WCW New Blood Rising (8/13/2000)- Vancouver, BC

DOUBLE LADDER MATCH: Jung Dragons vs. 3 Count (w/Tank Abbot)- 7.25/10
Great opener

THE CAT vs. THE GREAT MUTA- 4/10

JUDY BAGWELL ON A FORKLIFT MATCH: Kanyon vs. Buff Bagwell- 5.5/10
I’m confused. Normally the rules in an “Object X on an Elevated Thing Of Some Kind” match are that once you climb the pole and retrieve the object, you can use that object to hit your opponent. So in this match, the objective is to climb the pole, retrieve Judy Bagwell… and hit your opponent with her until you have done enough damage to pin him?

FOUR CORNERS MATCH FOR THE WCW WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES WITH THE FILTHY ANIMALS AS SPECIAL GUEST REFEREES: KroniK(c) The Misfits in Action (Cpl. Cajun & Gen. Rection) vs. The Perfect Event (Chuck Palumbo & Shawn Stasiak) vs. Mark Jindrak & Sean O’Haire- 4.75/10
A pretty good match with good storytelling until the ending, in which Lt. Loco (someone who wasn’t a referee) counted the pin and everyone went along with it. Oh, and to make it worse, Chavo counted a pin ON HIS OWN STABLE…AND THERE WAS NO TURN! The best part of this match was Konnan’s commentary. He was just hilarious.

STRAP MATCH: Billy Kidman vs. Shane Douglas (w/Torrie Wilson)- 5/10
Great aftermath.

JEFF JARRETT ATTACKS BOOKER T- Great!

R.O.T.C. (Rip Off The Clothes) MATCH: Major Gunns vs. Miss Hancock- -1.5/10 (negative 1.5)
Wait… if this is a Bra & Panties style match (with a mud pit next to the ring, no less)… then why are there pinfalls? Anyway, this match has no resolution because of what would become the Stacy Keibler pregnancy angle. This probably should be lower, but I feel bad giving it in the negatives because, before the they went to the mud pit, the ring-work actually wasn’t too bad.

VAMPIRO PROMO- good

STING vs. THE DEMON- DUD!
Sting’s big hyped return against a member of the stable that set him on fire… IS A SQUASH MATCH? This was crap, and the aftermath wasn’t good either.

CANADIAN RULES MATCH FOR THE WCW UNITED STATES TITLE WITH JACQUES ROUGEAU AS SPECIAL OUTSIDE CANADIAN REFEREE: Lance Storm(c) vs. Mike Awesome- no rating. AWESOME comedy match!
I’m not sure if it was intended to be one or not, but this might well be my favorite comedy match of all time. The announcers commentating and Rougeau’s body language really made this match for me.

WCW WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: KroniK(c) vs. The Great Muta & Vampiro- 2/10
An eh match hurt by a needlessly dirty finish.

KEVIN NASH vs. GOLDBERG vs. SCOTT STEINER- DUD!
We can have chairshots in front of the ref but Midajah has to knock the ref out in order for us to have some low blows… and when the ref gets back up, he has no problem with blatant interference?
Yes, that was dumb, but now we come to the major creative failing of this match. It took the concept of a worked shoot too far, and instead of a wrestling show, we got a sh*tty version of an Aaron Sorkin-esque show about a wrestling promotion (which, BTW, I think would be the coolest thing in the world).

WCW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: Booker T(c) vs. Jeff Jarrett- 7.25/10
We’ve had charishots and crotching people with the ring post right in front of the referee, but the ref need to be down for a guitar shot? And with that ridiculously weak a bump? I know refs are week, but it’s not like they have a motion sensor that makes them automatically fall down upon the slightest bit of contact with a wrestler. Other than that, a very good match.

Overall, this show was horrendous. The only reason to watch this match is the Canadian Rules match, which I loved as a comedy match… but I have no idea if it was intended to be one or not. That alone should say a lot about this show.
