BRM Reviews ECW Super Summer Sizzler 1993 (not good)

ECW Super Summer Sizzler 1993 (6/19/1993)- Philadelphia, PA

ECW TV TITLE MATCH: Jimmy Snuka(c) vs. JT Smith- 3.75/10
This went about five minutes, they told a little story with Snuka working over JT’s knee, but other than that, this was eh.

FIRST BLOOD MATCH: Tony Stetson vs. Larry Winters- 5/10
I generally hate First Blood matches, but they worked this one pretty well. Good stuff. Good aftermath, too.

TIGRA vs. PEACHES- no rating. Eh segment. The point of this match was a little T & Am then to introduce this new babyface woman… then have a little more T & A by having Steston & the Rockin’ Rebel get some heat on her by ripping her top off.

ECW TV TITLE MATCH: Jimmy Snuka(c) (w/Paul E. Dangerously) vs. Tommy Cairo- 5/10
Did a good job of getting you behind Cairo, but the pace of this match was painfully slow, and Cairo didn’t take nearly enough damage to be believably pinned, even with Snuka’s feet on the ropes.

PHILADELPHIA STREET FIGHT: Rockin’ Rebel vs. The Sandman- 5.75/10
Great intensity here, and next to the rest of this show, this feels like classic.
Hearing Sandman come out to Surfin’ USA just feels so… wrong.

DICK MURDOCH vs. DARK PATRIOT II- 6/10

SAL BELLOMO, SUPER DESTROYRE #1 & STEVIE WONDERFUL vs. JOHNNY HODBODY, SIR RICHARD MICHAELS, & HUNTER Q. ROBBINS III- 6.5/10
Good match

TEXAS CHAIN MATCH MASSACRE: Terry Funk vs. Eddie Gilbert (w/Paul E. Dangerously)- 8/10
LOVED IT! Very good aftermath, too.

THE COMMENTARY- mostly horrendous. Most of the enjoyment from the commentary comes from people making fun of Jay Sulli.
Commentary for this show is being provided by Jay Sulli & Paul E. Dangerously-
We are about six minutes in, and I already hate Sulli. He mentions that Snuka sometimes wears shoes and sometimes doesn’t and wonders about this clearly very important point. Paul E. manages to save this, though by coming up with an explanation that just makes Snuka look like a master strategist. Props to Paul for that.
Three matches into the show, Paul E. is replaced by Terry Funk, who is almost as bad Sulli. During the Dick Murdoch match, Funk was just horrific on commentary. Thankfully, he leaves after that match… and salvation comes in the form of the ECW debut of Joey Styles. Hearing Joey as a heel was odd, but fun. Then Joey leaves, and Sulli is joined by Tod Gordon for the main event. Their commentary was eh. Watching this show gave me a whole new appreciation for just how great Joey was.

Overall, not a very good show from ECW. If not for the main event, this would have been horrendous, and even with it, the show still isn’t very good.
