. This just screams “ECW wanna-be.”
One thing that really got annoying were Joey Styles’ constant digs at “sports entertainment” on commentary. WWE was a long way away from being anything remotely resembling “bad” at this point in time, and for Joey to say that “sports entertainers” couldn’t pull of various basic wrestling moves is ridiculous when you look at the WWE roster at the time: Angle, Benoit, Eddie, Jericho, RVD, Brock Lesnar, Triple H, The Rock, Edge, Christian, Lance Storm, the Hardys, Booker T, Ric Flair, William Regal… need I go on? Anyway, a very bad first show for MLW.
