BRM Reviews ROH Best in the World

ROH Best in the World (3/25/2006)- New York, NY
This show starts off with Jimmy Bauer, in voiceover, recapping the end of the last show (calling the CZW guys “barbarians” was a great touch). We are told that ROH has decided to show the rest of the footage from the last show (mostly consisting of the CZW guys torturing BJ Whitmer and destroying the ROH set. Zandig even calls Gabe out to make it more of a worked shoot.
Anyway, Jimmy Bauer announces that ROH wants its revenge, so ROH is inviting any CZW wrestler that wants to come to tonight’s show. “You will not be jumped by our entire lockerroom. The numbers will be even. We will let you issue any challenge you want, and it WILL be answered.”
Good patriotic stuff that set the stage for tonight’s show.

JIMMY RAVE (w/Prince Nana) vs. PELLE PRIMEAU- Squash
Nana then runs his mouth, and Jimmy Yang comes out to shut him up.

JIMMY RAVE (w/Prince Nana) vs. JIMMY YANG- 4.75/10

FOUR CORNER SURVIVAL MATCH: Lacey vs. Daizee Haze vs. Allison Danger vs. Mercedes Martinez- 5.75/10. Good match. Martinez was particularly impressive here in her ROH debut.

Jason Blade and Kid Mikaze make their entrance for their match, but Chris Hero and the Necro Butcher jump the barricade and storm the ring.

JASON BLADE & KID MIKAZE vs. CHRIS HERO & THE NECRO BUTCHER- Squash.

HERO CALLS SOME PEOPLE OUT- Hero then calls out Adam Pearce. Pearce and Necro brawl through the crowd, with Pearce kicking Necro’s ass. Pearce takes Necro out with a bodyslam through a table, but then gets jumped from behind by Hero, who takes him out with a low blow. Necro gets back up and keeps hitting Pearce with a piece of the table.
Hero then demands that Claudio Castagnoli (his student, tag team partner, and “best friend”) come out and help them beat Pearce down. Claudio comes out and gives them both European Uppercuts, which send them running. Claudio then gets on the mic and says “F*ck CZW!”, before getting an “ROH!” chant started.
Pearce tells Necro and Hero to come back, but they don’t. Pearce says that the reason they won’t is because they are afraid of a fair fight. This was a great segment.

ALEX SHELLEY (w/Prince Nana & Daizee Haze) vs. CHRISTOPHER DANIELS (w/Allison Danger)- 7/10.

LAST CHANCE MATCH FOR THE ROH PURE TITLE: Nigel McGuinness(c) vs. Claudio Castagnoli- 6.5/10

During intermission, we get a video sent in by Jimmy Jacobs- the “Ballad of Lacey” music video. This angle was lightning in a bottle! You needed a genius booker like Gabe, and a dedicated wrestler who understands characters and psychology like Jimmy Jacobs, as well as a perfect personality in Lacey to pull this off… and they did it perfectly. People see the Age of the Fall and assume that Jacobs is nothing more than a very good Raven rip-off, but that is not fair. To understand Jimmy, you need to understand how he got there… and the journey is an outstanding story and an emotional rollercoaster.

NIGEL MCGUINNESS PROMO- kicked off the Danielson-McGuinness Belt vs. Belt feud. The lighting during this segment was pretty bad, the promo itself was very good.
AUSTIN ARIES vs. RICKY REYES (w/Julius Smokes)- 6.25/10. Aries wins when Reyes refuses to let go of the Dragon Sleeper, even when Aries is in the ropes, causing himself to be DQed. Yes, it was a non-finish, but it kept both the Aries vs. Reyes and Rotweilers vs. Generation Next feud going, as well as the angle where no one has escaped Reyes’ Dragon Sleeper.
After the match, Smokes gets in the ring and starts talking trash to Aries while Reyes keeps the Dragon Sleeper locked in, but Jack Evans and Roderick Strong come out and make the save for Aries. The Briscoes then come out and attack Jack and Roddy leading to:

JACK EVANS & RODERICK STRONG vs. THE BRISCOE BROTHERS- 8.25/10. Really good stuff.

We get a GREAT video promo from Cabana about his feud with Homicide. It really shows how this feud has changed Cabana.

9. BRYAN DANIELSON & SAMOA JOE vs. NAOMICHI MARUFUJI & KENTA- 8.5/10! Awesome match. The really interesting thing in this match was that Dragon and Joe worked as the heels and let KENTA and Marufuji be the faces.
After the match, there was a great segment between Joe and KENTA which set up for the “Joe calls out Pro Wrestling NOAH” angle.

We got a short video afterwards with Lance Storm hinting that he would come out of retirement to challenge Dragon for the ROH World Title

We then got a good backstage segment with Shelley and Rave arguing.

Overall, this was a great show. A very strong double main event and some great promos and segments make up for a moderately weak undercard.
