BRM Reviews ROH Vendetta

Post by Big Red Machine » Feb 22nd, '11, 13:40

ROH Vendetta (11/5/2005)- Chicago, IL

CHAD COLLYER & NIGEL MCGUINNESS vs. ACE STEEL & DELIRIOUS- 4.5/10
Told a good story (Ace trying to get his hands on Collyer, who had busted him open with a chair at the last Chicago show, and Collyer doing everything he could to avoid Ace), but I absolutely hated the finish

HOMICIDE PROMO- pretty good.

SAL RINAURO vs. JIMMY JACOBS (w/Lacey) – 5.25/10. Good and fun. Jimmy’s interaction with the crowd made this match.

JIM CORNETTE, BILL WATTS, & ADAM PEARCE SEGMENT- Made sense, but wasn’t particularly exciting or enjoyable.

CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI vs. BJ WHITMER (w/Lacey)- 4.5/10. Really disappointing from these two.

SAMOA JOE vs. CHRISTOPHER DANIELS (w/Allison Danger)- 8/10

HOMICIDE-CABANA BRAWL- Great segment. A brutal exchange of chiarshots during intermission ends when Julius Smokes gets involved, making it 2-on-1. Cide and Smokes then duct tape Cabana to the ropes, and beat him down. Then Cide brings out a fork, and starts ripping Cabana’s forehead open. Then Cide pulls out a pair of scissors and tries to cut Cabana’s tongue out (in retaliation for Cabana making fun of him via a rap on a previous show). This was actually physically hard to watch… but it was intended to be, and it definitely worked. It showed that Cide had gone crazy, and I definitely felt relieved when Ace Steel came out to make the save.

ADAM PEARCE vs. DAVEY ANDREWS- 3.5/10

ROH WORLD TITLE MATCH: Bryan Danielson(c) vs. Roderick Strong- 10/10! This match can be summed up in one word: “Intensity.” If you have ever wondered what it would look like if two guys who are, at their cores, very technical, submission-based and hard-striking wrestlers got pissed off during a match against each other, this is it. Everything just seemed extra-vicious. Every armbar seemed like they weren’t just going for the victory, but actually wanted to rip the other guy’s arm off! The finish was the perfect way to cap off this match… the debut of Dragons “Elbow Strikes” finisher.

DANIELS (& Danger)- LACEY’S ANGELS (really just BJ) SEGMENT- Daniels starts cutting a promo on Joe, but Lacey’s Angels interrupt him. Lacey says “just another typical stupid male”… and not one of the three men around her says anything. Lacey’s sexism was such an atrocious failure as an angle, and seeing it makes me even more glad that we got Jimmy Loves Lacey so Lacey’s mic skills and character (and Jimmy’s, too, of course) were given an angle in which they could shine.
My guess is that the lack of response was intended as them all ignoring her, but it just came off as dumb and unnecessary… Speaking of dumb and unnecessary, that is exactly how I would classify the presences of both Lacey and Jimmy Jacobs in this segment. Aside from her aforementioned terrible line, Lacey said and did nothing here. Jacobs actually had no lines at all! The Daniels-Whitmer stuff came of as overly clichéd-ominous, but it would eventually build to something good.

EIGHT MAN TAG TEAM WAR in which the winner will get the man advantage in their Steel Cage Warfare match next month: The Embassy (Alex Shelley, Jimmy Rave, Abyss, & Prince Nana) vs. Generation Next (Austin Aries, Jack Evans, Matt Sydal) & AJ Styles (w/Daizee Haze & Jade Chung)- 6.75/10.
Pretty disappointing. As regular match, I would have given this, 7/10, but when you bill something as a “war,” people expect a war. All we got here was one table spot. There weren’t even any TEASES of weapon shots.
The finish was well done, though, with Sydal and Aries about to beat the crap out of Nana, so Nana grabbed Daizee to use as a human shield. Daizee managed to escape, and Aries & Sydal had Nana cornered… then Haze turned on them with low blows. Jade Chung charged at Daizee, but Nana pulled her off and fed her to Daizee for a Mind Trip. Then Rave and Shelley hit some finishers and we get the pin. Good turn, with the Embassy getting back all of the heat that they lost the previous week when Jade Chung turned babyface.

COLT CABANA PROMO- BRILLIANT!

Overall, this show was okay. It does have a 10/10 match on it, as well as a great match between Daniels and Joe, but everything else on this show was, at best disappointing.

YES! By a lot. This match is 10/10! The two don't even compare.
